Fading’s Summary:

Can a guilty conscience keep wounds from healing?

Fine arts major, Candace Parker, grew up with a mother who thinks image is everything, and her daughter’s perfection will never be good enough. About to graduate college and pursue her dreams of becoming a professional ballerina, Candace decides it’s time to let go and have a little fun. But fun is short-lived when a brutal attack leaves her completely shattered.

The memories that consume and torment Candace are starting to destroy her when she meets Ryan Campbell, a successful bar owner. He feels instantly connected and tries to show her that hope is worth fighting for. But is Ryan harboring his own demons? As walls slowly begin to chip away, the secrets that are held within start to become painful burdens.

At what point do secrets become lies?

Longer Review:

I bought EK’s books because a month-ish ago I saw an epic facebook post shared by K. Bromberg in which E.K. basically tells authors who are complaining about bad reviews for their books and complaining about the industry and just complaining to go fuck themselves (I’m paraphrasing, obvi). Instead she threw her support behind readers & bloggers – even those who gave her a bad reviews. I read it and said FUCK YES E.K., I’m buying all of your books. And so I did. I don’t regret it.

E.K. Blair is an indie author who I prefer to now just refer to as: genius. This series is an incredibly thought provoking & deep work of literature that needs to be shared with the world. I’ve read a couple *cough* of erotica / romance novels and sometimes I find myself ranking or rating a book based upon it’s place in the genre. But no. Not this one. This is fantastic piece of fiction. Period.

I am in awe of this series. Not only is the storyline brilliant but the writing is fantastic. The story is emotionally jarring and imperfect in all the ways it should be. Yes, it’s a somewhat dark story but it’s also beautiful. It’s about pulling yourself out of the pit of despair; its about allowing others to help you when you can’t help yourself; its about learning to accept love. What better message is there than that?

Candace is strong enough to break. As we watch her try to pick up the fractured pieces of herself, I found myself wanting to comfort her just as much as Jase & Mark & Ryan. Speaking of Jase…his loyalty is unwavering & absolute. We should all have a friend so fucking awesome. and Ryan. OH MY GOD RYAN. I really can’t talk about this without giving spoilers, but know that when Ryan falls in love, he does it with his whole self. Also, Note: I love his mother immensely. Fuck, I wish my mother was as awesome as Donna.

After finishing Fading (and after picking up the pieces of my heart that had been scattered around the room) I was at a loss for words. Days later, I am still so unbelievably affected by this book. Fading shook me at the depth of my core. There will be Before I read Fading and After. My heart shook and shattered and burst. I cried. I fucking cried. Only Colleen Hoover makes me cry. Well done, E.K.

fadingimage

In Freeing, we learn about Jase’s story….and of course it’s fantastic. HOW COULD IT BE ANYTHING ELSE? Like many other readers, this was my first foray into a male/male love story. In case you were wondering, it made zero difference. What some may call as a risk for E.K., I say is perfection. My body shuddered & then warmed as Jase finally began to accept himself and fell in love with Mark. You get some pieces filled in that you were missing in Fading by viewing it from Jase’s perspective & you really find out just how much Candace is loved. By the way, Jase & Mark are the best. I’d like cookouts and snugglefests with them immediately. kthx.

and then there was Falling. Oh.My.God. Ryan’s story. RyanRyanRyanRyan. I knew he was a bit of a manslut, but I have to admit I was a little surprised at the extent. But it’s ok, because again we see Candace’s story in a new light. The shadows become a little lighter and the pixels a little clearer. You cannot read Fading without reading Falling. YOU CANNOT. I thought my heart was full at the end of Fading but I was so fucking wrong. The end of Falling (& the extra Finding Forever that’s part of the bundle) filled my soul. These pieces are so unbelievably necessary to this story and I loved every bit of this series.

In case you missed it, I fucking love these books. E.K. Blair goes right on my list of favorite authors – a place well earned. There are not enough stars to give.

