This series is a spinoff of the Broken Bonds serial which must be read prior to beginning this first book. Contains spoilers to the Broken Bonds serial.

Detective Ethan Quinn has questions. The Arlington Slasher case is closed, the UNSUB no longer a threat—but Quinn can’t quiet the suspicion he harbors toward his partner and the young, attractive M.E. Not only does he loathe his uncertainty, he’s torn between doing his job and protecting his team.

But burying himself in cases no longer works. He’s restless. On edge. And tired of fighting his compulsions. Quinn has always viewed the law in black and white. Only now his world is swirling with a murky gray that threatens to devour him.

When lead medical examiner Avery Johnson careens toward a dangerous path, she pulls the unwitting detective into a dark web of deception and lust, triggered by a spree of recent killings.

Is this new player linked to the Bathory murders, or is it another copycat?

Time almost took Avery from him once before. As the clock ticks, Quinn will stop at nothing to protect her, refusing to let Avery become a victim again. Against his uncompromising logic, Quinn can’t deny his feelings. Avery forces him to acknowledge his darker desires, tempting his control—which weakens with every second he spends with the feisty M.E. as they hunt down the perpetrator threatening to tear them apart.

Review:

Trisha blows me away EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Her plot twists are unlike anything I have ever read before – she has a completely crazy mind that I want to get lost in over and over. While yes, this is a second in a series, it can also be read as a standalone.

Ethan Quinn is a seriously hot detective. He knows that something deeper is going on with Avery – I mean, she was just abducted afterall. But he’s so used to seeing things in black and white, he’s starting to get concerned that he’s letting gray cloud is vision. When a potential new serial killer starts up again in Arlington, everything starts to get twisted quickly.

Avery is once again at the center of everything. She’s made some choices that thrust her right into the danger zone – exactly where she had just left. I freaking loved her though. Even though she’s been through a lot she’s strong, smart and completely awesome.

Trisha writes characters that have just enough dark to balance out the light – there’s seriously hot sex scenes, tons of secrets and the fast paced thrilling ride that you need. This cover is hot as hell and the story is well developed, smart and scorching. Get to know Trisha NOW.

 Excerpt

Avery

The windowless room is freezing. Florescent lights hum, echoing off the cinderblock walls and tingeing the too bright, barren room in a sickly green hue. As soon as I was ushered inside, the bag was removed from my head and my lab coat was taken.

The thin blouse I’m left with does nothing to shield me from the frigid air.

I rub my arms to generate heat, giving myself something to concentrate on besides counting the seconds. I’ve only been locked inside for minutes, but panic threatens to pull me under when I imagine it turning into days.

So very different than before, but somehow just as frightening. I’m not shackled. I’m not drugged. I don’t, logically, think these people have the same intentions as my abductor did when he took me…but I can’t say that for certain.

As soon as I think I’m going to lose it and start banging on the steel door, I hear a click, and the door grinds open against the floor.

The man entering is tall and thickly built. He wears a mask. A Jason mask like on the horror movie. And he’s carrying a semiautomatic gun. My stomach plunges, free-fall. I want the bag back over my head.

He jerks his head. “Move. It’s ready.”

What’s ready? But I can’t work up the courage to ask. This man is not manhandling me, and somehow my feet move me in that direction. I’ve just simply lost my mind. So many days spent fearing the world after I was released from the hospital, and what I dreaded could happen—that which I told myself over and over would never happen again—has, in fact, happened.

What else is there left to fear?

Death?

I’m almost relieved. Like I’m ready to welcome it. Like I can stop dreading it now.

The masked man stands in the doorway as I cross through. My eyes go wide when I see what’s on the other side of the room.

A lab.

But unlike any lab I’ve ever worked in. It’s dirty, and smells of death. Not like the death in the morgue, where I’m accustomed to being surrounded by bodies. But a grotesque, sour stench that soaks my pores.

Tables are full of beakers and test tubes. A giant syringe station is setup with thin blue hoses curling down into a large tub. My gaze follows the tubes’ path along the back wall to a large containment unit.

“Welcome, Dr. Johnson.”

I whirl around, trying to locate the source of the deep, gravely voice. Feedback pierces the air, and I look up to find a speaker in the corner.

