Book: Play Harder

tl;dr recommendation: I want Eric and Jordan to Play ME Harder. 4 stars!

Book Summary:

WARNING: This book is 100% hard-riding, dirty-talking alpha times two. Read at your own risk.

Having him is the most dangerous play of all…

Now that Miami star quarterback Jordan Barr has had a hot, wild night with halfback Eric “The Brick” Higgins he can’t get him off his mind. Eric is under his skin, but he needs to learn a lesson—that Jordan calls the shots when it comes to these sorts of red-hot entanglements.

And that lesson will be conducted in bed with every inch of Eric’s ripped, muscular body bared for Jordan’s pleasure.

Jordan is the most intense, commanding lover Eric has ever had. Trouble is, the two of them have an enemy. As rumors of game fixing ratchet up, compromising photos land on their phones, as well as a note to pay up or be exposed. Eric’s ready to walk away, but when the threats intensify, the men must work together to figure out who the hell is gunning for them.

And working together can only lead to one thing…

An even hotter, harder, sexier encounter.

But the more they come together, the more determined their enemies are to tear them apart.

Play Harder is the second installment in a three-part MM romance trilogy that ends in a cliffhanger.

Review:

Well shit, I want Eric and Jordan to Play ME Harder. This book combines a blackmail scheme, a football cheating scandal and two thick cocks, which is all just enough to keep you engaged and wet. There’s actually a connection forming between the two players – one that extends to a potential relationship outside of the bedroom. But they’re each at risk of losing something valuable to them if the news goes public…

The drama is layered perfectly between hot and delicious sexual tension. Both men show their alpha side in scenes that left me fanning myself. I mean, seriously – how can I turn down a book that promises slamming lips and hips together and dirty demands? Answer: I CANNOT. Alpha men are my weakness – two alpha men leave me breathless.

The ending of this one is a cliffhanger – of course – and it’s written in a way that leaves a ton of questions. I’m aching a little bit wondering what’s going to happen.

Play Harder is a hot and sensual quick hit that had me ready to score. BOOK 3!!!!!!! NEED. 4 stars!

tl;dr recommendation: Are you ready to get Conned?! This book has plenty to buzz about: it’s easily relatable, contains a growly and sexy alpha man with a heart of gold and a backboned woman with a penchant for saying what’s on her mind. 4.5 stars!

Book Summary:

I’ve always known she was too good for me, but that never stopped me from wanting her.

And then I finally had her for one night.

A night I don’t remember.

I figured I’d blown my shot.

But now she’s walked back into my life, and this time, I have the upper hand. I want my second chance.

Will she be able to see the man beneath this ink?

Longer Review:

Are you ready to get Conned?! This book has plenty to buzz about: it’s easily relatable, contains a growly and sexy alpha man with a heart of gold and a backboned woman with a penchant for saying what’s on her mind. I love that Meghan makes me think one thing will happen and then flips it entirely on its head. Predictably is not her specialty and I couldn’t love her more for it.

Con and Vanessa share a crazy history and an even more complicated present. The reasons they can’t be together are a mile long, while the reasons they want to be together can be explained only with feelings. It’s a star crossed lovers story at its finest.

While I obviously loved this book, I didn’t connect to Vanessa as much as I wanted – even though we had a shit ton in common – and I felt that I was missing certain details of their “one night” together as well as their history from high school. Those little details were important to me as a reader and I wanteddd them. There was also just so so much going on. This one is action packed which was both great and sometimes hard to follow.

Of course, that doesn’t mean the book wasn’t fucking fantastic – because it was. Sex, muscles and ink never looked so delicious. Con is a man who will make you jump without thought and who will melt your core with his dirty words while Vanessa will knee you in the balls if you speak to her the wrong way (that’s my girl!)

While Con and Vanessa attempt to navigate their social circles, my heart had no problem finsing direcrions to open for them. Beneath this Ink will take you on a wild ride – it’s best if you just put you head against Con’s back, wrap your arms around his waist and hold the fuck on.

4.5 stars!

