Author: Tess Diamond

Book: Game of Lies (O’Connor & Kincaid #2)

Other books in series:

Dangerous Games (O’Connor & Kincaid #1)
End Game (O’Connor & Kincaid #3)

tl;dr recommendation: This is romance laced in kevlar. 4 stars!

Book Summary:

Time is running out for Special Agent Maggie Kincaid…

A Senator daughter has been kidnapped, and the FBI’s best hostage negotiator Agent Kincaid knows something isn’t right. What started as a routine case has spiraled into political conspiracy – with a young girl’s life on the line.

Teaming up with ex-forces security expert Jake O’Connor, Maggie must fight the victim’s family and her own FBI bosses to rescue the innocent girl trapped in the middle of this dangerous game – before it’s too late. But when clues from the case trigger memories of her own kidnapping, she discovers that her past demons might be the most deadly enemy of all.

Longer Review:

This is romance laced in kevlar. This well written suspenseful serial left me super happy that I had the third book on hand.

In Game of Lies the danger gets heightened, and the unsub FINALLY becomes known. I actually totally didn’t predict who it was, so I give major points to the author for that.

This is the second in a serial romantic suspense series so you’re going to get more of the story, but not all of it – and that may make you a little bit crazy. Not to give too much way, but the girl is still kidnapped and Maggie and Jake have essentially joined forces in an effort to figure out who the kidnapper is and how they can stop him.

I loved the strength that Maggie shows in this installment and I adored the explosion of chemistry between her and Jake. There’s a little scene that I wished lasted WAY LONGER than it did – but I get it…I do…girl is kidnapped blah blah blah.

You’ll be happy to know that book three is available for your immediate needs. Because you’ll have them. 4 stars!

About Killer Instinct:
Killer Instinct 1.99 (1)
She’s not evil, but she has certain… urges.

Lane is a typical teenager. Loving family. Good grades. Afterschool job at the local animal hospital. Martial arts enthusiast. But her secret obsession is studying serial killers. She understands them, knows what makes them tick.

Why?

Because she might be one herself.

Lane channels her dark impulses by hunting criminals—delivering justice when the law fails. The vigilantism stops shy of murder. But with each visceral rush the line of self-control blurs.

And then a young preschool teacher goes missing. Only to return… in parts.

When Lane excitedly gets involved in the hunt for “the Decapitator,” the vicious serial murderer that has come to her hometown, she gets dangerously caught up in a web of lies about her birth dad and her own dark past. And once the Decapitator contacts Lane directly, Lane knows she is no longer invisible or safe. Now she needs to use her unique talents to find the true killer’s identity before she—or someone she loves—becomes the next victim…

KI New Look

Exclusive Excerpt:

I study serial killers. They’re loners. Obsessive compulsives. People who lack emotion and fantasize violence. Intelligent people who on the outside seem normal.

Interesting thing is, I am those profiles. I have urges. I plot ways to violently make people pay for what they’ve done to others.

Nature versus nurture. Of course I’ve studied that. I’ve got good parents with decent genetics so for me I’ve always suspected it’s something else. Except . . . I have no clue what.

I don’t know why I am the way I am, why I think the way I think, why I do the things I do. All I know is that I’m different. Always have been. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know something was off in me.

At ten, when other kids were coloring with crayons, I started tracking serial killers and keeping details of their murders in a journal—a journal no one has ever seen but me.

Now, seven years later, most teens hang out with friends. I, however, prefer spending my spare time at the court house—with Judge Penn to be exact. He tries all the hard cases.

His staff expects to see me, believing my lie about wanting to go into law, and so I give my customary nod as I enter the back of Penn’s court and quietly take my usual spot in the left rear corner. I sit down and get out my summer reading just in case today’s log is boring.

It’s not.

A balding, short, pudgy, accountant type man sits beside a slick lawyer he’s obviously spent a lot of money on. The Weasel is what I decide to name him.

In the viewing gallery sit a handful of women, three are crying and two stoically stare straight ahead.

On the stand is another one of the expressionless ones and she’s speaking, “. . . classical music, a candle. He knew his way around, like he’d been in my house before. He handcuffed my ankles and wrists to the bed posts and stuffed gauze in my mouth so my screams couldn’t be heard. He cut my clothes away and left me naked. He wore a condom and was clean shaven, everywhere. He had a full face mask on.”

No evidence.

“He raped me,” she matter-of-factly reports and then describes in detail all the vicious ways he violated her.

“I’m going to be sick,” the woman in front of me whispers before getting up and leaving the room.

