We pick back up with Jake and Haven after she hears what she wants to hear and decides that Jake isn’t who she thought she was. Is that vague enough for you? Basically, there’s a massive miscommunication and even though Haven acknowledges that fact, she’s unwilling to reopen her heart to the possibility of having it shatter into a million pieces.

I oscillated back and forth between wanting to shake Haven and now wanting to slap Jake. PEOPLE, GET IT TOGETHER. DON’T YOU KNOW YOU’RE MEANT TO BE?! Louise Bay creates lots of drama in this second installment that will have you dying to get these two in the same room together so that they can work their shit out.

We get a little deeper look into Jake’s mind this time around. As his feeling for Haven become clearer, so does his need to fight harder to win her back. Haven’s smart and witty mouth reappears towards the end of this installment and I welcomed its reappearance. There’s a big cliffy at the end of this one that you can pretty much guess if you have an ounce of common sense, but I don’t care. I want more!

Overall, this book is fun, passionate and a great read. A solid 4.5 star rating from this gal.

Review:

Ahhhhh, these books are the only time that jumping into a fire sound inviting. Although the heat you feel from this novella isn’t from the Phoenix fire. Dante and Brenna have been separated for thirteen years and they have a lot of catching up to do. As you’d expect, the chemistry between them hasn’t been forgotten and the sparks fly between them.

I love love love these short novellas from Julie. She quickly transports you to another world, and then hits you over the head with an adorable sweet love story. There isn’t long, drawn out he-said-she-said shit that drags out for ages. You want them together? You fucking get them together. You want the next piece of the story? IT’S RIGHT THERE, TURN THE PAGE. I loved it!

Caress of Darkness is a great addition to this series. It’s filled with love, drama, and that J. Kenner heat that you’ve come to expect. Great read!

tl;dr recommendation: hot, rough, dangerous and intense. This is a good read!

Book Summary:

Longer Review:

I don’t know what I was expecting going in, but holy shit, this was a fun ride! Keirney tells a dirty, dangerous and rough story of two agents who find themselves in a crazy situation and an even crazier one as they begin to develop feelings for each other.

Deep undercover, Armando Torres has worked his way up in the drug cartel known as Los Zetas. Beth shows up a little too earlier for a meeting and Torres is forced to claim her as ‘his’ in order to save her from rape or worse. But now she’s been marked as a potential target. Can Torres keep her safe?

Beth is super uptight and frankly, a little crazy. But it’s a good crazy. She likes order, lists, peanut butter and M&Ms, and I can totally relate. I really liked her. Her lists and color coordinating help calm the crazy that goes on inside her mind that is otherwise filled with guilt and confusion over, god….the girl has some serious guilt issues.

She’s pretty sure she’s faking her way through life (CAN’T WE ALL RELATE TO THAT?!), and even though she has a prestigious job, she’s really not happy. Getting close to Torres totally throws her off her game, especially because she does NOT trust. ever. anyone. But she can’t stop her attraction to this big, scary looking man who is otherwise considerate, sweet and fucking awesome with his tongue. #yesplease.

Torres isn’t sure what he’s doing with Beth. He doesn’t know why he’s so drawn to her at first, but he knows that he can’t stay away now that he’s had a taste. He says he’ll do anything for her, but will he give up his need for revenge against the man that killed his best friend for her too?

As the two get closer, the sparks fly and control is lost. Turns out, Beth likes it a little rough. YES. GET IT GIRL. I really loved these two together and that cliffhanger gave me major sadface. This is pretty different than what I usually read, and I loved every minute. I NEED MORE! MUST GET BOOK 2!!!!