Julia loves her new job, and she knows better than to think she can keep it and Dane. Even if he wasn’t her boss, Julia’s painful history has given her ample reason to steer clear of rich, powerful charmers. Still, their chemistry is unlike anything she’s known, and when it becomes too much to resist, they agree to one no-strings night together. But instead of quenching the fire, the intense encounter only proves how much they have to lose—or win…

Review:

This is such a sweet and sultry love story – I actually wasn’t entirely sure I was going to love it at first, but damnit Dane was perfect. Julie can’t quite grasp that Dane is too good to be true: he’s rich, he’s offering her the job of a lifetime and he’s hot. The problem is that he’s a lot like a prior man in her life that let her down and ruined her life.

Dane knows that Julie’s been through a lot but he’s willing to stick it out – and stick it in other places too. What starts out as a no string attached attraction quickly builds strings that tie them together when they least expect it.

I really liked all of the supporting characters in this book – especially Tess and Kalvin. While Dane and Julia are being stubborn, their best friends are there to rein them back in and tell them what they’re doing wrong.

More Than You Know puts a great twist on the millionaire hotel owner story. Julia is so much more complex than I was expecting and I totally loved that she was a bit older than your average romance heroine and she was still sexy as hell.

Fun, sweet, sultry and sexy – you’ll want to get to know these characters! 3.5 stars.

Excerpt:

The sleek car had already pulled onto the Cross Island Parkway when his cell phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket, glanced at the caller ID, and answered with a smile. “Hey, Tess. Almost at the restaurant, maybe another twenty minutes or so.”

“Damn,” Tess sighed. “I hoped you’d be running late, or I wouldn’t be. I’m still at the office.”

“Oh.” Dane let out a chuckle. Tess worked in midtown Manhattan. “Well, that puts a crimp in our plans, huh?”

“Yeah. I’m so sorry. But listen, I can make it up to you, and you’ll thank me later,” Tess wheedled.

“You’ll still stay over tonight, right? I should be home by the time you get back after the club. I’ll see you in the morning?”

“Yes, you will.”

“Good. Because I really don’t know what time I’ll get out of here. Gotta finish this proposal.”

“Don’t work too hard,” Dane said with affection.

“And hey, don’t forget to eat something.”

“I won’t, Mother Hen,” she joked. “My assistant already ordered me dinner, it’s on its way.”

“Good.” Dane looked out the window at the passing scenery as the driver maneuvered the car from the Cross Island to the LIE. It was early spring, and the trees were finally budding, a sea of yellowgreen and white and pink. The sky was a deep blue above the branches as the sun had just set, but sincethey were heading east, the changing colors of the sky were behind him.

Tess had called him the day before to tell him about the club on Long Island, and its singer. “It’s a martini bar, over in Glen Bay. On Friday nights, they have a regular singer who does everything from standards to Adele. Jeannie and her husband went there with friends two weeks ago and according to Jeannie, this woman’s got a knockout voice, and is something of a knockout herself. So, since you haven’t found your chanteuse yet, want to go check it out? I’ll come with you.”

“Sure,” he’d said. “Your best friend is a good enough reference for me. Why not? I’ve been looking all over Manhattan; maybe I just didn’t look far enough east. Frankly, I never considered looking on Long Island.” He hadn’t. And was getting desperate . . .

Now, Tess sighed. “I wish I could go with you tonight! Damn. Sounds like it’d be a good evening. I always have fun with you.”

“That’s what I’m here for, Tesstastic: a good time. Rain check. We’ll do it again,” Dane assured his younger sister. Only two years apart, they were more than siblings, they were truly friends, and he adored her. “Everything else okay with you?”

“Nothing new and earthshaking since yesterday morning,” she said with dry amusement.

“Get back to work, then, so you get home before midnight. And eat, Missy!”

“I will, I will! Stop nagging me. Go have a good time for both of us.”

“Not a problem,” Dane said assuredly. Tess chuckled. “Of course it isn’t. Who am I talking to? Wherever you go, you have a good time. It’s just a given. I think fun finds you.

“Yes, I do,” Dane agreed with a grin. “And yes, it does.”

By the time Dane strolled into the martini lounge, it was close to ten-thirty. It was a nice enough place; not as worn as some of the bars he’d gone to in the city, but not as upscale as some of the others he’d frequented. And to him, there was a distinctly different vibe in a Manhattan bar or club compared to a Long Island one—or anywhere else, really. New York City had a feel and energy all its own. Nothing and

nowhere matched it.

