From the New York Times bestselling author of Stepbrother Dearest, comes a new forbidden STANDALONE romance.

What happens when the one you want is the only one you can’t have?

My name is Sevin.

Homeschooled and sheltered by my ultra-religious family, I was always taught that lust was a sin.

Elle was the girl who’d been carefully chosen for me.

After a long-distance courtship, I’d be moving into her family’s guesthouse so that we could get to know each other in the months before the wedding.

Boundaries were set: no inappropriate touching, no kissing, no sex before marriage.

I’d accepted those rules and my fate.

Until I met the one I wanted to sin with.

That was when restraint became a problem…especially since the one wasn’t Elle.

It was her sister, Evangeline.

You know what they say about best laid plans.

My name is Sevin, and I have sinned.

Told in alternating points of view, Sins of Sevin is a full-length standalone novel. Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. Only appropriate for adult readers age 18+.

Review:

*3.75 stars!*

Leave. Stay. Leave. Stay. OHMYGOD CAIN, YOU KILL ME.

Cain is a hot, sexy, and mentally fucked up former military man who is fighting for all the wrong things. He fights to numb his pain. He fights for a private military contractor to make money. But he won’t fight for Violet because he doesn’t think she could ever be his. Because she was his best friend’s fiance. OH, THE ANGST!

[Note: not sure if his name was intentionally referring back to the Cain & Able from the Bible, but I sort of loved the symbolism if it was].

Violet & Cain been best friends for years – until Violet’s fiance (and Cain’s best friend) is killed in action. Suddenly, Cain pulls away, buries himself in work and keeps himself far away from Violet – because he’s terrified he’ll throw himself at her if he sees her again. His love for Violet runs deeper and longer than anyone knows – but his guilt holds him back from letting himself explore his feelings.

Violet finds out that falling in love with your dead fiance’s best friend can cause serious problems. Especially because she isn’t even aware of the fact that she’s in love with Cain. Violet oscillates between being super insecure and overly confident, which was sort of annoying. But on the whole, she’s a nice girl who is overly forgiving and who can’t seem to move on with her life.

This one is angsty but pretty damn hot. Sidney works you up and then lets you stew. Quite a few times. I actually screamed out “BUT WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO BANG?!” at one point. Thankfully, my husband is used to such outbursts. They most definitely eventually bang. DON’T WORRY.

There are plenty of sweet moments to enjoy here, and most all of them occur when Cain let’s himself enjoy life, not focusing on the past and what can’t be changed. His inner struggle is evident and painful at times to read – and the miscommunication between them is just enough to make you whimper, but it doesn’t turn into a full out scream.

Laid Out has twists and turns that kept me guessing. It doesn’t hurt that I’m also a sucker for a man in uniform. This is a fantastic read for those who long for the angsty relationship with an undercurrent of sexual tension that’s poised to pop. ENJOY!

Excerpt:

She was kicking a rock out of the way when Cain grabbed her hand and pulled her to a nearby tree, causing her to yelp as she struggled to keep her balance. At nineteen, Cain was thin and lanky—all limbs. She was still short and stumpy. He turned her around brusquely and pressed her back against a tree, the bark digging into her. She looked up at him and saw an intensity in his eyes she’d never seen before. His cheeks were flushed and the vein by his neck pulsed. Suddenly she became nervous. He’d never looked at her this way—the way the cute guys looked at the pretty girls.

Lately she’d felt flustered when Jeremy was nearby, with his mess of curly dark brown hair and dimpled smile. Feelings that hadn’t been there before were now creeping in. In fact, she could’ve sworn Jeremy had been flirting with her lately—complimenting her clothes and hair, brushing against her “accidentally,” inviting her to the movies without Cain around. But these brief flirtatious moments were with Jeremy. Not with Cain. Never with Cain. Cain was just her friend. A little gangly, a little quiet, a lot overprotective.

That was until now.

Suddenly there was an awareness that had never been there before.

When he licked his lips, her pulse sped up. A foreign feeling—desire—began to take root. He reached toward her hair, and she flinched a little before he tucked a stray strand behind her ear. The tender action surprised her. For the first time, she noticed how clear his blue eyes were, how his hair was so blond it almost looked white. All of a sudden, he didn’t seem like just this boy who was always around. Unfamiliar feelings began to erupt throughout her body. She felt her cheeks flame and her heart race.

When he finally spoke, his voice shook a little. “I’m your friend because I want to be your friend. Not because of your parents or your dumb threats. I don’t like it when you call yourself fat. You’re not fat.”

