Sinful Love - Front cover

Intense. Devoted. Protective.

Michael Sloan is all of the above, with a hard tough edge to boot. He’s not the guy he used to be. Years ago, before all the s&%t went down, he was laidback, carefree, and even happy-go-lucky.

Life changed him. Hardened him.

There’s one woman though who can break down his walls. Someone who knew him then. Who can reach inside to that heart he protects fiercely…because she’s the only one he ever gave it to. When they collide, it’s tender and savage, gentle and rough, and makes them both hungry for more of this electric, once-in-a-blue moon kind of sexual chemistry. But it’s a battle of wills between Michael and the woman he loves, with words and emotions held close to the vest.

She doesn’t believe she can ever move on from her own heartbreak, but when Michael makes her feel for the first time in years, it’s both thrilling and scares the hell out of her, setting off all her flight instincts. He’s determined not to lose her again, but he’ll have to learn to let her in if he ever wants to fully heal from the past…

The problem is, she knows something about the night his family shattered. She has the missing puzzle piece…but neither one of them realizes it.

YET.

 REVIEW

FINALLY! The conclusion to the Sinful Nights series!! All of your questions will be answered – who killed the Sloans’ father…and why. Blakely writes with ease, as per usual, and twists a tale of a sweet love story combined with flakes of mystery. This second chance romance is sultry and adorable all at the same time.

Michael is a loveable character from the start – he’s incredibly kind, passionate and all too careful of the feelings of those around him. In fact, so much so that he’s been neglecting his own feelings for years. Every woman he’s ever dated has told him that he’s still hung up on Annalise, and he denied it – until he saw her again.

It’s like the world tilted on its axis when she stepped back into his life. She’s everything he remembered – and more. I absolutely loved the race of emotions and heat between the characters and I especially adored how open and honest and just soooo….UP FRONT they were about their feelings. I mean, sure, things come out here and there, but there’s not running and hiding and ducking and chasing.

Of course, that doesn’t mean their journey to a happily ever after is easy, either. This read will give you everything that you need a contemporary romance; however, I also thought it was a little too clinical. Like, all of the pieces of the puzzle were there right where they were supposed to be – the characters, the development, the flow…but I think that was my issue…it wasn’t organic. That, of course, does not mean it was bad at all. It’s fun, easy, sexy and sinful.

If you’re a Lauren Blakely fan (AND YOU SHOULD BE) then you will most definitely be thrilled with this final installment. Grab some wine, a couch and tear through this series in a weekend. You’ll thank me later. 4 Stars!

Release Blitz & Review: The Fire Between High & Lo by Brittainy C. Cherry

Title: The Fire Between High & Lo
Series: Romance Elements #2
Author: Brittainy C. Cherry
Genre: Romance
 Release Date: March 25, 2016

Blurb
There once was a boy, and I loved him.Logan Francis Silverstone and I were complete opposites. I danced, and he stood still. He was quiet, while I ran my mouth. He struggled to find a smile, and I refused to frown.

The night I saw the darkness that truly lived inside of him, I couldn’t look away.

We were broken together, yet somehow whole. We were wrong together, but always right. We were the stars that burned across the night sky, searching for a wish, praying for better tomorrows.

Until the day I lost him. He threw us away with one hasty decision–a decision that changed us forever.

There once was a boy, and I loved him.

And for a few breaths, a few whispers, a few moments, I think he loved me, too.

 REVIEW:

Of course I cried. Brittainy has a way with words that scorch your insides and bring out all the feels. This book most definitely does that. It rolls emotions through you – from anger to flat out hatred to love; The Fire Between High & Lo put me into a state of emotional turmoil I was expecting.

Logan is not a character you’re going to stay in love with. At least he wasn’t for me. His flaws are big. His scars are deep. And his actions are reprehensible. The way that he treated Alyssa and the good pieces of his family was awful. I hated him for it. It’s very likely because I have personal experience with his particular affliction that taints my opinion of him. Makes him less redeemable. Makes me less sympathetic. Makes me colder to his journey.