He’d grown up on Long Island, not far from where he was now. The second son of a multigenerational, multimillionaire family, Dane had been born and raised in one of the most affluent communities on the Gold Coast of the North Shore. He had led a charmed life, despite his family’s dramas, explosions, and scandals. When it was time to go to college, he got out of that mega-mansion of misery and went out of state. But neither his lively years as an undergrad at Duke nor his time at the Wharton School of Business could keep him from returning to New York by his midtwenties. He was a true New Yorker, it was in his blood. He loved living in the city, he loved the business he’d started and grown there, and he loved the vitality. He thrived on it. Long Island, though nice, just felt . . . muted. Smaller. Quieter. And that wasn’t for him. Dane was all about color and sound, living large, taking life for a ride.

He smirked as he remembered Tess joking that a good time always found him. It was true. He loved life, so it loved him back. He never dwelled on negative things. There was no reason to. He was an upbeat, satisfied man, living a charmed life, so he just went with the flow.

The bar was dimly lit as he found a small table for two in the middle of the room. The waitress he’d passed on the way in brought his drink to him as he sat down. He’d heard the last bars of a song as he’d entered the midsize room, but now it was all applause. The audience obviously liked the singer, or the song, a lot—plenty of the gigs he’d gone to recently didn’t get such an enthusiastic response. In fact, some of the patrons were too cool or sophisticated to acknowledge the entertainment, much less applaud like this audience was. This, to Dane, was a good sign. He sipped his dirty martini and glanced around to gauge the crowd before he looked at the singer.

But when he looked up and saw the woman onstage, everything just . . . shimmered. Maybe it was the air around her, maybe it was the woman herself, maybe there was something in his drink? Dane experienced something akin to when he’d done mushrooms back in college. The air seemed to actually twinkle and glow. It was the damnedest thing. Dane sat very still as he stared at her. Dark red hair that fell to her shoulders, big dark eyes, delicate pale skin, and an hourglass figure made for debauchery, encased in a navy blue sheath dress and matching stilettos. Beautiful and sultry, her presence was powerful, tangible. Time seemed to hang for a few seconds, spin out and slow . . . then everything was normal again as the singer spoke.

Review: Out of Plans by Stylo Fantome

Author: Stylo Fantome

Book: Out of Plans

tl;dr recommendation: OUT OF PLANS is romantic suspense on steroids. 5 stars!

Book Summary:

THE NEW PLAN:

* Find Marc
* DON’T find Marc
* Take down a Russian Bratva boss
* Don’t have sex with Kingsley
* Find Marc
* Take down a Colombian drug lord
* Don’t fall for Marc again
* DON’T FIND MARC
* Kill every ..
*
*
*SCREW THE PLAN AND JUST WING IT

This is the story of what happens when best laid plans fail, and a vengeful woman is forced to find her own way once again. A bond broken, trust shattered, and too many lies to keep track of find Marc and Lily all out of plans and running out of time. Can they find their way back to each other before trouble finds them first, or is it really the end of their journey?

Longer Review:

OUT OF PLANS is romantic suspense on steroids. Lily is a firecracker I’d love to have on my side. It was so motherfucking delightful to read about a sharp, bold, intelligent and brave woman who cared too much and sometimes not enough. She was the perfect blend of hard and soft and I LOVED HER. Marc does too, he’s just too goddamn stubborn to see it.

When they come back together, the claws come out once again (did you possibly think it could any other way?!). The addition of Kingsley into the mix had me laughing and grimacing for longer than I thought was possible in a book about fighting and bullets and death. This book had me hopped up and rearing to go in every possible way: the sexual tension is locked & loaded and Lily’s five year plan has never been forgotten.

Marc has softened, and his vulnerability is in the form of one green eyed, red haired, wildcat. If you thought that they fought hard in the last book – get ready. The difference here is that he has a lot to overcome. He’s lost any trust he had when he left her on an island. His biggest problem is his inability to see her as an equal, which is – crazily enough – Lily’s greatest desire. As they fight their way to love (both literally and figuratively), they hurdle over every obstacle standing in their way. They’re stubborn and tenacious and perfect for each other.

