Author: L.B. Simmons

Book: The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller

tl;dr recommendation:  Wow. Uplifting and heartbreaking, this is a phenomenal contemporary romance that you must read.

Book Summary:

Death.

For some, it’s simply one of life’s certainties, nothing more. For others, it’s merely a fleeting thought, one often overshadowed by the reckless delusion that they have been blessed with the gift of immortality.

For Aubrey Miller, death is the definition of her very existence. Overcome with the guilt resulting from the loss of her beloved family, she alters her appearance from the once beautiful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed little girl to that of one shrouded in complete darkness, enveloping herself in her own unbreakable fortress of solitude as a form of protection for others.

As she enters her first year of college, her goal is simple: Earn a degree with the least amount of social interaction as possible. What she never anticipates is the formation of very unlikely relationships with two people who will change her life in ways she never believed possible: Quinn Matthews, the boisterous former pageant queen, and Kaeleb McMadden, a childhood friend from her past who never really let her go.

Over the years, as their connections intertwine and grow, a seemingly indestructible bond is formed between the three…

But when death painfully reemerges, Aubrey is lost once again, burying herself deeper than ever before inside the familiar fortification of her fears.

Will the refuge of friendship, the solidarity of life-long bonds, and the power of unconditional love be enough to do the impossible?

Will they be enough to finally bring about…

The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller?

Longer Review:

Aubrey Miller – or Raven as she likes to be called – has dealt with death one too many times for her taste. So much so that she believes that she’s basically the harbinger of death. If anyone gets too close, they’re at risk. So she shuts herself off from everyone and everything. She filters her world through her cat-eye contacts and only lets in what she thinks can’t hurt her or anyone else. That all changes though when she steps onto the campus of Titan University. Her freshman year of college starts to chip away at years of self-protection and all is going well until shit starts to hit the fan. And by shit, i mean LIFE.

This book is amazing. I really wasn’t expecting to be so affected by it, but I am. I absolutely loved watching as Aubrey began to shed Raven and come into herself and when she began to revert back to her old ways I loudly protested. I think I could easily relate to this story because it addresses so many issues that people experience (or know others who experience) throughout their lives. Eating disorders, fucked up childhoods, and distorted self-perception are just a few of the serious issues that L.B. Simmons forces you to face. And I loved it – absolutely loved it.

Let’s not forget to talk about Kaeleb. He’s basically the most wonderful man in the universe. The wooing didn’t even have to begin with him – he had me immediately. The relationship between Kaeleb and Aubrey is deep and well developed. I felt that I knew them both and I was definitely cheering for them to TOTALLY GET MARRIED a la Quinn.

This book has so many feels in it I lost count. It’s such an unbelievable moving story of loss, love and acceptance. It’s about how to LIVE and be okay with living. These words didn’t just leap off the pages, they seeped into my bones and flipped the light on in my soul. IT’S SO SO GOOD.

If you’re looking for something to warm you up inside, grab this one. It’s like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day. #MustRead kids. go get it now.