But that doesn’t mean that the story isn’t beautiful. Logan grows as a character and does win you back over. He journey is long but it’s worth reading. I did wish that Alyssa had a little bit more fire in her. That she didn’t give in so easily and forgive so quickly. But then again, when a true love flashes through your life, do you give it up so quickly when there’s a chance for good again?

Cherry writes this book in a somewhat Ugly Love style – it was almost poetic in places, which nestles its way into your chest and makes a home. This book will definitely make you react: cry, laugh, scream, smile – it’s all there. It’s a beautiful story edged in darkness. It’s a story about how the good can win after all. 4.5 stars!

Excerpt
“Yeah, well, now that Knox is back in town, we’re gonna have to find him a steady girl,” Cassie says, furrowing her brow as if she’s scanning her mental rolodex.“Yeah, between the two of us we know plenty of girls who are still single.” Savannah pulls her phone out, ready to start scrolling through her contacts.

Cash laughs. “Don’t hold your breath, ladies. The local diamond dolls are gonna be all over our boy here. Let him enjoy it before you start trying to chain him down.”

Groupies. I’ve gotta admit—the routine gets old, but the eye candy never fails to tempt me. Like I said, you only live once. “Hey, the last girl I hooked up with didn’t even know who I was,” I can’t help pointing out.

Ryder laughs. “Is that what she told you?”

I roll my eyes.

“Did you find her hidden under a rock, then? I hear those cloistered nuns are hot.” Cash grins at me, that old twinkle in his eye. He’d never mess around on Savannah, but I swear that’s made him worse than ever about hounding me to go hook up in his place.

“Actually, I met her right here in this fine establishment of ours.”

“Nice. Hooking up in the library—exactly what we had in mind,” Cash says with more than a little enthusiasm.

“You say that like we haven’t already,” Savannah butts in with a pointed eyebrow, which earns her a high-five from Cassie.

“Hey don’t change the subject,” Ryder interrupts. “You’ve been holding out on us, bro. When was this? And who, someone from school?”
“New Year’s. And nope. Never seen her before in my life. Or since, for that matter.”

It may not have been the first time a New Year’s countdown and a whole bunch of booze ended with a girl screaming my name, but this time was different. For one thing, this time I was sober enough that my memory of the way she felt beneath me in that baseball field is still seared red-hot into my brain. The number of times I’ve relived that night, her hands all over me, her breathing heavy as she urged my fingers closer to her soaking panties . . .

“So that’s where you disappeared that night, you dirty dog!” Cash punches my arm across the table.

Savannah laughs and tops off her and Cash’s glasses of bubbly with the last of the champagne. “Anybody you care to see again?”

Yeah, you could definitely say that. If I knew how to find her, that is.

“Would if I could,” I admit. “But she was a one-and-done kinda girl. Said no when I asked for her digits.”

“Oooooh,” Ryder says. “Love ‘em and leave ‘em. The very best kind.”

Cassie punches him in the arm and steals his drink out from under him. “A mystery woman, nice. What did she look like? Maybe she’s a regular.”

I open my mouth to describe her—long brown hair, huge, sexy, deep brown eyes, a sway in her step when she walks, a gravelly voice when she’s coming—okay maybe I wouldn’t have added that last part. But right as I’m about to start speaking, a knee collides with me from behind.

I manage to keep from dropping my scotch, though just barely. I’m about to spin around and bark a curse at whoever just staggered into me, when Jackson, who’s been oddly quiet so far, stiffens. “Oh, hey,” he says, looking not at me, but above and behind me.

Everyone’s eyes follow his, and I turn around to find myself staring up at a familiar face.

“What, that’s your only greeting to your beloved little sister?”

There, standing behind me, close enough to touch, close enough that I can smell the familiar floral bite of her perfume, is my not-so-mysterious-after-all New Year’s hookup. Grinning sarcastically while looking straight at Jackson.

Little sister? Jackson’s younger sister is my mysterious New Year’s hookup?

Fuck.

You have got to be kidding me.