Stylo writes like I’ve never read before and I absolutely fell for it. Lock, stock & barrel. It’s complex but easy to follow, exciting but sweet. She mixes just enough personality into these otherwise hardened characters to make you want them to succeed and want them to live and want them to fall in love. These “bad people” are now MY bad people and I cheered for them.

If you want heat, fire, a kick ass leading lady and one hardened but vulnerable man, you NEED THIS SERIES. Way to go, Stylo. I’m all in when it comes to your books!

ACED review

Driven fans better buckle up – Bromberg delivers this missing piece hard & fast, making for a deliberately bumpy ride.

One thing was certain: my eyes were glued to the page, I ignored all life responsibilities while reading and I was engrossed & engaged in all things Colton & Rylee.

This sequel (can I call it that?) gives you all the little links and pieces you want without diluting your love for either character. I adored Colton’s ability to step up when needed and his desire to protect his family – a family he at one point thought he’d never have.

Colton is the dream book boyfriend we know and  love. I loved watching them struggle together and find their footing in their marriage. Let’s be honest – marriage isn’t easy, but it can be totally worth it. Bromberg challenges her characters with real life – and you’ll really love it.

If you’re a Driven fan you’re going to be nervous going into this, shit, I totally was. But I trusted Bromberg and she doesn’t disappoint. Keeping true to their identities, this book is NOT BORING. There’s a ton happening, but even the subplots don’t distract you from the theme of true love conquering all.

You get little snippets of the characters from the other books, but nothing that would ruin their stories – GAH. perfect. Well done, Bromberg! Aced pushes you over the finish line with flourish and leaves you with hope and an intense level of love. This sequel will hold you tight and make you smile. 5 stars!

Review: Best Laid Plans by Stylo Fantome

25596198

Author: Stylo Fantome

Book: Best Laid Plans

tl;dr recommendation: This book takes the concept of fighting for love to an entirely new level.

Book Summary:

THE PLAN:

* Smuggle diamonds from Liberia to Morocco
* Make the trip in three days
* Don’t get caught
* Don’t kill each other
* Don’t have sex with each other
* Don’t fall for each other
* Stick to the plan

This is the story of what happens when an unlikely bond is formed between enemies, causing tensions to rise, and igniting a chemistry that threatens to burn them both. Together, they’ll learn that sometimes even the best laid plans can fail.

If this NOVEL were a MOVIE, it would have an R rating from the MPAA. Contains: Violence, Grisly Images, Strong Language, Nudity, and Graphic Sexual Content

Longer Review:

This book takes the concept of fighting for love to an entirely new level. Fisticuffs for everyone! Marc and Lily are an unlikely couple as they find their way on the the run from the Russian mafia (amongst other people). Their attraction is strong and their will to live is even stronger – these two find themselves in harrowing battles with bullets flying and heads bashing – sometimes even at each other.

With diamonds on the line, they come together to help Lily formulate her plan for revenge while Marc works out his own plan for retribution. No one ever planned for them to fall for each other.

This book is intensely passionate and dangerously hot. I was feverishly reading from scene to scene and almost murdered Marc at the end of the book (I still might unless Lily does it for me first). Lily is the baddest chick you’ll ever meet. She can hold her own in any fight and has more bravado than some men I’ve read about. Fiercely loyal yet still ever too trusting, Lily constantly is trying to figure out who she is and what she’s meant to be. I’d do her.

I adored Marc’s fighting style and brute nature. He’s refreshingly honest and undeniably affected by Lily – even though he doesn’t want to be. Their story isn’t usual and this book is more Mr. and Mrs. Smith than a classic fairytale, but I loved the hard edges that made me gasp and hurt and squint and grimace.

I’m heading into book two with open eyes and a little anger burning in my chest. Let’s go get ’em, Lily.

Review: Love Struck by Laurelin McGee

Author: Laurelin McGee

Book: Love Struck (Miss Match #2)

tl;dr recommendation: Fresh, fun, witty and angsty, Love Struck will pluck at the chords of your heart. 5 stars!

Book Summary:

Welcome to a seductive world where two solo artists combine their talents-and their hearts-to make beautiful music together…

SHE’S GETTING INTO THE GROOVE
Lacy Dawson is a young singer-songwriter with a record deal, a studio gig, and a serious case of writer’s block. After looking for love songs in all the wrong places, she finds inspiration at an online support group called Song Writers Anonymous. Thanks to one mysterious member who motivates her and inspires her, Lacy’s career is back on track. But is she ready to meet her sexy musical muse…face to face?