Longer Review:

I really enjoyed these books. They’re different than many books in the genre & it was so refreshing to read. The summary is that Harley is a virgin sex addict. Trey is definitely NOT a virgin sex addict. Now, I know you’re saying – wait. back up. WHAT? VIRGIN SEX ADDICT? Oh yes. See? It’s definitely different. Harley & Trey actually meet the night before they really meet. They have a bit of a last hurrah before they go to therapy for their issues….but it’s different for both of them when they get together. Harley actually feels for the first time ever & Trey actually goes for a girl that’s his age. This is a different scenario than either of them have every experienced before. The next day they walk into their sex and love addicts support group and….well, shit, they’re both there. The books then follow the building of their friendship & relationship – the ups, the downs, the struggles, the issues. It’s so so good.

Harley and Trey made me so uncomfortable in such a good good way. The struggles they seek to overcome are deep and facing them head on makes them so vulnerable. I could FEEL it. That’s what makes a good book – All The Feels. and this one had them all for me. This love story made me so happy and I swear to Christ I fist pumped the air when Harley got a little sass in her step. The tattoos surely don’t hurt, but Trey is super sexy in every way, especially in the way he views Harley. [closes eyes….] sigh. it’s a good one.

I hate Harley’s mom. I mean, you’re supposed to. But FUCK HER. She’s the worst. Trey’s parent’s aren’t much better, but god, Harley’s mom just takes the cake. The end of the Thrill of It leaves you with a cliffhanger, so if you hate them, you’ve been forewarned – but frankly, I liked it.

ManTreeTattooRib

As for Every Second With You, well – I LOVE THIS STORY. This is seriously one of Lauren Blakely’s best writing. Trey and Harley capture you and hold you and break you and ahhhhh, warm your heart.

Let’s not talk about how I was thisclose to ripping off Trey’s man parts. Ohmylord There was a scene that made me SO ANGRY. but then, I took it all back because Trey is one of the greatest book boyfriends you will ever want to know. This just shows you how invested I was. and Harley’s strength?! she’s the spokeswoman for my 2015 mantra: hold your head high and your middle finger higher. There is an epic speech Trey gives to Harley’s mom and I was SO EXCITED. It was everything I wanted to say and more. ahhhh, perfection.

This series stretches you to pull for these characters in ways you don’t expect. It’s not always that you read an erotica novel and think that you’ve actually learned something about yourself. I definitely did here. I absolutely loved it!

Review: Ugly Love

ugly love

Author:   Colleen Hoover

Book:  Ugly Love

tl;dr recommendation: This book deserves twenty million stars, not just the five I could give it on GoodReads.

Longer Review:

ALL. THE. FEELS.

I cannot get Miles
out
of
my
Head [or heart].

Colleen Hoover is amazing. I set aside an entire day for her books – not because it will take me that long to read it – but because I know I will suffer an immense book hangover afterwards that will render me useless for anything else. Ugly Love doesn’t disappoint. To be honest, I read it days ago and I’m STILL REELING. It had no problem making My Top 10 Favorite Reads of 2014 list.

Are you prepared to Ugly Cry? You know the kind where your tears are uncontrollable, your face is contorted and there’s so much liquid streaming down you’re not really sure where it’s all coming from? Yeah, THAT KIND. This book will do it to you.

Blue-water

Miles Archer is an airline pilot who works, sleeps, eats, works, and has the occasional Thursday guy’s night with Corbin, his good friend and neighbor across the hall. When Tate moves in with her brother, Corbin-from-across-the-hall, she finds a drunk Miles sleeping in front of the door. This first simple interaction leads to SO. MUCH. MORE. The attraction between them is undeniable, but Miles can’t/won’t offer anything more than just sex. He has two rules: 1. Don’t ask about his past; and 2. Don’t expect a future.

Tate readily accepts this arrangement because she just can’t seem to say anything other than yes. I mean, come on, sex with hot Miles?! YES PLEASE. But as time progresses she can’t stop falling – and Miles can’t open himself up to the possibility of love. The hurt. The pain. The CONNECTION between these two characters is palpable. Colleen Hoover inserts some seriously steamy scenes into this novel that do not go unappreciated. I loved every single second of this book. I love Tate because she’s not a push over even when she’s so helplessly falling in love. She tries to protect her heart, but can’t. I mean, can ANYONE when faced with love? I love Miles because of the journey he takes to melt that wall of ice that guards his heart. It’s SO GOOD.

I LOVED IT! This book deserves twenty million stars, not just the five I could give it on GoodReads.