 REVIEW

We knew that Knox and Shelby were hot from a night with KNOX. I mean, if you read the novella (which you totally fucking SHOULD) then you knew to expect some serious sex and intense chemistry. Jagger does not disappoint.
I absolutely loved that Knox and Shelby don’t play the lie game with each other. They know they’re attracted to the other. They know that they probably shouldn’t start something because Knox is her brother’s best friend. They know that this could end badly. BUT they can’t help themselves. And then it turns into SO.MUCH.MORE.
The emotional twists in this book threw my surprised face on. Like REALLY JACKSON?! FUCKING REALLY?! You’re desperate to fix all the things that have gone wrong and you’re cheering for Shelby and Knox throughout the whole book. Especially when their relationship suffers Murphy’s Law of Relationship Drama. I mean, they knew that they’d have to keep a lid on their love, but when they have to shove those feelings in the closet *cough* nothing good can come of that.
You will be entertained, endeared and engaged. Jagger does sexy bastards so well that they’re not really….uhhh…bastards. Knox throws his stick around and doesn’t let a foul ball throw him off course. This book gets five stars for my complete enjoyment and seriously hot sex scenes. Love this, Eve!

REVIEW

Billy Jeffers is the best Rocker of Steel YET! Demanding, intense and undeniably attractive, Billy will soar to the top of your book boyfriends list. Billy keeps trying to shut out the teases that Madison keeps sending his way – she is his best friend’s sister after all – but there’s only so much a man can take. When he finally gives in it’s explosive & hot – ripping away any control he had of staying away.

There’s so much more to this story than the amazing hate f@#cking going on – Billy’s father has thrown him into a precarious position that he needs to get out of. Suddenly, Madison is his ally – the girl he could barely stand a few days ago is holding his secrets with care. All of his secrets *winks*

I completely fell for this book. It’s funny, sexy and an easy read. Billy knows how to use his fingers…and his tongue…mmmhmmmm. Fields catches you in her net and holds you tight to the story. This rocker will strum his way into your heart with only a few strokes. Thankfully he takes longer when he’s stroking other things…;)

You need Billy Jeffers in your life. LONG LIVE THE ROCKERS OF STEEL! 5 stars!

Review: Jackson’s Trust by Violet Duke

25738929

Author: Violet Duke

Book: Jackson’s Trust

tl;dr recommendation: There are no penalties in this sweet love story

Book Summary:

New York Times bestselling author Violet Duke kicks off her fun and sexy new Fourth Down series with a heartwarming friends-to-lovers romance between a no-strings-attached sports analyst and the hottest damn tomboy he’s ever met.

It’s no secret that sports analyst Jackson Gray doesn’t do relationships. What is a secret, however, is the reason why. Jackson’s life is . . . complicated. And it doesn’t help that his current hands-off “friendship” is with the cute-as-hell new sideline reporter he’s assigned to train. Turns out, not only is the woman damn sweet, she also knows as much about football as he does. Like it or not though, Jackson has to remind himself that sex is the only thing he has to offer . . . until now.

Leila Hart’s fast-growing friendship with Jackson is something she’d never risk, no matter how unbelievably seductive the reward. Becoming an NFL sportscaster has always been the goal, and thanks to Jackson’s fierce support and mentoring, it all finally seems within reach. Problem is, a girl can only take so much of that sexy-as-sin voice whispering dirty, filthy football stats in her ear before she loses all self-control. A workplace romance with Jackson is a disaster waiting to happen, especially for someone with big dreams . . . and secrets of her own.

Longer Review:

If you’re looking for a sweet sports romance with wit, humor and plenty of heat, then you NEED to run to pick up this book! Jackson’s attraction to Leila is instantaneous and all consuming – which is shocking since he’s never wanted more with anyone else. He’s not even truly sure that he can give her more…his life is complicated.

Leila is full of spitfire, one-liners and intelligence. She’s smart as hell and I loved her for it. She makes Jackson work for what he wants, even though he’s not quite sure what his end goal is. He just knows that she feels so good in his arms, and that her kisses light him up inside.