HE MAKES HER HEART SKIP A BEAT
Eli is definitely interested in hooking up with Lacy, aka “LoveCoda.” But between writing her new album and his band’s success, they can’t find the time to face the music-or each other-about their burgeoning online romance. All that changes when Eli and Lucy get booked on tour together. In person, the attraction is all too real and explosive. They both should walk away, but once they are in each other’s arms, there is no turning back…

Longer Review:

*flails arms* I’m completely struck with how much I love this book! #seewhatididthere?! Fresh, fun, witty and angsty, Love Struck will pluck at the chords of your heart.

As an up-and-coming folk music singer, Lucy is desperately trying to get her feet back on the ground and the words back on the page after a terrible tragedy took away the man she was going to marry. She’s struggling for words – literally – which is a problem since she needs to write new songs for her next album. The only place she can find solace is in her online (and anonymous) best friend. Of course, when Lucy goes on tour with Eli’s band she realizes that one of them is her online paramour, misunderstandings are had and love sparks.

Eli and Lucy have this magnetism towards each other that made me love them each immediately. Coming from someone who has more online friends than real-life friends, I was instantly drawn to the story and I quickly fell in love. I turned these pages reading through my fingers for a bit – because GOD, the story had me right on the edge. It’s the kind of story that has you screaming at the characters because YOU KNOW the deal, but they don’t. It may make you want to throw the book across the room at times, but at others you’ll want to snuggle it close.

It’s also pretty funny. There are laugh-out-loud moments that had me snorting and shaking my head. I love Laurelin & Kayti’s writing. They know how to get me hot and bothered and how to put a smile on my face.

It’s genuine, real and emotionally charged; seamlessly written and hopelessly romantic. I don’t have to fake it – I absolutely loved it and want to scream it at the top of my lungs.

Review: Dirty Pleasures by Meghan March

Author: Meghan March

Book: Dirty Pleasures (Dirty Billionaire  Trilogy #2)

tl;dr recommendation: This is electrically charged and fantastically written. 5 stars!

Book Summary:

I did it. I married a billionaire.

My reasons are my own, but the last thing I expected was to feel owned.

I may have taken vows, but I’m still determined to be me.

Now his rules are taking over my world, but I’m not the kind of girl to just obey.

There’s only one problem: I might actually be falling for him…

I have no idea how this marriage is going to go, but holding onto a piece of myself while succumbing to his dirty pleasures is shaping up to be the ride of a lifetime.

Dirty Pleasures is the second book in The Dirty Billionaire Trilogy. Dirty Together, the conclusion of this filthy trilogy, will release on 1/12/2016.

Longer Review:

I am loving this filthy, kinky, dirty billionaire. My eyes are so starry and full of Crey (we’re friends like that now). This book could alternatively be titled The Transformation of Crey. Because really, that’s what this was. In book one, we were able to see the full assholery range of Creighton, but book 2 provides us with a new layer to the enigmatic mind and vast empire of King Asshole. In fact, he’s not really an asshole at all in this book.

If I loved him as a dickface, you can only imagine how I feel for him now that that his heart has opened and his eyes soften every time they glance in Holly’s direction. I am loving this series so hard – this installment opens us up into Crey’s mind (and his heart) and I wouldn’t change a thing.

As we expected, he hunts Holly down. We know that he’s not willing to give her up without a fight. These two could light fires with the heat that pours off them when they’re together. Holly’s on the road touring and Crey’s right there with her. He’s not perfect, but he’s really fucking trying. Of course, because their relationship started basically as a joke – a fling -it’s hard for Holly to believe that Crey has really changed.

She’s still the independent and fiesty girl that Crey met at the bar, but they both may need to meet in the middle to make this relationship thing work.

When the other shoe drops and insecurities flair, my feelings exploded. Of course, sure Meghan. Just leave me in a ball of uncertainty just as I was becoming so happy and content. I’ll be in the corner rocking myself until book 3 comes out. This is electrically charged and fantastically written. March inches her way into your heart and under your skin. 5 Stars.