She nodded and murmured, “Okay.” She drew her lower lip into her mouth and nibbled as her wide eyes gazed at his. Cain reached over and pulled her lip out of her mouth. “You’re nervous.” It wasn’t a question. He knew her well enough to be aware of her tells.

“I . . . uh . . . what are you doing, Cain?”

“I don’t want you to kiss just anyone to get it outta the way.”

Words failed her, so she just nodded again. There was a moment where neither spoke. He just looked at her as if trying to decide on his next move.

“I should be the first person you kiss,” he finally said as his tongue flicked out a little and wet his lips.

She gasped and looked up into his eyes nervously. His eyes never left hers, but his reddened ears and neck showed that he was also nervous. She too knew him well.

Like a fool, she bobbed her head up and down mostly because the words were stuck in her throat. It felt like he stared at her lips for an eternity until he finally leaned forward, causing her to press herself further back against the tree, her hands gripping the bark. He tilted his head to the side and she imitated the action.

Should I open my mouth? Leave it closed? What about my tongue? What should it be doing?

Softly, almost feather light, his lips brushed against hers. Her eyes instinctively closed tight, and she stopped breathing. It was less than ten seconds but it was forever. In that moment she fell into the category of girls who’d had their first kiss. She kept her eyes closed for far too long, and when she opened them he was standing upright, his face even more flushed. Her own tongue snuck out of her mouth to taste her lips. She swallowed and looked at him, her eyes as wide as saucers. What just happened?

Then, with the same intensity in his expression, he leaned back down, but this time he pressed harder against her lips causing her lips to part slightly. His body moved closer to hers, and then she felt his hands grip her waist and his tongue touch her lips before it moved into her mouth and brushed hers for a brief second, his fingers digging into her skin at her waist. She instinctively melded into him, her body seeking him out.

Again he moved away and looked at her. His expression never changed, and neither did hers. Her eyes were wide; she touched her lips, as if to determine whether the kiss had really happened. They just looked at each other, neither saying anything, her heart beating so loudly she was sure he could hear it. Finally she spoke and said the only thing that came to mind. “Wow, my cup runneth over,” she whispered. It was a phrase he teased her about constantly, but it was exactly how she felt: she could barely contain her happiness.

He chuckled, and the smile did her in: she threw her arms around his neck and kissed him. Hard. He wrapped his arms around her waist and walked them the half step back against the tree again. Their noses bumped. It was awkward, but as first kisses went . . . it was perfect.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Vi.” It was the last thing he said to her before leaving for war.

Review:

Hotly anticipated, Laurelin’s duet to Free Me more than lives up to the hype. When this appeared on my kindle I sort of majorly freaked out with excitement. And it was entirely well deserved.

At the end of Free Me, I was practically crumpled into the floor in a ball rocking slowly back and forth wondering HOW how how Laurelin could leave me in such a state for months. Needless to say, I was more than ready to dive into Find Me.

If I thought that the passion was intense before, I was mistaken. We pick back up with Gwen a year after JC goes into witness protection declaring that he will find her after the Trial of the Century is over and he’s safe once more. Gwen’s struggling to move on – and in truth, she hasn’t. She’s treading water, fucking Hudson’s brother to pass the time (yup. not a typo. also not a spoiler, you learn that in like the first two seconds, so calm down) and waiting for JC to return to her life.

And then he does.

And it’s awkward and angsty and uncomfortable and the tension buzzed through the pages so hard that my fingers were shaking.

Paige makes us work for it, but it’s absolutely worth it. There are a lot of surprises in this book, some of which made me want to throw my kindle and others that had me slapping a hand over my mouth to cover my gasp. JC’s just as smooth, in control, obstinate and utterly adorable as he was in Free Me, and his words will both set you on fire and have you swooning.

Gwen has grown by leaps and bounds from where she was, but she still struggles not to go numb when things start to go awry. Even as JC and Gwen finally solidify their love, they continue to hit roadblock after roadblock on their path to happiness. I was so nervous as the pages turned and things were getting more complicated, but then I’d be reminded: The love they have for one another is epic & timeless. This book is sweet, romantic, suspenseful and angst-ridden.

IT HAS EVERYTHING. No question, it’s going on my favorites list.

Find Me takes you to the edge and keeps you there, holding your pleasure – delaying your gratification – so when you finally get to the end, it’s so much better than you ever could have imagined. Grab a hold of your lady balls and get prepared to crash and soar on this crazy ride.