I continue listening to the details, mentally cataloging them. Details don’t bother me. They don’t make me sick. They don’t make me want to leave a room. If anything they draw me in because they are just that—details, facts.

A few of the women in the room sniffle and I glance to The Weasel. Although he’s doing a good job of keeping his emotions blank, I catch a slight smirk on his lips that kicks my pulse.

This is one of the things I consider a talent of mine. While some people show every emotion, I show none. And I can read others’ body language, others’ faces when they think they’re doing a stellar job of masking. The Weasel obviously thinks he’s getting away with something.

Thirty minutes later The Weasel is found not guilty due to lack of evidence. As he walks from the court room, his slight smirk becomes more visible when he glances at one of the sniffling women.

This is another thing people make the mistake of—confidence, cockiness, ego.

The Weasel will rape again. Of this I’m sure.

If it is my destiny to be a killer, I’m going to need a type. And today decides that my type will be criminals—specifically, those that have managed to avoid punishment.

I turn seventeen next week. The Weasel will be my birthday present to myself. I think I’ve just found my first victim.

Review: Headed for Trouble by Shiloh Walker

25101395

Author: Shiloh Walker

Book: Headed for Trouble

tl;dr recommendation: Wonderfully smart and seriously entertaining I was so fucking sad when it ended. I could read Shiloh’s writing for days. 5 stars!

Book Summary:

SHE’S A SMALL-TOWN GIRL WITH BIG DREAMS.

Nine years ago, Neve McKay fled her small Southern town and disapproving family to seek a career in the big city. Now she’s finally coming home – and hoping for a fresh start. But the relationship that shattered her world still haunts her. And even among her nearest and dearest, she doesn’t feel safe.

CAN THIS BAD BOY BE THE ANSWER TO HER PRAYERS?

Ian Campbell is a pure Scottish muscle – as hard and handsome as they come. But when Neve walks into his bar, his heart melts . . . and he vows to have this gorgeous and somewhat vulnerable woman in his life – for better or for worse. What is Neve’s tragic secret? And how can Neve expect Ian to protect her, when doing so could put his own life at risk? The only thing Ian knows for sure is that he will do whatever it takes to keep her out of harm’s way – and in his loving arms.

Longer Review:

I was sold on this book the second I read that Ian was Scottish. Call it what you will but I have a soft spot (and a wet spot) for hot scots in kilts. Upon discovering that he has a beard I promptly orgasmed.

And then something even better happened – I loved the story. While beards and dirty accented words can leave me walking funny, the plot needs to hold me up. This one more than carried me.

Neve’s harrowed past is presented in a suspenseful and intriguing way – the writing allows you to piece together the bits and pieces until the whole horrid tale comes to light and I love that page turning style. William, her ex, his coming for her and Neve’s decided to stop running and finally comes home after ten long years away. The questions swirl around her when she steps foot back into her small town and the rumors start to spread almost immediately. Meeting Ian was a fluke – but a hot as fuck fluke that I wanted her to re-do over and over again. Don’t worry, this book is full of fluking.

Neve’s strong will and stiff backbone made me love her at once. It only took once glance from Ian for him to feel the same way. These two fit together so perfectly and I had to stop myself from physically swooning more than once. They’re struggling to gain their footing in this newfound and unexpected relationship – but Ian is utterly fantastic at giving Neve was she needs (and what she begs for).

Shiloh develops each character with ease and draws you into the quick paced story. While we know that Neve’s on the run – and we also know from what – you don’t know how it all is going to shake out. Being kept on the edge keeps the relationship drama low and the suspense high.

Wonderfully smart and seriously entertaining I was so fucking sad when it ended. I could read Shiloh’s writing for days.

Suspense, heat, quick love and serious seduction: what’s not to love?!?! Get in this book!

Why Am I Pairing It?

In Some Sort of Crazy there’s a scene in which Miles ties up Natalie in the closet and then does crazy awesome things to her. It’s damn hot and definitely worth recreating. The day after I read the book  I was in my local sex toy shop looking for a toy to review for an entirely different book and I saw a closet restraint system. I whisper yelled…ok, I yelled…across the store to my husband “Would you be okay with tying me up in the closet?!” – he obviously responded in the affirmative and thus DREAMS WERE MADE REAL. You would think that sex toy shop workers wouldn’t think this was odd, but I still got side eye while we were checking out. Whatever.

This book, like my experience with the closet restraint system, is hilarious and semi-serious and just plain fucking fun. The scene in the book involved liquor, but I wanted to save my carpet and I didn’t feel like putting down a tarp (I was imagining getting trapped in there and then authorities having to show up with me tied up in the closet naked with a tarp thrown on the floor and just figured it was better not to test fate). Therefore, uhhh, no liquor. BUT PLENTY OF AWESOME.