Duke is masterful at creating passion with grace and sweetness with humor. This story is full of fantastic characters you actually want to cheer on, root for and hope they score. There’s also a TON of dirty talk. While both aren’t sure that they can…or should…get involved with the other, they just can’t help it. It’s like fates colliding and the world halting to make sure that they know that they’re supposed to be with the other.

There are no penalties in this sweet love story – Violet throws a glorious pass with Jackson’s Trust! 4.5 stars!

REVIEW:

Gripping. Heartwrenching. Emotional. The fear and the sadness, the hope and the longing, these emotions take hold of you while you get inside Keller and Britt’s minds. They each come from the same, yet completely different place. This book is beautifully tragic because it takes one life changing event and shows us what happens after.

It’s not just the day and the weeks after that are affected by such a terrible crime. A horrific incident. It’s entire lives that are destroyed. Entire lives that will forever have an imprint due to evil.

Keller thinks he’s a killer – and maybe he is. If he wasn’t so selfish and he wasn’t so much of a fucking teenager maybe his life wouldn’t have been so affected. Whereas Britt did literally nothing wrong to deserve the pain and lifelong penalty for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The greatest thing about this book though is that it’s really about healing – it grips you and commands your attention. The writing felt a lot like Katy Evans, in a great way. Perhaps that’s because it’s about a fighter, but I really felt that it was more than that. Heather lets you peek into the minds of these characters and feel what they’re feeling – every raw, gritty and sickening piece of it.

I flew through this book and gasped a sigh when it was over. Their hearts are the strongest parts of them and the hardest part to heal. Nothing is sugarcoated and everything is flayed open, letting you see the guilt, misery, despair….and love that swirls between the characters. Heather killed it. 5 stars.

Excerpt:  Britt freaks out

Britt and Gabriel are waiting for me in his office so we can start our meeting. After my interaction with Wolfe, I’m seething and frustrated. All I want to do is jump into the cage and beat the fuck out of something, release this shit building up inside. Confusing new emotions like jealousy are dueling with my usual focused, raw fury.

The dark, hollow place in my chest isn’t equipped for this. I fight, I fuck, I exist. Nothing more, nothing less.

Furious, I walk over to Gabriel’s office and shove open the door. It bangs against the wall with a loud crack, causing Gabriel to frown and Britt to cry out. Just like that, she drops to the floor, curling into a ball and covering her head with her hands.

Gabriel leaps to his feet, hurrying around his desk to crouch next to a huddling, quivering Britt. Stunned, I stand at the door frozen, unsure what is going on or what I should do.

Meu filha! Britt! What is happening?” Gabriel’s voice hitches as he tries to pull Britt out from under his desk. His head whips around to face me. “Killer! ¡Venha aqui e ayudar!” (Get over here and help..)

I cross the space in two quick steps, approaching Gabriel’s desk from the opposite side. Britt’s tiny frame is tucked into a tight ball, her knees pulled to her chest, head ducked, and arms curled protectively over her head.

Protecting her from what?

“Britt,” I say in as composed of a voice as I can manage, which at this moment, isn’t saying much. Not a lot freaks me out, but right now, watching Britt fall to pieces, has me struggling to keep calm. “Please, come out.”

Britt is quietly sobbing, her body shuddering in fear. Watching her in such obvious distress sends a stabbing pain through my chest. Not sure this is the best thing for her, but not knowing what else to do, I crawl under the desk. Being as large as I am, I can only get my head and shoulders in next to her.

Gabriel slides into nervous, staccato Portuguese. “I will leave you to take care of her. Let me know when she’s feeling better and I will return.” He stands and leaves the room, gently closing the door behind him.

He left me with her?

What the fuck am I supposed to do? At a loss, I do the only thing that comes to mind. It worked to relax her before, so why not? I gather her tiny, trembling body up in my arms, and hold her. Britt immediately unwinds her arms, clutching me tight, burying her face into my shirt, her tears dampening the fabric.

On the floor in my trainer’s office, lying half under a desk, a tiny shard of my black soul becomes human again.