Gah! I love it I love it I love it!

Excerpt

I grabbed my cell and checked the time. It was six-twenty-nine. I threw it in my purse and turned back to the mirror to give myself a pep talk. “We will not have sex. We will not have sex. We will not have sex.”

Jesus, I was so horny already, and I hadn’t even seen him yet. I’d thought about taking care of myself before JC got there but wasn’t sure if that would make things better or worse. By the time I’d decided it would make it better, Ben was there, and now JC was ringing my buzzer.

“You look incredible,” he said when I opened the door.

I blushed as I gave him a onceover. He was dressed in khakis with a fitted shirt and a lightweight jacket. Lots of buttons, I thought. Which was a good thing, considering how damn good he looked. Had he always been that buff? “You do, too.” My thighs felt hot. Good thing I’d changed out of my pants.

I really should have pulled out my vibrator earlier.

“You brought flowers?” I’d been so taken by him I hadn’t noticed the small bouquet in his hands. Three red roses dressed with some smaller white bell-shaped flowers I couldn’t identify were wrapped in a red ribbon. I hadn’t expected it. “I didn’t know you were the kind of guy who brought girls roses.”

He shrugged with one shoulder. “I’m trying to impress you. I have a feeling this date is a test of some kind, and I want to make sure I pass.”

“Not a test,” I said dismissively. Though, wasn’t that what this was? A test to see if we got along as well outside the bedroom as we did inside? “But thank you. You do impress.”

I shifted my weight to one hip and flitted my glance between JC, still standing on the other side of the threshold, and the flowers in my hand. “I should put these in water.” But I wasn’t sure I was ready to invite him in. Because in meant we’d be closer to my bed. And my couch. And my kitchen counter. All of which were locations that could be tempting.

Really, I just shouldn’t be anywhere alone with him.

Either JC felt the same way I did or he could read my mind. “You can do that later. The plastic containers on the stems should last until we get back. And we should get going.”

“Perfect.” I set them on the console table behind me, relieved and nervous all at once. I took a deep breath, grabbed my purse, and turned back to him. “Let’s go!”

In the hallway, he offered me his hand. I took it, then, there it was—the shock of his touch as his fingers weaved with mine. I let out an involuntary sigh, and with it bricks of tension fell from my body. Release. It shuddered through me as electricity sparked up my limb from where we were connected and spread throughout my body, and I wondered if this was what it felt like to melt. What it felt like to be frozen for so long and then, finally, to have the sun brush against cold ice, transforming it into something more fluid, something entirely different.

I glanced down to where we were joined, so overcome by how right it felt to be touching him in this simple way. When I looked back at him, I found his eyes pinned on me. His expression said he’d felt it too.

“You messed up, you know,” he said, as we started toward the elevator. “You were supposed to wear something that I didn’t want to rip off of you.”

My cheeks heated—actually, I wasn’t sure they’d ever cooled from the first blush he’d caused. “You said it would be impossible for me to wear anything that wouldn’t elicit that response. The only other choice was to go naked.”

“That would have been an excellent choice.”

“But not very practical.”

“I’ve never been a fan of practical.” He pushed the call button and the elevator doors opened immediately, the car likely still there from when he’d arrived.

We stepped inside, our hands still molded together. The doors closed, and I so badly wanted to turn and kiss him.

Instead I delivered the short speech I’d practiced since I’d woken up that afternoon. “I think I should tell you, I don’t have sex on first dates.”

“Wow. That’s…surprising. Considering we had sex before we’d ever even been on a date.” He squeezed my hand. “But, after you left me with blue balls this morning, I already figured out you’d turned into a prude.”

I laughed. “I’m not a prude. I’m cautious. And that’s nothing new. That’s always been me.”

“Yes, it has.” The short phrase was full of subtext, and I knew he was remembering how uptight I’d been when we’d first met. Icy. Frigid bitch.

“I’m better than I was,” I assured him.

He nodded. “I know. Otherwise you wouldn’t have given me even this much of you. And if you want to wait, then I can too.”

What I wanted was to push him against the wall and devour him.

But that was an in-the-moment want, and long-term, I wanted a relationship that was real and lasting. “Thank you. It means a lot.”

He leaned in close and, though we were alone, whispered in my ear. “I’m not going to say that I’m not dying to have you under me, Gwen. Because I am. But I’m dying to just be with you more.”