The voice booms through the room again. “Go ahead. Get comfortable. There’s a coat on the hanger to your left, and goggles on the table.”

I shake my head. “What do you want from me?” I say to the room, hoping this unsettling PA system is two-way.

“It’s what we both want,” the voice responds. “I believe neither of us want any more dead girls littering up our beautiful streets. So you should get to work.”

I turn around and see the man with the gun standing watch at the only exit.

I face forward, lick my lips. “And if I can’t?”

The silence stretches out, endlessly taunting. I’m sure the decision to end my life has already been made. Then: “I really don’t think that’s an option for you, Miss Johnson.” A beat. “Best focus on the task at hand. You have one hour.”

Passion and lust ignite. Dark and light battle. This explosive first installment of the Broken Bonds series sets the exhilarating pace for a cat and mouse game where no one knows who’s really pulling the strings.

Criminal profiler Sadie Bonds knows blood. Her affair with the gruesome, dark world of killers began long before she started applying her analytical skills to investigate gory crime scenes. She gets inside the killers’ heads, breaks them down, relates to them on an arcane level. She prefers it this way—because it’s safer to ally herself with the villain than the victim. At least, that’s how she’s coped ever since she was abducted and tortured as a teen.

She will never be a victim again.

Now, she’s honed her skills in order to bring justice to these ritualistic offenders. Working alongside her colleagues, armed with sharp wit and a SIG, Sadie always catches her sadist. Until one ruthless serial killer gets inside Sadie’s head, turning the tables. He knows her secrets. Her obsessions. The darkest, most deviant part of her soul.

When she meets Colton Reed, dangerous stakes are raised as he threatens to unravel her control and reveal her darkest fantasies. The sexy-as-sin bondage rigger at an exclusive BDSM club pushes her boundaries, forcing her to acknowledge that side of herself she fears. Plunged into a realm of torture and suffering, pain and pleasure, Sadie balances on the razor-sharp edge of two intersecting worlds threatening to swallow her.

The UNSUB has made contact.

After a rapid string of grisly murders shakes the usually peaceful city of Arlington, Virginia, the sadistic killings of young women lull into a deceptive calm. Agent Sadie Bonds knows the terror isn’t over; serial killers don’t stop until caught.

And this sadist has targeted the profiler, revealing pieces of her dark past and weaving her secrets into each gruesome crime scene. Is the killer someone from Sadie’s past, her present? Or is he part of a fated future she brought on herself? The answer lies within the riddle of the copycat killings, ones mimicked after the infamous Blood Countess.

As tension brews in the department awaiting the UNSUB’s next move, Sadie’s more than on edge—her deviant cravings for the possible perpetrator have ratcheted out of control. She needs the feel of Colton’s ropes binding her, sheltering her from stark reality.

Only Colton Reed has his own twisted secrets that threaten to unravel not only Sadie as they come to light, but the UNSUB’s carefully constructed web now entangling both the profiler and her sexy bondage rigger.

Who is the UNSUB?

For Agent Sadie Bonds, finding the answer to that question means the difference between life and death for someone close to her. The UNSUB’s latest abduction reaches right into the heart of the ACPD, forcing every member of the department to search within their ranks for the sadistic perpetrator.

Suspicion not only clouds the task force; it slithers into Sadie and Colton’s bond, challenging their love. Discovering the truth means facing their past together. Sadie’s connection to Colton has quieted her inner demons—but is she strong enough to confront the real monster?

All players take their places as the stage is set for the final scene. With the UNSUB manipulating the game, even Sadie and Colton fall victim, spiraling deep into the darkness that threatens not only their lives, but their trust. As Sadie navigates a tortuous maze, Colton will do whatever is takes to protect her.

The truth will set you free. Only for Sadie, her truth will test the very fabric of her reality. She must silence the threat, or risk losing everything and everyone she loves.

Review: Too Hard to Handle by Julie Ann Walker

Author: Julie Ann Walker

Book: Too Hard to Handle (Black Knights Inc.)

tl;dr recommendation: If you’re looking for suspense with sex, you must read this. Now. It’s like an explicit James Patterson book. [Oh hi, heaven.]