Review: Heartbreaker by Kat and Stone Bastion

29148001

Author: Kat & Stone Bastion

Book: Heartbreaker

tl;dr recommendation: This friends to lovers romance made me swoon and smile. 4 stars!

Book Summary:

Kiki Michaelson wants one wild night to forget her starving-artist worries. Simple.

Only instead of Darren Cole becoming her one-night stand, he taunts her with a challenge. Then while she’s trying to best him at his own game, he turns out to be the last thing she’s prepared for: someone she wants to keep.

Which means all he can ever be…is a friend.

Darren Cole never allows a girl to get close—not close enough to matter.

Then storms in Kiki Michaelson, a beautiful, fearless temptation that rocks his world off-balance. But he fights their attraction, unwilling to gamble something physical with their close ties. Until the passionate sculptor exposes her heart and breaks his wide open.

In that moment it becomes clear: she could never be just a friend.

Sometimes what you run from…is exactly what you need.

***HEARTBREAKER is a standalone, full-length new adult romance told in dual POV. Due to mature themes and adult language, this book is for those 18 and older.***

Longer Review:

Heartbreaker is fun, flirty and sweet. Kiki and Darren are friends to lovers that you want to watch fall together. The Bastions write extremely well and know how to throw a hot sentence…or scene together. I could absolutely feel the heat rising from the pages with each flirt, smirk and wink.

HOWEVER, Darren is really hot. I mean, twist your hands in your lap and try to not stare hot. He’s also one of the most stand up guys there is – but due to his obligations he’s unable to fully commit to Kiki. Whereas Kiki is only after Darren for his potential at being her next one night stand. Until he changes the rules.

While I don’t entirely understand the title in relation to the actual words in the book (Darren is certainly not a heartbreaker insomuch that he’s not a serial manwhore – and neither is Kiki either, even though she is somewhat of a serial womanwhore) and the cover literally has nothing to do with the plot, I still enjoyed the story itself.

This friends to lovers romance made me swoon and smile. 4 stars!

Review: The Mind by Kate Stewart

Author: Kate Stewart

Book: The Mind

tl;dr recommendation: You’ll leave this story with a heavy heart but a renewed spirit that love exists. 4.5 stars!

Book Summary:

We fell in love in a lightning strike, a sudden anomaly in a sea of lost people.
He knew right away, yet I was hesitant. I could have never prepared myself for a love like ours.
No one could.
As a child, I had conjured an amazing story in my mind. It was a story I could retell about a man that would move me like no other; a story about the way we met and how he had swept me off my feet. But, the ending to that fairytale was so far from the reality.
No one will want to hear that story now, but for Grant, I will always tell it.

***Explicit Sex and Language. Not for those who are not fans of spontaneous love affairs.

Reading Order for The Reluctant Romantics Series

The Fall
The Mind 1.5 (Novella for Grant and Rose)
The Heart (Coming March) 2016

Longer Review:

If you’re looking for an HEA you’re going to have to wait. While Kate spins us into a fairytale love story she also crushed your heart with her pen…slowly and completely. I had read The Fall so I KNEW what was going to happen with Grant and Rose’s story but I still had to read it. I had to feel the all consuming love rush over my skin and infiltrate my heart.

Of course that means that my world was shattered into tiny pieces after I was finished. I need the next book. I need for Rose to get her happily ever after. Of course, without being spoilery, Grant does not wrong – in fact he does everything right. He is the perfect man for her. He’s just fucking perfect in general.

So when everything happens and their instant and soul scorching love affair spirals downward I was as heartbroken as Rose. Stewart is a masterful storyteller. You’ll leave this story with a heavy heart but a renewed spirit that love exists. It’s real. It can be perfect and tragic all at one. GAH. Love you, Kate.

Smart and sexy Dani Carr knows as much about football as any man–maybe more. It’s always been her dream to make a living talking about the game she loves. But Dani’s not interested in being just the usual eye-candy sideline reporter; she wants to be the first woman analyst on a pre-game show, the ultimate in exclusive boys-club jobs. And it turns out, that despite the odds, she has the talent to get her there.