I can remember three times I should have died. Three times, I stood on that precipice and was snatched back from it. Three times, before Berg took me as his ward and gave me Citizenship.
Never, not in all my years Outside living in the Manor, not in the many times I should have died, and not in the decade I’ve lived as a Citizen, have I ever been this frightened.
The wind slips around me and I hear the uneven crush of footsteps. Without turning, I track his movements around our meager camp.
“Kaida.” He approaches, and I reach up, taking the coffee he’s carrying. “We have to pack up.”
Cedric stops without touching me. Close enough that I can feel the heat of his body and his tension, but too far away to feel.
For a heartbeat, I almost ask him to hold me.
“He’s running out of time.”
I swallow hard, and stand. “Did you look at the maptable?”
He gives me an impatient look and I clench my jaw to keep from snapping at him. Take a deep breath and swallow the rest of my coffee. It’s thick and grainy on my tongue, and I make a face. “Show me.”
He pulls the maptable out and steps close again.
“Berg said they follow the same paths. If he’s right, we should hit their campgrounds in the next day or so.” Cedric says. His long fingers trace the path on the maptable. I glance around again—the graylight is taking hold, pushing the ever present darkness back. I stand, brushing my pants off. “Let’s get going, then.”
He nods, slipping the maptable into the water proof bag. I pack up our clothing from the night before as Cedric starts collapsing our tiny tent.
“How much more food do we have?” I ask.
“Two days. And what he gave us to trade.” Cedric’s gray eyes flick to mine. “We should just use the pills today. Save the food.”
I nod, even though hunger is gnawing at my belly already. The pills don’t take away hunger pains.
Cedric stumbles a little as he swings the pack onto his shoulder, and I’m at his side instantly, shoving my shoulder under his. His weight is familiar, the heat of his body against mine almost scorching.
“I’m fine, Kai,” he snaps, pulling away.
“Why are you doing that?”
It’s the question that’s been circling my head for three days. Since we were tossed out of Berg’s hover, and Guin wasn’t. Three days. Fifty seven until…I shake my head violently, and stare at Cedric. “He wouldn’t want you to treat me like this. He’ll be furious.”
“When we have him back, he’s allowed to be,” Cedric says, so softly I almost don’t hear the words. “Come on. We’re wasting time.”
“We’re going to get him back, Cedric.”
His shoulders slump, and I fight the urge to cry. Damn them. How did they know that taking Guin was the fastest way to break Cedric? To break us both?
I stand in front of him, take his face in my hands, and force him to look at me. “We will. We’ve been beating the odds for sixteen years. We’ll get him back—we just have to give the Commission what they want.”
He takes a deep breath and nods, but I can see the doubts in his eyes. The questions. Can we really find the Hidden City? In fifty seven days, can we find what the Commission hasn’t been able to find in almost eight years of searching?
I shiver and Cedric takes my hand. My left hand hangs empty and tingles—the ghost of a touch of the boy who should be with us.
We have to find the City. Guin’s life depends on it.

Holy Jesus. if you thought Carter couldn’t be more dominant, YOU WERE WRONG. More grit, lots more sex, and a whole lot of danger make this second installment way more fulfilling than the first. Speaking of filling….Carter most certainly does that. over and over again. mmhmmm….

Carter’s back and ready to protect Layla at all costs. He thought that he could stay away to handle his business, but when Layla is placed in danger in his absence he’s determined not to be apart from her for another second.

The raging dominance in this book once again skirts the line of crazy, and Carter should probably see a therapist about his anger issues; however, he adores Layla and that’s what won me over in the end. Layla’s a little sassier in this installment and I was extremely happy when she started asserting herself. Granted, she makes a really dumb decision there at the end, but where would the fun be if she didn’t?

You learn more about Carter’s past in this one and the blurry pixels are starting to come into focus.  I’m definitely hooked on this one now – get me book three! MORE STORY PLEASE.

Grace and Jared are back at it in this dramatic, sexy & sometimes whiny second installment of the Phoenix series that will have all of the pundits talking. If Grace thought that releasing the picture of her and Jared was bad….well, the secrets she now keeps are so much worse. She and Jared may have just professed their love for each other, but Grace is still a little unclear as to where they’re headed…and she can’t get anything out of Jared. Of course, she doesn’t ask the right questions either.

GAH. I have to admit, I enjoyed this book for the most part – and I love this series – but Grace infuriated me in this one. Don’t we know that keeping secrets only leads to disappointment and an explosion that otherwise could have been avoided?! I spent a large majority of this book wanting to slap Grace for her complete idiocy. WOMAN, PLEASE.