Book Summary:

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julie Ann Walker continues her red-hot Black Knights Inc. series in rough-and-tumble Peru

“The Man” is back
Dan “The Man” Currington is back in fighting form with a mission that takes him four thousand miles south of BKI headquarters, high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. He’s hot on the trail of a rogue CIA agent selling classified government secrets to the highest bidder, when Penni DePaul arrives on the scene. Suddenly the stakes are higher, and keeping Penni safe becomes Dan’s number one priority.

And this time she’s ready
A lot has changed since former Secret Service Agent Penni DePaul last saw Dan. Now a civilian, she’s excited about what the future might hold. But before she can grab onto that future with both hands, she has to tie up some loose ends-namely, Dan Currington, the man she just can’t forget. And a secret that’s going to change both their lives-if they can stay alive, that is.

Longer Review:

4.5 stars!

Secret government operations twine with one sexy as hell relationship in this action packed story! I loved the fast-paced plot and slow burning romance, both of which held me to the pages and the edge of my seat. I can’t get enough of stories where the bullets fly just as much as the whispered words and slick kisses.

Dan is a super alpha male with a sweet and vulnerable side. Do I love them any other way? Nope. He’s trying to move on from the tragic loss of his wife and has never quite moved on. When he meets Penni in a previous mission and they share a earth shattering night together he can’t seem to shake her from his mind. Neither can Penni – which is why she hunts him down at the practical edge of the earth. Unfortunately, she walks right into a government op that has just taken off.

If you’re looking for suspense with sex, you must read this. Now. It’s like an explicit James Patterson book. [Oh hi, heaven.] Julie does this type of plotline better than most and I absolutely loved the twists and turns she served up. I received all of the heart thumping scenes I wanted and the HEA I needed. I was dangerously close *winks* to kissing my kindle when it was over.

TOO HARD TO HANDLE more than satisfied my craving for danger and sated my desire for uhhhh MORE. Great suspense, hot as hell sex and devious villains make this book any lover of romantic suspense will die over. Get it nowww.

Review: Conscience by Cecilia London

Author: Cecilia London

Book: Conscience (Bellator Saga #2)

Other books in series:

Dissident (Bellator Saga #1)

tl;dr recommendation: If you’re looking for fluff, go pet a dog – Conscience contains serious substance, intense emotion and a lot of violence. It’s also a romance – I SWEAR.

Book Summary:

An escape plan foiled….

A determined woman….

One last tiny sliver of hope….

Jack will find me.

The Fed wants answers. And Caroline is determined not to provide them. They pull out all the stops, testing her sanity, testing her strength, testing her humanity.

Jack will find me.

Subject to cruel and merciless treatment at the hands of a government she once trusted, Caroline clings to her sole lifeline, her only chance at maintaining her tenuous hold on reality: her memories of her husband, Jack, her children, Marguerite and Sophie, and the friends who mean the world to her.

Jack will find me.

But what happens when hope starts to fade? How long until her interrogators cross over into the unspeakable sadism she fears ? How long before she finally breaks apart?

Part Two of a Six Part Saga. Conscience (approximately 120,000 words) is not a standalone and must be read after the first book, Dissident (currently free for Kindle). All books in the series end in a cliffhanger. For readers 18+. This book contains adult situations including graphic violence, explicit (consensual) sex and light BDSM, psychological and physical trauma, and an oftentimes raw, dark, and gritty plot.

Longer Review:

Oh good lord, wow. This is not your typical romance novel. If you’re looking for fluff, go pet a dog – Conscience contains serious substance, intense emotion and a lot of violence. The second in the series, this installment is pretty raw…it rips your guts out and proudly places them on display after parading them around the room. If you thought that Dissident was gritty, you better hold on to your seat because things are about to get a whole lot bleaker before they get better.

I swear, this is also a romance. No really, it is!

Conscience messes with both your heart and your head: sucking you into a psychologically thrilling story full of government takeovers, violence, treasonous acts, and undying love. If you love series’ like Outlander, you’ll love this – without the thousand page per book commitment. Like Outlander, this series is also a genre mashup that is hard to define (even though I try to do it here) – regardless, just trust me when I tell you it’s in the genre of ‘Good Shit’.

When we pick back up with Conscience you’re re-inserted into an America whose government has gone rogue…and frankly is not as far fetched as one may wish it to be. Caroline’s been taken captive and while she’s pretty sure that whatever is coming next is going to physically hurt – she doesn’t fully grasp the emotional pain that she’s about to endure. Without getting spoilery, I’ll just say…uhhh, don’t get too attached to anyone. Ok? Ok.