Star quarterback-and heartthrob–Tyson Palmer always did things in spectacular fashion, including ruining his career after debuting as a first-round draft pick. When the head coach of the Austin Mavericks refuses to let him waste his million dollar arm, Tyson makes a Hail Mary pass at redemption and succeeds with everyone…except Dani, who appears to be using her high-profile commentator job to make a name for herself at his expense.

Dani refuses to let anyone forget about Tyson’s transgressions….and for good reason. There’s history between these two, sizzling history that dates back to their college days, and it ended in another spectacular flame-out of Tyson’s. He’s conveniently forgotten all about that episode because Dani is no longer the cute girl next door he barely remembers–she’s a bombshell with huge ratings and a long memory.

But can a woman trying to claw her way to the top and a quarterback who knows all about rock bottom make it to the Super Bowl without destroying each other in the process? And what will happen when Tyson-riding high on his career comeback-realizes he needs to make an even more important comeback with Dani?

REVIEW:

Ahhhh, second chance love with a hint of sex makes for an actually pretty delightful quick and easy read. If you’re looking for downright dirty, you’ll need to turn your head because that’s not happening here. BUT, for the sexy romance fans, you’ll eat this book right up with it’s sweet story and easy going characters.
After throwing herself at Tyson and essentially only gaining a notch on her (and his) bedpost, Dani is heartbroken. She wanted more. She wanted to help Tyson build himself into the person she knew he could be. But he wasn’t there yet and he barely remembers their errrrr bang session? I feel like with this book I should use the word ‘coupling’ or something.
ANYWAY, of course when she meets up with him again she holds back. I mean, who wouldn’t? She doesn’t trust him even though he’s more than trustworthy at this point. Their relationship is ups and downs from the start. It’s basically a combination of second chance love and enemies to lovers – which means if you’re a sucker for those stories, you’ll absolutely adore this one.
While some of the story felt a little forced (I still don’t entirely understand the point of LaRue, one of the secondary characters), I overall loved Dani and Tyson and I was more than happy to be swept away on their journey.
Easy, light and quick, you’ll want to tackle Tyson to the ground and kiss him senseless. The Total Package makes a great play! 3.75 stars!

Porn Star by Laurelin Paige and Sierra Simone
Release Date: March 8th

Porn Star Ebook Cover

Synopsis:

You know me.

Come on, you know you do.

Maybe you pretend you don’t. Maybe you clear your browser history religiously. Maybe you pretend to be aghast whenever someone even mentions the word porn in your presence.

But the truth is that you do know me.

Everybody knows Logan O’Toole, world famous porn star.

Except then Devi Dare pops into my world, and pretty soon I’m doing things that aren’t like me—like texting her with flirty banter and creating an entire web porn series just so I can get to star in her bed. Again. And again.

With Devi, my entire universe shifts, and the more time I spend with her, the more I realize that Logan O’Toole isn’t the guy I thought he was.

So maybe I’m not the guy you thought I was either.

REVIEW

Porn moves mainstream with Logan and Devi’s first scene. Paige and Simone create characters you want to fuck and hang out with, which is a great because that’s what both of these characters do. With each other and others.

Logan O’Toole is an unapologetic porn star. He owns his own company and fucks women for a living. His last relationship ended three months ago in epic flair – well, it was epic for him because he still isn’t sure he’s over it. Raven left him without a word and he spent a few weeks trying to find them at the bottom of a bottle.

When Logan meets Devi – or rather, re-meets her – he’s reminded of the intense connection they had during that one scene where she gave him a blowjob. That it wasn’t made up. That it wasn’t a figment of his imagination.

The fire between Devi and Logan is hella hot. The project they’re working on is almost too much for them to handle – is it real? is it fake? Are the feelings they’re having manufactured?