Review:

You need to read this book so fucking hard. For a book that has a substantial amount of awesome sex in it, there were still scenes that brought tears to my eyes. And I don’t cry at books. Much. KL Kreig twists words into stories that take you away from your life and insert you into the pages.

I would have thought that a book about betrayal would have hardened my heart towards Livvy – I mean, what kind of woman leaves the man she just promised to marry without much more than a note? But facts have a way of being perverted into what you think you want to know and the truth is so much more – so much harder to hear – than you ever imagined.

Gray is the strong, badass, alpha man that never wants Livvy to leave his side again. Somehow he’s managed to forgive (or ignore) her omissions and her refusal to discuss the past as long as he has her. Of course, he’s terrified she’s going to leave him again. Terrified that what they’re building is so fragile that it could break at a moment’s notice.

Forsaking Gray has heart, sensuality, romance and grit that will hold you to your seat even when the scenes are so hot you might just slip off. The connection between Livvy and Gray is absolute and so goddamn complete that I was yearning for their future almost as much as they were.

Kreig’s writing is on point & strong – pulling you into the story and never letting you go until the very last page. I’m in awe of her magic. Besides, have you ever known me to turn down a book with a hot as fuck CEO, strong & brave woman, & a massive cock? NOPE.

I’m all in with Gray. Livvy gets there too 😉 LOVE. 5 stars.

Excerpt:

“Convince me you don’t love me, Livvy and I’ll walk. You can run and this time, I won’t try to find you. But if I don’t believe the bullshit you’re about to try to shove down my throat, fair warning, angel. I will be relentless in my pursuit of you. Last time was nothing compared to the lengths I will go to in order to make you mine again.”

I can’t think straight. There were so many things said in those few sentences that have my head reeling. But the unspoken words I heard are the most profound.

I can’t wrap my head around how I could have hurt him so deeply, but still earn his forgiveness. Is he playing a sadistic game with my damaged heart and my fragile trust? Is he trying to lure me into thinking he can possibly absolve me for an unforgivable wrong and then crush me under his boot, like I did him? Would I blame him if he tried?

Sadly, no.

I was unable to keep the question rolling around on my tongue from spilling out. “How can you still want me after what I did to you?”

He grabs my face between his strong hands. His eyes shine with pure, unadulterated love and my stomach goes into a free-fall. “I’ve never stopped. And I’m a fool’s fool, because, God help me, I never will.” His hungry, lust-filled eyes flit between mine and my lips, which I unconsciously wet. My breathing is out of control. “Tell me you don’t love me, Livvy,” he rasps. His control is razor thin. One wrong word and it will slice him in half, mutilating him beyond repair.

I shake my head. I should be pushing him away, not drawing him in. I should tell him to run as far and as fast as he can, but I can’t force myself to do it. My love for him is too powerful. My willpower too weak. “I can’t,” I sob. Fresh tears balance precariously on my eyelashes.

His lips crash to mine and I let them. He takes and I silently beg him with my body to take more. I know I’m making the biggest mistake of my life because I can’t keep Gray. No matter whether he can forgive me or not, I can’t forgive myself. He will never be mine again. So I’ll take this one stolen moment I’ve been granted and I will revel in it. I will lose myself in it. And I will store it away as my last blissful memory of him, erasing the painful ones from the past few years.

If he wants my body, I’ll freely give it. He already has my heart. He always has and he always will. But what I can’t give him is the last piece of my soul, and I’m barely holding onto it. It pleads with me to be released into his soul-sucking kiss. He’s trying to take it, but I need to keep that buried deep within me in order to survive the agonizingly lonely, bleak days ahead of me without him.

Because this is the last time I’ll step foot in HMT Enterprises. And this is the last time I can let myself see or feel or touch Gray Colloway.

I’m just a regular ol’ Midwest girl who likes Game of Thrones and am obsessed with Modern Family and The Goldbergs. I run, I eat, I run, I eat. It’s a vicous cycle. I love carbs, but there’s love-hate relationship with my ass and thighs. Mostly hate. I like a good cocktail (oh hell…who am I kidding? I love any cocktail). I’m a huge creature of habit, but I’ll tell you I’m flexible. I read every single day and if I don’t get a chance…watch the hell out. My iPad and me: BFFs. I’m direct and I make no apologies for it. I swear too much. I love alternative music and in my next life I want to be a bad-ass female rocker. I hate, hate, hate spiders, telemarketers, liver, acne, winter and loose hairs that fall down my shirt (don’t ask, it’s a thing).