OWMS’ top 10 Favorite Reads of 2014

Top 10 Fav Reads 2014 with words

What’s the end of the year without revisiting some of my favorite reads?

My criteria for making it on this list is:
1) I read it this year; and
2) I fucking loved it.

Side Note: I am aware that there are more than 10 books on this list. That’s why it says top ten favorites READS not BOOKS. 🙂 But seriously, can you really just pick one book out of a series that you love? No. The answer is No.

Let’s get down to business:

1. The Crossfire Series (1-4) by Sylvia Day

Ohgoodfuckingchrist. This series slays me. I cannot wait for book 5. I NEED TO KNOW what happens like I need air to breathe. I almost wish I were kidding. Gideon Cross is perfection and I’m dying for the HEA that I know is coming. Please Sylvia, don’t let us wait too long…

2. The Driven Trilogy by K. Bromberg

Not only is K. Bromberg the nicest, most genuine person on the planet, but she can also write. For me, Colton didn’t enter my heart inch by inch, he surrounded it from all sides and then infiltrated. It was almost so sudden that I wasn’t even aware how attached I was to Colton at first. You can check out my full review here. I’m also dying for her 2015 releases, but that’s for another post…

3. Dirty Rowdy Thing by Christina Lauren

Can we get a little innuendo up in here?! I am a sucker for wit, charm, steamy sex, and stubbornness. This book has ALL OF THAT and more. I did a review of DRT which you can find here that tells you in more detail why I’m so goddammned obsessed.

4. Beautiful Player by Christina Lauren

I fucking love Will Sumner. I actually just did a re-read of this book the other day because I needed a good pick-me-up and there’s nothing this book does more than that. It literally warms my soul. Not kidding. I can feel the warmth spread through my body as Will falls in love with Hannah. I LOVE THEM IMMENSELY.

5. The Stark Trilogy by J. Kenner

How have I not done a review of this series yet? Total fail on my part which I shall rectify as soon as possible. I love love love Damien Stark. He’s an alpha billionaire with secrets but there’s just so much more to him than that. His love for Nikki is so pure and perfect I could re-read these books weekly and be happy.

6. Songs of Submission Series by CD Reiss

This series caught me totally off guard in the best way possible. I’m not even sure how I found it, but I am SO happy I did. Jonathan is hot and sexy and CD Reiss really delivers with this series. I felt like I ran a marathon after reading these, but they were so worth every single step. You can read my full review here.

7. Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan

OH.My.God. This book is utterly fantastic. It really is. It’s a great standalone novel that you can whip through quickly and that leaves you thoroughly satisfied. I think it lived up to its hype. I Floved it. You can find my full review here.

8. Seductive Nights Series by Lauren Blakely

Julia and Clay are awesome. They interact so perfectly together and talk so dirty, which is one of my favorite combinations in main characters. It doesn’t hurt that there’s some spanking, cuffing, and other fantastic debauchery involved. Haven’t read it? Put that shit on your list. And read my full review here.

9. One Night Trilogy by Jodi Ellen Malpas

These are the books that took me out of a book dry spell. After I thought something was wrong with me, that maybe I could never love another book again, these snuck up on me and made me FEEL. I really loved them. And here’s another that I need the rest of the story for….[FebruaryFebruaryFebruary…]. Full review found here!

10. Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

Holy mother of god. Colleen Hoover is the only author who makes me sob horrible, nasty, unattractive tears. This is one of my very favorite books this year and gave me the hugest book hangover. I spent most of the time reading this attempting to hide my ugly crying while sitting on the couch with my husband. I was unsuccessful. It’s a beautiful story. Gorgeous. I really can’t say enough about it other than you need to read it. And ideally not in a public place, unless you’re totally ok with tears streaming down your face in public. If so, go forth. HAVE TISSUES NEARBY. And read my review here.

2014 was really a great year for me. Things keep getting better and better and so do the books! I hope you all have a great NYE & let’s get ready for 2015!

Review: Archer’s Voice

archersvoice

Author:   Mia Sheridan

Book:  Archer’s Voice

tl;dr recommendation: Believe the hype. It’s THAT GOOD.