While the present day scenes are pretty dark, emotionally charged, and painful – this book, like Dissident, is also told in flashback. For those of you who were dying for more information as to how America took a left into crazy-town, you get some of those answers here. You also get…dundunDUN….LOTS MORE SEX. eeeek! And coincidentally, we watch the development of Caroline’s relationship and marriage to Jack, which is endearing, sweet and swoontastic.

Jack. JACK. He’s one silver fox I’d like to trap and keep. mmmhmmm…Jack is sexy, dominant, and even better than I remembered. We learn that Jack is running for Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and I am totally in support of every misuse of his government office *winks*. Caroline joins him on the campaign trail and uhhh gives Jack plenty of personal attention while on the road. A bit more explicit than Dissident, we’re treated to a lot of sexy scenes that will make your heart race and your thighs slick. PHEW.

The banter between Caroline and Jack is funny, light and definitely needed to break up the heaviness of the plot. You can actually feel the love between these two. They have a real relationship that just also happens to be charged with sexual tension and full of witty dialogue.

Of course, every time you’re in a place where you feel warm and safe, Cecilia then tears your soul apart – bringing you back to the present to join Caroline in prison. Conscience isn’t a light read, but it is smart, witty and incredibly well written. There is definitely a cliffhanger – this a six part series afterall – but we’re left with a little bit of hope and sliver of light that will keep you hooked on this series. This isn’t just a great romance, it’s a great book. Five Stars!

Review: Edge of Midnight by Shannon McKenna

Author: Shannon McKenna

Book: Edge of Midnight

tl;dr recommendation: great suspense, good plot, mostly great character development, insanely steamy sex

Book Summary:

Sean McCloud must protect the woman he has never stopped loving: Liv Endicott. Years ago, Sean had to send Liv Endicott away to save her life. Now he has to keep her closer, very close–for the same reason . . .

THE BREAKING POINT
On the very day an arsonist burns down Liv’s bookstore in a small town in the Washington mountains, she finds fate has another shock in store for her. Amid the smoke, rubble and tears, Sean McCloud appears, calling her name. He’s every inch the man he always was–the man she kept on wanting. But wanting is not the same as trusting, and she doesn’t dare let him get too close. Yet a ruthless killer is gunning for Liv, and she’ll die unless they join forces to unearth a chilling truth–and come together in a blaze of searing passion . . .

Longer Review:

It’s like reading James Patterson with sex! This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I mean it was really hot, sometimes rough and hard sex. Clearly, that’s a win. However, it was a lot predictable and some of the characters grated on my nerves entirely and others just made me want to kick them occasionally.

Sean was actually a pretty great character. He left Olivia all of those years ago because he thought he was protecting her. He did it so that she would survive. However, when the wrong people see Olivia, she’s no longer safe. Of course, she never knew that she was in danger.

Sean has always loved Olivia and won’t let anything happen to her. When he returns to her life, he’s not planning to fall back in love with her, but he can’t help it. Olivia’s old feelings are sparked anew again too. Thus leading to the lots and LOTS of sex. I liked that Olivia gave him a hard time (no pun intended) and didn’t cave to anyone. She was strong and ferociously willing to fight for her freedom from the past that’s holding everyone back.

There’s a ton of danger, suspense & mystery to keep you on your toes and keep you entertained. I wish that the author would have tied up the one massive loose end. There wasn’t a cliffhanger, and each book is a standalone so now I have to check and see of there’s another book that answers my questions…and that bugs me.

SO. overall, great suspense, good plot, mostly great character development, insanely steamy sex. 3.5 stars.

tl;dr recommendation: Reading about Jamie had me close to buying my husband a kilt and begging him to learn gaelic.

Book Summary:

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Longer Review:

OH GOD I loved this book. It’s such an amazing epic romance at its heart that I hate myself for waiting this long to read it. Anyone who knows me knows that I have a predisposition against both historical novels and time travel novels – but this book breaks the mold. It’s something different…it’s timeless. Which is really no surprise since it was first published in 1991 and is still relevant.