Despite the descent of the elevator, his words sent me floating. “You’re really good at that impressing thing.”

He gave me my favorite grin. “Who knew?”

Sequel to Breaking Free. Book II of II.

What happens once you’ve broken free?

Sophie Pierce has shed every part of her old life. She has said goodbye to her father, the friends she once partied with, and even the man she may have lost her heart to. Now, it’s time for her to spread her wings and become the person she wants to be, and she’s more than ready to work for it. But much like the paparazzi Sophie has come to despise, the past will sneak up on her—much sooner than she could’ve imagined. It’s only a matter of months before she learns that her final night in Vancouver was never the end at all. It was the beginning.

When Tennyson Wright lets Sophie go, he knows something has to change. He’s lost sight of who he is, and the wakeup call isn’t pretty. Deciding to take a page from Sophie’s book, he begins a journey of self-discovery, though everything comes to a screeching halt when he learns through the tabloids that the girl he can’t stop thinking about is pregnant.

Their romantic relationship may have ended, but soon their co-parenting responsibilities bring them together to play the Hollywood game by their own rules.

Excerpt:

Noah hummed, pausing at some action movie that had recently started. “Throwing up, gaining weight, moody…”

“I haven’t been moody.” Sophie got defensive.

He chuckled. “Uh-huh. That’s what my sister said before she found out she was pregnant.”

That was funny. “How did I not know you have a sister?”

It was Noah’s turn to shrug a little, which made him drop a spring roll on the floor. “Where’s Cujo? Shit.” He licked some sauce from his T-shirt. “Shit, shit, sorry about that.”

Men.

“Pick it up,” Sophie laughed. “Max isn’t eating that crap. Now, about your sister?”

“Oh, right.” He picked up the roll and shoved it into his mouth. “She lives in Berlin, so we don’t see each other often. We text and Skype and stuff. She’s got two cute kids, but I hate when they visit our parents in Pittsburgh. Makes my folks wonder when I’m gonna settle down.”

“Poor you,” Sophie mocked. “So you don’t want kids of your own?”

“Fuck no, I’d ruin them.” Noah went back to flipping channels. “Unless they pop out as hockey fans. Then we’re good.”

She snorted a giggle and ate some more.

“Seriously, though.” He pointed his fork at her. “You sure you’re not pregnant?”

“Oh my God, yes.” Sophie rolled her eyes. “I think I’d know if I was growing a person. Besides, I haven’t had sex since July—whatever date the wrap party was.”

It was mid-November now.

“The twenty-fifth,” he murmured, pensive. “So…that would make Tennyson the dad.”

She ignored the pregnancy crap and stared intently at her food. She’d never said anything out loud to Noah about her and Tennyson, though most people had their suspicions.

“I’m not pregnant, Noah.”

*

“You’re pregnant, Ms. Pierce.”

Sophie sat in her doctor’s office and stared, waiting for the punch line.

The doctor went on with a nod. “That’s what’s been causing your body to change so quickly. You are pregnant.”

Sophie waited some more, and then she let out a nervous laugh. “Be serious, please. What’s wrong with me?”

“There is absolutely nothing wrong with you,” he told her patiently. “You are simply pregnant. Now, since I know you have a demanding schedule, I took the liberty and made you an appointment with a colleague for an ultrasound—right after we’re done here.”

She pursed her lips. Her brain was completely blank aside from the word “pregnant” going on a loop.

There was no way.

She was only twenty-one. She hadn’t had sex in…almost four months. Four fucking months.

“I imagine this is coming as a surprise for you.” The doctor went through a stack of papers that sat on his desk. “I have the records here from your doctor in Vancouver, and you’ve said your period’s been irregular?” With every word the doctor spoke, more color drained from Sophie’s face. “Due to your previous condition with undernourishment, that can obviously affect your ability to get pregnant, but it’s far from impossible—”

“I’m on the pill!” she blurted out.

All of a sudden, her breaths came out fast and shallow.

Holy shit, this couldn’t be happening.

She and Tennyson had been protected, goddammit. They’d used condoms until they’d spoken about safety. They’d both been clean, and she was on the pill.

“Did you ever miss taking one?” the doctor asked gently. “Remember, birth control is never one hundred percent.”

“Oh my God,” Sophie whimpered.

*

Coming out of the bathroom after his shower, Tennyson fastened his watch and tapped it pointedly for Asher to get off the damn phone. Tennyson would’ve been more patient if it weren’t for the fact that this was his vacation and he was hungry as fuck.