Review:

I’ve asked to be tied up before and we’ve done that, but not in a closet and not with anything store bought. I’ve never actually had a real restraint system and I wondered if they were worth it. I mean, why would I buy something to cuff my hands together when we have perfectly good ties that we can ruin? This system had the bonus that it could be used over a door (the instructions state “Place clear bar over the top of the door…Close the door and lock up your lover.”) and I couldn’t think of an alternate way of doing that without getting obnoxiously crafty, so I justified the expense.

The cuffs themselves are actually super comfortable. They close with velcro, which makes them adjustable. No need to worry about cuffs digging into your wrists (unless you want them to). They have little links on them that clip to the over the closet restraint part as well as another clip that links them together – so you can use them as cuffs by themselves or as part of the over the closet restraint system.

20151219_191407

20151219_191252

Once I was properly naked and tied to my closet door, my husband had a fairly fun time torturing me (in a good way, duh). There’s enough slack so you don’t feel like you’re too confined, but not enough that I could totally freely move (which is the point). The over the closet straps are completely adjustable so you can make them longer or shorter. There’s no putting together of anything – it’s completely ready to go right out of the box.

Bonus: my boobs look AWESOME when I have my hands tied over my head. There was also enough slack that he could turn me so that my face was now looking at the door, so we were able to try out multiple positions.

While I did get pretty fucking fantastic head while tied to a closet door, I didn’t have actual sex. Why? Because either I’m not flexible enough or I need to grow like 2 more inches or a I need a step stool in order to make everything line up properly. There was seriously no position that we could get in – barring him lifting me up and wrapping my legs around his waist (which we can’t do because he has a bad back) – that would allow for actual sex while I was tied up. That’s not the restraint system’s problem though, that’s just our problem.

It was no big thing – we were able to unclip and move to our bed in seconds and the cuffs were able to be used as, well, cuffs. So, while I didn’t truly recreate the Some Sort of Crazy scene, I still felt that my experience represented the book well since Natalie’s perfectly planned life is thrown off kilter the second Miles walks into it and my perfectly planned recreation was equally thrown off track. But don’t worry – like Natalie, I PRESSED ON.

The verdict: the cuffs were comfortable, fun, and seriously sexy. I was all sort of tied up and I totally loved it. If you’re looking for cute and comfy cuffs with an option to be tied to a door, this inexpensive system is a definite must.

Review: Dangerous Games by Tess Diamond

26881276

Author: Tess Diamond

Book: Dangerous Games (O’Connor & Kincaid #1)

Other books in series:

Game of Lies (O’Connor & Kincaid #2)
End Game (O’Connor & Kincaid #3)

tl;dr recommendation: a fantastic short read for the mystery lover. 4 stars!

Book Summary:

A thirteen year-old girl has been taken – and Special Agent Maggie Kincaid is the only one who can get her back.

When a Senator’s daughter goes missing, every minute counts. The FBI’s best hostage negotiator, Agent Kincaid, knows what it’s like to be a terrified victim. Kidnapped as a child, those memories haunt her every day – and give her an insight into the evil mind behind this deadly crime.

But the Senator’s family has other plans, and have brought in ex-forces security expert Jake O’Connor to oversee negotiations. He’s got secrets of his own, and doesn’t play by the same rule book. With time running out, Maggie and O’Connor will have to overcome their differences to keep this case from ending in tragedy.

Longer Review:

This book is full of smart suspense that had me captivated. Maggie has balls. Her take no prisoners attitude works both in her position as former FBI Agent as well as in life. Of course, she’s still working through attempting to overcome a horrible tragedy – thus why she’s not working with the FBI at the moment.

I actually really liked the premise of the story. It’s written in third person, so if that bugs the fuck out of you: be forewarned. But that didn’t bother me. I felt Maggie’s fire, her passion, and her need to get back to doing what she was meant to do with her life.

When she meets Jake all bets were off. I should have cared more that a girl was being held hostage – and I swear I did – but the small arcs of attraction between Maggie and Jake had me eager for more.

The plotline was believable and enjoyable – this is definitely a fantastic short read for the mystery lover.  Book one had me hooked. It’s a serial, so there’s a cliffy – but you’ll make it. PROMISE.