While the name of the book is enough to think that there’s going to be dirty sex and massive orgies, it’s really not like that. Porn is a job, just like any other – except they have sex with other people as part of that job. The big question is what’s right for them and what’s right. Devi’s family is to die for – they’re pretty awesome, sweet and have cornered the market on oversharing. Logan’s family is similarly supportive, which is great (albeit not entirely realistic). There are a few parts of this book that made me go overly analytical, but I think that’s just my own perspective of the porn industry getting in the way of the story.

Regardless, the characters practically burst at the seems as they try to capture their feelings with words and sex. Porn Star builds romance and heat right into each scene – I’ll make porn with Logan O’Toole any day. 4 stars!

Excerpt:

I spin around and throw my phone as hard as I can into the pool.

It lands with a small splash, sinking like a brushed-aluminum stone straight to the bottom. My momentary satisfaction is eclipsed by immense regret, because I just got that phone a few weeks ago. Fuck it, I can get a new one tomorrow. If that’s the price I have to pay to keep myself separate from Raven, then so be it.

I take a few healthy chugs of the Laphroaig.

“I hope you’ve got a good warranty,” a cheerful voice says from next to me. Even over the smoky scent of the whisky, I smell her. Cinnamon and sunshine.

I inelegantly swallow the Scotch still in my mouth, turning to face the person next to me. “Devi.”

She flashes me her sunny grin, and then returns the greeting by playfully bumping her shoulder against my arm. Heat flares across my bicep, emanating from the place where our bare skin touched, and the heat slowly migrates towards my chest, independent of the blood now pumping to my groin.

I am suddenly very aware of the fact that Devi and I have never been alone. Strange, given that we’ve given each other orgasms, but Raven’s Real Playdates was the only time we’ve worked together, and there are so many people on a porn set that it’s impossible to feel any sense of alone-ness, even when you’re staring them in the eyes while they suck you off. And even though we’ve seen each other at parties and events since then, we’ve only ever said hi or how are you or where’s the drinks? Not exactly the basis for a deep understanding of one another.

So I should probably explain why I just chucked a brand new phone into the water, and also maybe not reveal the fact that I have a massive crush on her.

I try to muster the casual, flirty guy I was earlier tonight. “Devi, I…”

I jack off to you almost every day.

“…I, uh, didn’t know anyone else was out here. Or I wouldn’t have, you know.” I mime throwing the phone.

She laughs and then bends down to unfasten her leather heel. “If it’s in a good case, it might still be okay,” she says. I watch, transfixed, as she kicks off both shoes, shimmies out of her shorts, and then walks to the edge of the pool. She’s wearing what legally might qualify as underwear, but only just barely.

Have I mentioned Devi Dare’s ass? Because I should. She has one of the best asses known to mankind. Plump and thick and juicy, the kind of ass that invites biting and squeezing, and the way it slopes out from her small waist is pure poetry. And those legs—despite the obvious muscles in her calves and thighs, they still move as she walks, like her ass does, and there’s something so healthy about it, so tantalizing about her body with its wide hips and slightly soft stomach and full breasts. She’s sexy in such a visceral, biological way, the kind of way that says you want to make babies with me. My cock lengthens as I watch her, tens of thousands of years of evolution telling me to haul her off and impregnate her.

She turns, hands on her hips. “Are you going to join me?”

“I was just enjoying the view,” I say, and it comes out a little too raspy, a little too honest, but then I follow it up with a weak grin and then she laughs and jumps into the pool. With a final gulp of whisky, I put the cork in the bottle and then fling myself in after her, clothes, shoes and all.

The water is cool and it’s the best kind of contrast to the dry heat of the night and the warmth of the Scotch in my stomach, and the new kind of warmth that’s agitating in my chest, something frictive and thrilling and pressing up against my anger and my broken heart. Something that started the moment Devi brushed up against my arm.

I jumped into the deep end, and so it’s a few beats before my feet press flat against the bottom and I can push myself back up. I break the surface, sputtering, and awkwardly try to swim over to Devi with one hand still clenched around my Scotch bottle. She treads water as steadily and gracefully as a water nymph, her long hair floating around her shoulders and her gold top drifting away from her skin, giving me just the barest glimpse of one nipple, dark rose and peaked into a tight furl. Water droplets cling to the thick fringe of her eyelashes.