Asher nodded and held up a finger. “Okay, that’s great,” he told whomever he was on the phone with. “No, I was only surprised because she’s worked so hard. But it’s good that she’s not canceling.” There was a pause, and Tennyson wondered if they were discussing Sophie. “Rescheduling is fine, and have the interviewer fly out if she wants to stay in LA for whatever reason.”

By the time he wrapped up the call, Tennyson had dressed in a pair of jeans and a hoodie, and he sat down on the edge of his bed to find his eye drops in his toiletry bag.

“What’s up?” he asked.

Asher’s brow furrowed and he scrolled down on his phone. “Sophie. I need to call her tomorrow. Remember I thought she was canceling a bunch of appointments?” Tennyson frowned and nodded, and Ash went on. “She’s not—but she’s rescheduling, and I don’t know why.”

Tennyson didn’t know what to say, other than he was worried. Ever since she’d put her diva antics and princess behavior behind her, she’d been nothing but accommodating. She always pushed herself to be her absolute best.

“You ready to go eat?” Ash asked.

“Yeah.” Tennyson ducked into the bathroom real quick to insert some drops into his eyes, and then he grabbed his wallet before they left.

On the way to the restaurant, he made a mental note to call Sophie when he got back to the hotel. If something was wrong, he wanted to be there for her.

The desert town was lit up for Christmas, but it didn’t really feel like the holiday had arrived.

“Hold on.” Asher grabbed Tennyson’s shoulder as they were passing a bodega. “What the fuck is this?” He walked over to a newsstand and snatched up a magazine.

Upon seeing it was a tabloid, Tennyson rolled his eyes. “Since when do you read gossip?”

Asher turned and slapped the magazine to Tennyson’s chest. “Since I learned your ex is pregnant.”

What?

Tennyson held up the magazine and saw the headline.

“The Party Princess is Pregnant!”

Having lived and breathed the industry for years, Tennyson was ready to brush it off as bullshit, but then he saw the grainy photos. Three of them on the cover, one with a circle around Sophie’s belly. Then a centerfold that was all about her. Several photos of Sophie, Max, Brooklyn, and Maliah on the beach.

Sophie was wearing what looked like cotton shorts and a bulky sweatshirt, but at some point, she had unzipped it. And it was clear as day. Her snug top underneath the hoodie hugged a small, yet very distinct baby bump.

Photo after photo. Sophie and Maliah were tossing a tennis ball for Max to chase, and the wind blew the shirt aside. So many angles of proof. She was pregnant.

About the Author:

There aren’t many things better than picking up my Kindle and getting completely sucked into a whole new world—where words morph into images and characters’ moods suddenly reflect my own. Aside from good plot and writing, for me, it boils down to relatable characters.

As a writer, I’m not finished until the men and women in my books come to life, until I can see them as real people, until I can connect with them. Which means I write what I want to read: everyday heroes and heroines who have the same struggles we all do. They evolve, have flaws, make mistakes and amends, learn, and find the endings they fight for.

Those are the characters who take the readers on a journey away from work, laundry, grocery shopping, and to-do lists.

When I’m not writing, researching, or brainstorming, I’m either planning my next trip (never-ending bucket list!), reading, watching hockey, or spending time with family and friends.

About Anything More Than Now:
Reagan Landry is months away from college graduation, but instead of excitement, she’s frozen by the fear of letting go — of her ex-boyfriend, of the comfortable life she created for herself in Portland, of the years-long search for her older sister who abandoned her as a homeless teen. When she’s finally forced to decide what’s next, Reagan is met with another complication — her ex’s best friend, Noah Burke, who seems determined that she embraces what could be instead of what has been.

Drunkenly hooking up with his best friend’s ex, Reagan, is a mistake, but being secretly in love with her is so much worse when things seem one-sided. A disenchanted frat boy about to fail out of college, Noah has been living out someone else’s dream after a horrible accident five years earlier. Just when he thinks he’s lost any chance he has with Reagan, she surprises him by agreeing to spend the summer together at his family’s ranch in Montana.

And suddenly what started out as a complication between them becomes serious…until the past starts ripping apart their future.

Exclusive Excerpt:
Dusk settles over us, and inky light veils Reagan’s tanned body. She smiles back at me over her shoulder, her hand clutched tightly in mine as she leads us through the cool grass of the field. I study the line of her back from her cropped top and those denim shorts of hers. She’s curves and soft sweeping lines, no angles tonight. I’m convinced her barefoot on a summer night might be the sexiest thing yet.