Longer Review:

Are you looking for a standalone novel that will give you the erotica you crave with the romantic substance you need? Then this is a necessary read. I finally got around to reading this book and I so should have done it sooner. I was a little hesitant starting out, because, well HYPE. This book has hype in spades. It’s been acclaimed as one of the best erotica novels of 2014 and because I’m a cynical person I wasn’t sure I’d be a believer, BUT I AM. ohhhh I am.

Bree finds herself in a small little town after escaping the terror she suffered with in the big city. She’s searching for peace, solace, comfort….and closure. She has nothing to lose but herself at this point and she’s holding on to those pieces for dear life. Archer is a loner and a bit of a town mystery. He’s a local who suffered incredible loss and trauma as a child that he’s never really recovered from. Can Bree and Archer save each other?

I loved this book. This was practically a spiritual experience for me. I could feel my heart expand and contract with every beat. I actually held my breath towards the end – not even realizing I was doing it. Their love story is unconventional and unpredictable and it held me until the very last page. They hold each other up in ways that neither of them are prepared for but then realize that they can no longer live without. It’s hard to really review this book and say why I loved it so much without revealing all of its secrets, but let’s just say that there is such a deeper connection between these characters that makes you long to find out every detail about them. You want them to break free from the past and watch them mold their future. Sigh. I’m smiling just thinking about them. This steamy and heartwarming book was one that I could. not. put. down. and I know that I will pick up again.

Review: Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

maybesomeday

Author:   Colleen Hoover

Book:     Maybe Someday

Series:    Maybe, Book #1

tl;dr recommendation: This story ripped open my heart and my fucking tear ducts. In a REALLY REALLY GOOD way.

Longer Review/Reaction:

ALL THE FEELS. Seriously, All The Fucking Feels. I cried my face off while reading this book and I am not an extraordinarily emotional person. I didn’t even know why I was crying at times. Was I angry? Sad? Happy? I DON’T KNOW. I clearly had a visceral reaction to this book. Basically I’m overly contemplative and introverting so hard. I’m not certain I’m in the proper state of mind to actually write this review, but HERE WE GO ANYWAY.

allthefeels      fallstogroundillbefine

This book involves a love triangle. YES, I am fully fucking aware that I don’t like love triangles. But to be completely honest I didn’t actually know what the book was about before I started reading it. I like doing that sometimes…it’s like a blind date with a book. that way we get to know each other without any expectations. and ohhhhh myyyyy godddddd. what a blind date. I just….I just….SIGH. Ok, maybe now I’ll really start the review:

We meet Sydney on a very not so happy twenty-second birthday. She finds out she’s been betrayed by her best friend/roommate and her boyfriend and this event leaves her heartbroken and homeless. She’s pretty much in a puddle literally and figuratively and finds herself living with Ridge, Warren and Bridgette – a strange yet fun group of twenty-somethings as I’ve ever read. They like pranks and they like revenge pranks even more. It’s pretty great. Ridge is a musician and even though he’s deaf he’s a musical genius. He writes songs for his brother’s band and Warren manages it. RIDGE HAS A GIRLFRIEND. of FIVE YEARS. who HE LOVES. very fucking much. and yet….and yet….Sydney ignites a piece of his heart that he didn’t even know existed. Oh sweet baby jesus it’s heartwrenching to watch them fall in love with each other while they desperately fight against it.

I lovelovelove how honest they are. I mean, they could have so easily swept their feelings under the rug, made a huge ball of awkward and tried to avoid it bouncing around the room. But they don’t. They address things. They try to be grown ups. They try to avoid temptation at all costs. And still, they fail miserably. This story ripped open my heart and my fucking tear ducts. My husband glanced at me while I was reading this at 8:30am one morning with tears running down my face and just said, “that good of a morning, huh?” They were tears of happiness, of sadness, of heartbreak, of love, of anger….I think I felt every human emotion possible during this read. But it’s SO GOOD. Ridge and Sydney experience a depth and range of emotions: some good, some bad, and some incredibly sexy. I may have screamed KISS HER! like twenty-thousand times. but then I didn’t want him to. but I did. See my problem?! I needed Sydney to just say when…

In case you missed it, I loved this book. I love being forced to read about difficult situations and how to navigate them. And I loved to see these two grow into people they can each respect even after everything that happened between them. I also loved the blubbering mess this book turned me into. #WorthIt. #MustRead.