I love both reading and writing stories that feature alpha males and strong, independent women who bring them to their knees. Literally to their knees. We all know women DO rule the world, after all. But shhh…let’s keep that secret just between us girls. 😉

Author: Maya Banks

Book: Mastered

tl;dr recommendation: there were bits I absolutely adored and then parts I could not stop rolling my eyes. Thus, this baby gets 3 stars.

Book Summary:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Breathless Trilogy comes the first novel in the Enforcers series—a bold new direction in erotic romance that explores the games men and women play, and the price they’re willing to pay for pleasure.

What he wants, he takes with no remorse or guilt.

She stood out in his club like a gem, unspoiled and untouched. A lamb among wolves, she clearly didn’t belong. Drawn to her innocence he watched as she was surrounded by men who saw what he did—but no one but him could touch her. He summoned her to his private quarters. He sensed her fear. He also recognized the desire in her eyes. And he knew she wouldn’t leave before he possessed her. She had no need to know his secrets. Not until he had her under his complete and utter control.

What he wants, she isn’t sure she can give him.

The moment he told her want he wanted, she couldn’t resist. Instinct told her to run, but her heart said stay and walk the fine line between pleasure and pain. Though she wasn’t sure she could ever completely surrender, the primal part of her wanted to try, even knowing this man could break her in ways she never imagined. Because once he possessed her, he owned her and it would be too late to turn back. She can only pray that he doesn’t destroy her in the end.

Longer Review:

Alright. Here goes. This book is a solid three for me – which means that it was fine but I didn’t love it. I wanted to love it. So fucking bad – but I didn’t start to actually really enjoy myself  until the last 15 pages, which is a little ridiculous being as how this book is over 350 pages.

The basic premise is this: Evangeline is dumped after hit-it-and-quit-it Eddie takes her virginity and calls her bad in bed. Her friends obtain a VIP pass to get her into Impulse, the hottest nightclub in town full of Beautiful People so that she can feel better about herself. She goes, feels immensely out of place because she declares that she is decidedly Not Beautiful and she has an altercation with Eddie. This incident makes Drake, the owner of Impulse (who has been watching her since her entry into the club), take action. He basically declares her his submissive at that moment and kidnaps her the next night after work.

I was infinitely more interested in all of Drake’s men, who were essentially on rotation so that we could meet all of them, than I was in Drake himself until the end of the book. He’s a contradiction and somewhat of a hypocrite. It drove me  mad. The man is overly possessive – borderline stalkery controlling – of Evangeline. I was able to forgive the kidnappy submissive thing, because Fiction.

But then his fantasy night threw me for a complete fucking loop. It was so out of the realm of things that I would have imagined he would allow and while I was reading I was actually doing one of those open mouth close mouth things where I was speechless and couldn’t decide why or how or what was happening.

Evangeline was a fine character. She gained a teensy bit of a spine at different places in the book and for that she earned some points. But she’s one of those heroines who does not think she’s pretty or beautiful or smart of any of those things. I was working on getting over that character flaw because she certainly has her pride and she’s basically the nicest and sweetest person on earth. She grew on me.

I think my biggest problem with the book was twofold: 1) the intense repetition of facts that we already knew – like, I know that Evangeline doesn’t think she’s pretty, I don’t need to be told every four seconds; and 2) the fact that nothing happened in the story until the last fifteen pages. I did not need forty pages (I’m guesstimating) on Evangeline’s skinned knee. I didn’t see how that pushed the story further. The Skinned Knee Incident could have happened and been over in like 5 pages. Seriously. This book needed major editing and I bet you books 1 and 2 could be condensed.

However, I did love when Drake and Evangeline had their sweet moments in bed and their intimate moments that built their relationship. I loved the connection they shared and the impending groveling that will occur in book 2. This was a hard read for me because there were bits I absolutely adored and then parts I could not stop rolling my eyes. The story had so much potential for me but I swear, this was not the Maya Banks read that I was expecting and hoping to love. Thus, this baby gets 3 stars, with intense hope that book 2 will give me more story.