Outlander easily broke through my preconceived notions, drug me through the dirty underbelly of the eighteenth century highlands and lifted me with hope that I never thought I’d have for characters I never knew I’d love. Diana writes with such ease that I’m shocked she didn’t have to transport back in time in order to convey this story so eloquently. While the overarching romance story held me fast to the pages, the story has something for everyone: danger, suspense, betrayal, and war. People have argued over what genre to place this book in, but that argument is wasted. I place this in the genre of ‘Good Shit’. period.

Claire is strong and sassy, witty and beguiling. She’s found herself in a shit position. While she knows that she should probably get back to her husband in her time, once she’s wed to Jamie and begins to build her life in this time, her heart and desires are divided. The question becomes, how much of her heart belongs to Jamie and how much to Frank – which future does she want to pursue? Of course, there’s also the issues of her maybe being an English spy and BlackJack Randall (who is her first husband’s ancestor) being a massive asshole, to the point that I’m not sure she could even see Frank’s face again without fearing he was BlackJack.

Jamie. Oh Jamie Fraser. Reading about Jamie had me close to buying my husband a kilt and begging him to learn gaelic. I’m going to share a few of my favorite lines – if this doesn’t entice you to buy the book, you clearly don’t love romance, I’m not sure why you’re reading this blog and you have no soul:

“If I were a horse, I’d let him ride me anywhere”           [Oh YES, PLEASE]

“I am your master…and you’re mine. Seems I canna possess your soul without losing my own.”

“I didna mean to hurt ye. But I do want to be in you, to stay in you, so deep. I want to leave the feel of me deep inside ye with my seed. I want to hold ye so and stay wi’ you ’til dawn, and leave you sleeping and go, with the shapes of you warm in my hands.”

“My heart has been yours since first I saw ye, and you’ve held my soul and body between your two hands here, and kept them safe.”

“I mean to hear ye groan like that again. And to moan and sob, even though you dinna wish to, for ye canna help it. I mean to make you sigh as though your heart would break, and scream with the wanting, and at last to cry out in my arms, and I shall know that I’ve served ye well.”

*SWOON*

Go fan yourself. Get your temperature back under control. Or wait – don’t. Go buy the book.

This book is a commitment. but one well worth taking. Especially for all seven inches of Jamie that swings with such easy access under that delicious kilt. *winks*

(it’s also only $2 for like 1000 pages. COME ON. That’s practically free).

I’m suffering from a ridiculous book hangover & I’m now planning my life around reading the rest of this series. This book gets a million stars. #MustRead

Review: Crossing The Line by Kierney Scott

Author: Kierney Scott

Book: Crossing the Line (The Firing Line #3)

Other Books in Series:

Blurring The Line (The Firing Line #1)
Holding The Line (The Firing Line #2)

tl;dr recommendation: This series is full of fire, passion and a search for justice

Book Summary:

Beth is still reeling from the murder of her beautiful sister Paige – a hit ordered by ‘El Escorpion’, the notorious cartel leader she has relentlessly pursued for the last six years in her role as DEA agent.

Reunited with her lover and undercover agent Torres, who is now her husband, and raising their adopted daughter Alejandra, she should be happier. But her role in Paige’s death eats away at her, as does her final fling with her old partner Patterson, which she has hidden from Torres …

So when truths are exposed, Beth and Torres’ fierce passion turns into an embittered battle. Beth’s only desire now is to track down El Escorpion once and for all. But will her search for justice cost her everything?

Longer Review:

If you want angst, this gives you angst. Like, an entire book full of angst. I was right at the edge of telling Beth to go fuck herself, but I was thankfully pulled back in. Probably by Torres. because he’s the most sane person in this series.

This is the third in the trilogy and it most definitely packs a punch. You need to read the first two in order to understand this one. Promise. We pick back up with Beth and Torres married, Paige dead, and El Escorpian still on the loose. This book centers around Beth’s problems…the biggest one being that she is terrified of happiness. Instead, she keeps secrets and compartmentalizes her life – focusing only on one goal: get the leader of El Escorpion. She’s under the false impression that if she gets him it will bring her justice for her sister and ease all of the guilt that she hides and refuses to talk about. Sorry honey, not going to work. #justsayin. Of course, Torres is keeping a secret of his own…

Truth: Beth made me angry. Really angry. She says and does some things that I don’t know if I would forgive if I were Torres. But somehow, that beautiful, scary-looking, amazing man is there for her – even when she’s completely despicable. Her tactics are meant to push away anything that could be good in her life because she doesn’t feel that she deserves it, I get that. But man did I disagree with her actions. ANGST, MY FRIENDS, ANGST.