This book was redeemed with hot and delicious sex that somehow made up for Grace’s internal tantrums and selfish decisions. Even though Jared and Grace are rarely in the same State at the same time, when they are they do not waste any time. I loved the exploration of their sexual relationship. As Grace begins to let go, she begins to start asking for things she never thought she would. Things that are a little darker…a little grittier. mmmhmmmm, YUP, that’s the good stuff right there.

The ending was my savior. I felt like a soaking wet towel that had just been wrung out. I had been put through so much in this story and I was so incredibly thankful for that ending. I would have lost my mind otherwise. This one gets a 3.75 for me – & I am so looking forward to book three – ON TO THE ELECTION, BITCHES!

Hot, sexy, mysterious Jude is like a magnet to sweet tattoo artist Cory. The desire that flares between them is a living, breathing thing that grows until it…..well, you know. If you haven’t read a male/male love story before, you should just pick this one up and dive on in. This book contains some of the hottest blow job scenes I’ve ever read. *takes notes*

Cory is an incredibly talented tattoo artist who likes to keep things light. He can’t keep his mouth shut to save his life, which lends itself to some pretty funny foot-in-mouth situations. He’s a dog lover (*swoon*) and is still recovering from a really terrible situation that happened to him a few years back. When Jude York rolls into town the rumors start flying. Like in every small town people start making up stories and assuming all kinds of crazy things. Especially when Jude hangs around the local MC.

There is an MC in this book but it is NOT an MC book. We good? Ok, moving on. While Cory’s blabbering away unnecessarily, Jude barely says a word. But he doesn’t have to. The intense buzzing between them says everything he can’t – but something’s holding Jude back.

This story is full of sweet and passionate kisses, raging hard-ons, danger and mystery. Oh, and plenty of adorable dogs. I loved as both men began to open up to each other and build what they hope can be a lasting relationship. They’re both scared – of different things – and yet, there’s a real chance that this could be love. Danger spikes & sparks fly. I loved the hell out of this book!

While he was distracted, I silently moved toward him, hoping to grab hold of that leash. But just as I approached, he took off again, following that same squirrel who’d taken a leap to the next large maple.

I was out of breath and now beyond frustrated. I shoved my hand in my hoodie, my fingers closing on a sturdy dog cookie.

When I looked up again, Chopper was headed straight for the skate park. Shit.

“Chopper, goddamn it,” I called in some last-ditch effort. “You don’t listen for shit.”

Unexpectedly, Jude York neared the cement barrier at the entrance to the bowl. His board clenched in his fist, he seemed to be assessing the situation as the large dog charged nearer.

He left his skateboard on the concrete walkway and stepped into the lawn. He squatted down in the grass, made eye contact with Chopper, and the dog changed course to sail directly toward him. What the hell was that about?

Some type of deep whistle emitted from Jude’s lips and instead of slamming into his chest, Chopper came to a sudden halt beside him. Like Jude was a damn dog whisperer or something. His strong fingers grabbed hold of his collar and he reached down to mutter something in the dog’s ear. Chopper sat down in the grass. Actually fucking sat down—I had never been able to get him to do that.

I became motionless as I watched them, even though Ace was eager to inch closer. At least one animal heeded my command. I wondered what it was about Jude that compelled Chopper to run toward him. I mean, I got the appeal, so maybe it was just pure animal instinct.

The muscles in Jude’s forearm flexed as he stroked Chopper’s head and the dog’s tongue hung out in a happy pant. The little fucker.

As I walked closer to Chopper, Jude’s eyes lifted to mine. And for the first time I saw an array of other emotions alight in them. The most blatant being amusement, as if his irises contained a flicker of light. His lips tilted at the corners in an almost imperceptible smile and he looked so dazzling right then. As he held my gaze for the first time ever, something tightened like a fist inside my chest.

Shit, he was stunning. In that exotic kind of way. His hair was a mass of short blond dreadlocks, his skin inked mainly in black, and his eyes were the most gorgeous light green I’d ever seen—almost like cellophane. And now those same eyes locked on mine and held steady.