“You’re not very good at swimming,” she points out as I make my way closer.

“Never liked it much,” I say, swimming past her and moving to where my feet can touch. With a sigh of relief, I set my feet down, examine the Scotch bottle to make sure no pool water leaked in, and then I take a long drink. I’m on my way to being drunk, but I’m intent on sealing the deal. What can I say? I’m a finisher.

Devi drifts up next to me, holding something in her hand. It takes me a minute to realize that it’s my phone, the entire reason we spontaneously jumped into the pool in the first place. And somehow, miraculously, the pricey case the Apple Store girl talked me into buying has saved the phone. The screen still glows with my unwritten text message.

Somehow, between the pool and the Scotch and Devi Dare with no pants on, I’ve lost the urge to talk to Raven. I take the phone and toss it carelessly onto the concrete and then turn back to Devi.

You, on the other hand, seem like quite the swimmer,” I say with a smile, offering her the Scotch. She takes it and raises the bottle to her lips.

“I was raised in California, you know,” she says and then takes a drink.

“Well, so was I. But my parents are Boston transplants, so I guess they never saw swimming as a priority for me.”

She hands the bottle back to me. “I think I had floaties before I had a bicycle. My parents are very, uh…” She searches for the right words. “Natural people. They think it’s important to be periodically cleansed of negative energy, and flowing water is one of the best ways to do that. So we went swimming at least once a week.”

I can see the faintest blush coloring the apples of her cheeks, as if she’s embarrassed of what her parents believe. And then I wonder if she’s embarrassed because she believes it a little too.

God, that blush is so sexy. I want to lick it right off her face. And then pin her down and lick her everywhere.

She tilts her head to the sky. “You can see Cassiopeia tonight.”

I look up, following her gaze, but I see nothing other than the golden glow hovering above the city and a smattering of faint, twinkling stars. “Is Cassiopeia a constellation?” I venture.

She laughs and nods, and then she reaches over and takes my head in her hands. My pulse thrums, that warmth in my chest explodes into flames, and I want her to kiss me kiss me kiss me, but before I can turn my head to her, she trains my face to the sky, facing the right direction this time.

“Do you see it?” she asks. Her mouth is close to my neck, and I wonder what it would feel like if she bit me there. “It looks like a letter M.” She traces the shape of it with her fingers, until finally I see it–an underwhelming handful of tired stars.

“You can’t see it this far into the city sometimes,” she continues.

“Cassiopeia sounds like a porn name,” I say frankly and she laughs again.

“Ptolemy named it.”

I give her a blank look. I got pretty good grades in school, but it’s been more than ten years since graduation, and anything not intimately related to film or the kind of math I need to run my business has been filtered out of my brain.

“Ptolemy was a Greek astronomer,” she explains, giving me an amused glance. “He named it after a famous queen in Greek mythology. She was so beautiful and vain and boastful that she brought the wrath of Poseidon down on her kingdom.”

Beautiful, vain, boastful. My mind swerves back to Raven, possibly still in this very house, possibly still being screwed with that evil smile on her face. Where is Poseidon when you need him?

No.

No, I won’t let Raven crowd into my happy, drunk moment with Devi and the Scotch. I speak as much to drive away thoughts of my ex as to comment on Devi’s astronomy knowledge. “You know a lot about this shit,” I tell her, turning my eyes back to her face completely.

And now she really blushes. “I really like astronomy. Stars and galaxies and stuff. It makes life feel so…big…you know?”

The thing is, I do know. That big feeling, I mean. I get it every time I watch an amazing film, every time I imagine my own films with just the right setting and just the right cinematography and just the right score.

“I’ve never met a performer who’s told me anything like that,” I say. And it’s true. Not once have I been around another adult film star and had them confess a purely impractical fascination. A call toward something that makes them feel like life is magical.

She blinks, and the way her long, thick eyelashes brush against her wet cheeks is arresting. “Really?”

“Really. Devi Dare, I do believe you are my first.”