“Are you sure you want to go back?” she asks. Maybe she asks twice because she stops and tugs me closer. “Noah?”

I brush the back of my hand against my forehead, my skin sticky from working on the house all day. My body feels stretched and alive after the work, like a good runner’s high except this is bone deep. I want to kiss her so badly. Instead I take her hand and twirl her in a slow circle so her hair fans out and brushes over her sun-kissed shoulders.
If I could keep her, if we could have more than this moment, I think everything in life would work out finally. Realistically, I know we can’t have anything more than now. And I plan to make the most of it.

Reagan shimmies her hips, her hands up in the air as she lets go and dances. Fireflies flicker around her, the moon is finally up in the sky, and the Montana night has fully settled in. Between crickets and my heart beat, it’s just her softly humming to herself as she dances for me.

I reach out and hook my fingers inside the waist of her shorts and drag her against me. She gazes up dreamily, still humming, her eyes wide and sleepy.

“I love you,” I whisper. The words fall out and as soon I as hear them leave my mouth, I stiffen.

Her hand skirts up my bare chest and curls around the back of my neck. “What a perfectly dumb thing to say about a girl like me.”

I smile because she’s not backing away. Judging by her smile, she’s teasing, so I take my chances and press on. “I think it’s a perfectly true thing to say to you.”

“Tell me, Noah, how does a girl like me respond to that? From a boy like you?” She pushes up to the balls of her feet and kisses my chin, scratching her nails along the back of my neck, and I’m so instantly turned on. Completely. Her lips spread into a smile over my jaw as she feels me hard against her middle.

“I want today to last forever,” she says, her breath warm over my skin. She slides her body closer, her hands growing greedy. “Tell me we have a thousand more days like today.”

I could lie. Holy hell, do I want to lie, but my lips meet hers instead and I kiss her until the truth is there, until we both know we can’t because her life is going one way and mine another, if at all. We have tonight and another week and maybe emails or texts later. We don’t have anything permanent and maybe that’s why I told her what I did. Maybe that’s why she doesn’t run away.

Heart-Shaped Hack
EXCERPT
“Oh, hi,” she said.
“Imagine running into you here.”
“This is quite a coincidence.”
“It’s not a coincidence at all. I knew you were following me.”
“You did not.”
“I spotted you hiding behind the plant when I walked into the bank. Plus I could smell your perfume as soon as I stepped out here.”
“Did you”—she used her fingers to make little air quotes—“appropriate money from this bank?” she whispered.
“Of course not. I do all my work from the Batcave. Believe it or not, I actually bank here. I was just signing some papers.”
Kate had never seen a man look so utterly scrumptious while wearing glasses. There was something about the combination of his hair, his scruff, and the semi-rimless designer frames that made him irresistible. “Are the glasses a disguise? Because I totally knew it was you.”
“The glasses are real. I often suffer from eyestrain since I spend so much time on the computer, and I was up late last night, working.”
“They make you look very smart.” She took a moment to imagine how his scruff would feel rubbing against her skin if he were to kiss her.
“I am smart, but I think you mean devastatingly handsome. More so than normal, that is.”
“You’re so humble.”
“Ready?” He walked to the door and held it open for her.
“Yes.”
“Follow me.” He looked at her and laughed. “That shouldn’t be a problem for you.”
They took the elevator to the basement, and when the doors opened to the parking garage, Kate followed Ian to a row of cars. He stopped beside one and pulled a set of keys from his pocket.
She gasped.
Ian smiled. “It’s a—”
“1964 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe.”
“’65. But color me impressed.”
“My brother Chad was obsessed with this car. He used to have a poster of it on his bedroom wall. There were only six built between 1964 and 1965.”
“A bit rare indeed.”
The last authentic Shelby had sold at auction for around seven million. Ian’s was obviously a replica, of which there were quite a few, but it was still a very notable vehicle with a price tag that started in the low six figures. “Helena called it an old blue car.”
He grinned, looking contemplative. “Technically, that is correct.”
Kate could not resist running her hand lightly over the Guardsman Blue paint and the white racing stripes on the hood. The Shelby was unmistakably race-car-like in appearance with its aerodynamic design and unique body style. Chad was going to be so jealous. “For someone who values his privacy, isn’t this a bit ostentatious?”
“How so?”
“Rakishly handsome playboy who makes grand philanthropic gestures and drives a flashy car. Any of this ringing a bell?”
“Rakishly handsome playboy?”
“Well, if the Prada loafer fits. Wouldn’t you fly under the radar more easily in, say, a Ford Focus?” she asked.
“A Ford Focus? You want me to tool around town in a Ford Focus? Jesus, would I still have my balls?”
“No, they cut them off when they hand you the keys. Of course you’d still have your balls. What kind of question is that? This conversation has gotten way off track.”
“You mean because we started out talking about my car and now we’re talking about my balls?”
“Are we?”
“I believe so.”
“Maybe we should go back to talking about your car.”
“You want to drive it, don’t you?”
“Why would I want to drive your car?”
“Why wouldn’t you want to drive my car? Can you handle a stick shift?”
“Yes, and rather competently I might add.”
“That’s an enormous turn-on. Truly.”
She pretended not to hear him. “This is not a good car for Minnesota winters.”
“Horrible, I agree. My other car has four-wheel drive, but it’s not nearly as fun to operate as this one.” Ian dangled the keys in front of her.
He was right. Kate was dying to drive his car and couldn’t wait to see how it handled. She took the keys, opened the door, and reached over to unlock the passenger side for Ian. They belted up, and she started the car.
“Please note that I’m already making good on my promise, Katie. Because I assure you, driving this car will be the opposite of boring.”