Blurb

When Sophie Jameson first became a domme at Club 1740, it was more out of financial necessity than it was for personal pleasure and sexual exploration. But over the years as she rocked her leather corsets and boots while wielding every crop and flogger imaginable, she grew to love the thrill and adulation that her clients brought her. But all along, her path in life and her heart was with a different profession—one she was planning to embark on at the summer’s end.

And then he changed everything. Tall, dark, impossibly built—William was the complete opposite of whatever image a male sub conjured up. After all the subs, Sophie finally felt true lust and desire. Although he was the proud stallion who needed breaking, he became the one to make her break all her rules and let down all her walls.

But it was just supposed to be for that one night, but an accidental encounter days later outside Club 1740’s protected walls had the two seeing each other in a different light—as simply Sophie and William, not Domme and sub. While they should have parted ways, they couldn’t. While they should never have gone back to her place, they did.

And that simple mistake has a serious price for both of them.

Subordination Excerpt

In the distance, a figure crested the hill on his way down from the mountain. Something about the man appeared familiar. Over the years of running at the park, I was used to seeing fellow running acquaintances. But as the incredibly built man grew nearer, my stomach lurched. Oh no, this wasn’t possible. I couldn’t literally be running into someone I’d been in a scene with the night before. In the five years I’d worked at 1740, I had never, ever run into a client.

We were within a few feet of each other when he gave a complimentary nod of hello. Then he literally skidded to a stop, sending bits of gravel flying around us. Just as I started to pass him, acknowledgement of who I truly was flashed on his face.

FUUUUUCK I screamed in my head. With everything I had in me, I raced ahead.

“Mistress Juliette?” he called.

Those two little words from his mouth send me tripping over a limb. As I sprawled onto the ground, my knees bumped along the uneven terrain. Once I came to a stop, pain raged all through my body, although it was excruciatingly centralized in my right ankle.

I rolled into a sitting position and brought my hand to my tennis shoe. “Fuck,” I muttered. It was to address both the pain and the fact that a shadow had crossed over me. A bulky shadow belonging to the only sub I had ever let myself go with.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry, Mistress.”

My gaze spun wildly around the clearing. “Stop calling me that!” I hissed.

“I’m sorry. Are you all right?”

Damn, that voice of his. Momentarily forgetting my ankle, I could feel myself growing wet just from the deep timbre, not to mention how sexy his concern was.

“No, actually, I’m not.” I jerked my gaze from my foot up to his handsome face. “My ankle is throbbing like a mother fucker, not to mention I’m mortified as hell I just busted my ass right in front of you.”

The corners of his lips fluttered, and I could tell he was fighting the urge not to laugh at me. Without a word, he knelt down beside me. “Let me take a look.”

I jerked my foot away from his overeager hands, which caused me to wince from the pain. “I think you’ve done enough already.”

Cocking his dark brows at me, he said, “My mistress’s health and well-being is always my upmost concern.”

I fought the urge to smack him and not so he could get off on it. “Here’s a newsflash for you. We are not in 1740 anymore, Toto, so this whole sub taking care of his mistress bullshit isn’t going to fly.”

“I’m not in to dog play,” he countered, with a wink.

“Yeah, well, last time I checked, you’re not sporting my collar, so I’m not your mistress.”

“Ouch, you really bring out the claws when you’re hurting, don’t you?” When I opened my mouth to lay into him again, he brought a finger over my lips. “Quit your bitching, and let me check out your ankle, okay?”

“Are you a doctor or paramedic in real life?”

He smiled, causing those delicious dimples of his to pop out. “No, not quite.”

“Then how do I know you’re actually qualified to look at my ankle and not just wanting to cop a feel of my foot?”

With a chuckle, he replied, “Don’t have a foot fetish either.”

As he slid my tennis shoe off, I hissed. “Answer the question.”

“Easy now,” he murmured.

“What qualifies you to look at my ankle?” I demanded.

“I used to be a football coach.”

“Professional?”

He laughed. “No, high school.”

“Oh,” I murmured.

“Yeah, you bandage at least one sprained ankle every game.” He glanced up at me. “Yours doesn’t feel sprained, but it’s definitely swollen. I have a first aid kit in my truck. I can bandage it for you.”

I eyed him suspiciously. As a submissive, I knew he truly subscribed to the code of conduct that his mistress always came first. But we weren’t in the club, and although club management did background checks that rivaled the FBI, he was still a stranger to me. Well, a stranger who I’d seen naked and bent over a spanking horse.

Knowing that I didn’t really have a choice, I huffed out a frustrated breath. “Okay, fine. I’ll let you take care of my ankle.”

“Try not to sound so excited about it, okay?” William said with a teasing expression.