Release Day & Review: Sustained by Emma Chase

Author: Emma Chase

Book: Sustained

tl;dr recommendation: Sustained is laugh out loud funny and warmed my heart. I have no complaints to file about this legal romance!

Book Summary:

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

Longer Review:

Emma tells us in her acknowledgments that she felt this story come together perfectly, that she loves it immensely and that she knew it was awesome when it was finished. You won’t hear me objecting – she’s totally fucking right.

SUSTAINED just works. Chelsea is pretty much the the best human being on the planet. She’s taken over the responsibility of raising her late brother & his wife’s SIX children after they pass away in a tragic accident. Each of those kids has a personality, and we learn allllll about them. I LOVED IT.

Jake actually enters the picture because of one of those kids and his propensity for acting out. Jake doesn’t do kids. He doesn’t do complicated. Jake just does women – lots of them. Until he finds out that there may be consequences for his desire to spread his love throughout DC.

When Jake starts helping Chelsea with the kids – way more than anyone ever asks him to – he’s like a fish out of water. It’s completely comical, hysterical and adorable. Jake’s inability to stay away may have something to do with Chelsea, whose eyes seem to pierce right through every wall he’s built. My heart clenched at the sweet moments and my pussy clenched at the sexy ones. There’s an incredible build up between Jake & Chelsea that explodes in some serious passion that will have you gasping for breath.

While the legal stuff isn’t all totally accurate (sorry. I know. plot. tell me to shut up) I could easily look past any flaws. The story is exceptional: romantic, sexy, hilarious & emotional. Sustained is laugh out loud funny and warmed my heart. I have no complaints to file about this legal romance! 4.5 stars!

 Blurb:

She’s playing hard to get…to win the MMA fighter of her ultimate fantasies in a sultry new novel from New York Times bestselling author Lori Foster

Vanity Baker loves a good, clean match, but she’s not above playing a little dirty. She’s wanted Stack “The Wolf” Hannigan from day one. Seems as though the best way to corral the famously commitment-phobic fighter is to insist on keeping it casual. And her plan works—deliciously well—until Stack’s past steps out of the shadows.

Stack learned early to stay free of attachments. But with sexy, forthright Vanity, he’s the one always left wanting more. Then his troublemaking family comes back into the picture, threatening everything Stack cares about—Vanity included. Suddenly he realizes they’re much more than friends with benefits. He’s ready to go to the mat for her…but will it be in time to protect the woman who’s tamed him for good?

Review:

Containing hilarious cock-blocking, interrupted best laid plans, shady characters and a few overreactions, Tough Love has you rolling with the punches. I loved watching the feelings between Stack and Vanity grow while trying to unravel the potential danger that lurked around the corner. Don’t worry, lots of sex is also had. 😉

Vanity throws it all on the line to get at least one night with Stack – she’s been in love with him since pretty much the second that she saw him, but she’s willing to play the game and hook him slowly…especially since he’s made it pretty clear in the past that he’s only good for one night.

So Vanity makes The Plan: proposition Stack – check; engage in verbal foreplay for weeks – check; be so goddamn awesome he’ll never want to leave – CHECK. When Stack’s family drama ratchets out of control, Vanity takes the lead. She’s calming, soothing, a bit quirky, but is mostly just awesome.

From the beginning it’s clear that Vanity isn’t like other women. She’s cool under pressure, she’s logical to a fault, and she’s incredibly giving and kind. She bulldozes her way into Stack’s life, leaving Stack shaking his head in wonder. The build of their relationship was sweet and pretty damn sexy.

Stack is a strong man, holding family (both biological and chosen) in the highest regard. When he’s in full on alpha mode, he’s adorable. He doesn’t know why he feels these things for Vanity all of a sudden – he just knows that he does. It’s pretty damn cute watching a big man go all mushy when he realizes he’s in love. GAH, I die every time.

Of course, he’s also sort of a possessive guy, and once he realizes that he wants much more out of Vanity than she’s claiming she’s offering (OH! The Plan is working!) he blatantly begins to mark his territory. Honestly, it was a little ridiculous that he was less than accepting that Vanity has *shhhhh* male friends, but no worries, Vanity quickly fixes that disillusionment. Because she’s awesome.

I am such a complete sucker for MMA fighter books, but you don’t get that much fighting (in the ring) or gym time in this book. Sadface. However, there is so much going on, that you won’t even remember that you’re not watching the sweat roll down their bodies while they spar in the cage. SORRY FOR THE MENTAL IMAGE (not really sorry).

As with all of Lori’s books, I absolutely enjoyed her writing style and characters. I was easily swept into the story, cheering for (or against) the characters, and smiling at the ending. An alpha male + a quirky and strong heroine had me loving this book immediately. The plot kept me on my toes and the heat kept me needing more. Great read! 4.25 stars!

Excerpt:

The breath she held came out in a gasp as he pulled her against him, locked an arm around her waist and took her mouth with hot, incredible greed.

Whoa. And here she thought she’d been on the ragged edge.

He was so much bigger than her in every way, he made her feel tiny and feminine and fragile. In all other situations her independent soul might have rebelled, but not now. Not with Stack. She trusted him one hundred percent, and wanted him even more than that.

Flattening her hands on his chest, she smoothed over the solid wall of his pecs, up to those rock-solid shoulders. Heat poured off him, and—oh God—he smelled so good. With his big hands opened on her, his mouth eating at hers, she forgot… everything.

The music and the conversation of other guests faded away. She tunneled her fingers into his hair and tried to get closer still.

Someone bumped into them; Stack didn’t stop kissing her. If anything, his tongue became bolder, exploring, tasting.

Laughter, probably from his friends, sounded nearby, and still he didn’t stop. He gathered her closer.

Jarred back to the here and now, Vanity pressed against him. A true gentleman, Stack immediately eased up.

Her lips tingled. Shoot, her whole body tingled. She drew in a shaky breath. “Wow.”

Proving he hadn’t, in fact, forgotten they stood in the middle of the floor at a friend’s wedding, he whispered against her lips, “Let me get you someplace private.” A softer kiss of persuasion. “I’ll give you reason to be wowed.”

Such a tempting promise.

Oh, how she wanted to haul him to the nearest quiet closet. But that would be dumb. What she wanted, what she hoped he ultimately wanted, would require hours, not a few frenzied minutes.

Voice filled with regret, Vanity explained, “I can’t go just yet.”

His rough growl proved his impatience.

“Very soon, I promise.” Adjusting their embrace, her arms around his neck, his hands at her waist, she put some space between them. “Let’s dance while you cool down and I—”

“Dream on.” But he eased his hold and fell into step with her. Gaze burning over her, then lingering on her cleavage, he asked, “How much longer do I have to wait?”

Vanity didn’t pretend confusion; she knew exactly what he meant, exactly what he wanted. “One dance. Then I need to get the bouquet out of the fridge and gather up some presents and—”

He groaned again, prompting Vanity to laugh.

“Let’s talk.” Maybe casual conversation would help cool his jets and give her a needed opportunity to regroup.

“Okay.” He leaned in. “I can’t wait to taste you—all over.”

All over?

“And to get you under me. Or over me. Your preference.”

“Stack.” Her shaky voice sounded weak. “Let’s talk about something that isn’t provoking.”

“Like what? Because honest to god, darlin’, after weeks of your verbal foreplay, I’m feeling pretty damned provoked.”

The smile came slowly. Teasing Stack was a true pleasure.