As the danger increases, so did the grip on my kindle. This conclusion kept me reading even when I was close to throwing it across the room. However, even as the truth dripped out and hatred spun from their mouths, I could still feel the love between them. Their love is deep and all-consuming – it’s a lifetime kind of love that forgives the unforgivable. This series is full of fire, passion and a search for justice. Don’t worry, the ending satisfies you in the same way that Torres satisfies Beth, leaving you sated, happy and exhausted. 4 stars!

Review Tour: Surrender by Karyn Lawrence

Author: Karyn Lawrence

Book: Surrender (The Command #1)

tl;dr recommendation: This book has plot for days and characters with secrets and passion you fall in love with. 4.5 stars!

Book Summary:

The most dangerous thing on Captain Olivia Wallace’s plane is her Italian employer’s new bodyguard. Nathan is just like all the other predators in the deep brush of South Africa: he’s powerfully intense, strikingly gorgeous, and completely lethal.

But Nathan isn’t who he pretends to be and she’s drawn to the decent man she sees inside, the one he claims doesn’t exist. Even as he risks everything he has to save her.

His actions put them on a collision-course with uncontrolled passion, but also dangerous violence, and its impact threatens to destroy so much more than just their lives.

Longer Review:

Holy hotness, people. This romantic suspense story will hold you captive. Oliva is one bad-ass chick who I would love to have on my side. She’s not exactly sure what to do with the attractive and intense new bodyguard/translator, Nathan, who her bosses have added to her flight list. Olivia’s a personal pilot to some unsavory characters. She’s not interested in their illegal activities, she’s interested in the legal money she is making in her position.

But she can’t fight her attraction to Nathan – even though she doesn’t do relationships. She has, pun intended, too much baggage. And, well, he’s shit at fighting it, too. Nathan’s a CIA operative, working undercover to attempt to dismantle a terrorist group. Olivia is a distraction – an incredibly beautiful, enticing distraction. One that he’s never had before in any other mission.

When they give in to their desires, it’s clear that they’re going to want so much more. I was loving their relationship. It’s not based on a lot of internal drama between them – which is great, because there’s a shit ton of drama that’s surrounding them. Olivia is so very stubborn, but Nathan can see below her mask and he’s determined to find a way to lift it completely.

I loved this story line & the characters. The sex is also fantastic. They were meant to fit together in every.single.way. There are a lot of sweet and romantic moments that made me giddy and smile. These characters are great together.

Danger, suspense, a CIA operation complicated by a an attraction so intense your skin will burn. This book has plot for days and characters with secrets and passion you fall in love with. 4.5 stars!

So, I hate cheating books. I also dislike books that don’t give me an HEA or HFN. But somehow, I liked this one. It makes sense, because it’s T. A. Foster – she writes a fantastic novel. This is a little different than the last ones I’ve read, though 😉

First of all, it’s not a traditional romance. It’s a romantic thriller. While there’s a satisfying ending, it’s not the happily ever after that you’re used to or expecting. I WAS SHOCKED. Floored. Thrown for a loop. This book kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time. I could feel my anxiety creep higher when the affair began. But I loved her with Pax – even though I loved her with Spence, too. Or at least, who she thought she was with Spence.

When the drama cranked up higher, I almost dropped my kindle. Un-fucking-believable. I wasn’t expecting the twists and turns that started to come at me and I felt like I was dodging blows with each page. I was hooked. Audrey was in over her head from the beginning. I wish she saw the signs sooner, because I sure as fuck did. THIS BOOK MADE ME SO ANGSTY.

The sex is steamy and the stakes are high. You’ve been asking for something different? This is that something…and it will take you on a ride.

“Is it important to you that I like you?” I didn’t mean to be blunt.

“Yes.” His arm brushed mine again, but this time I wasn’t sure it was an accident.

“I’m just one little vote. You probably have the rest of the neighborhood in the bag. The book club was impressed with you.”

I thought he might be digesting my statement. “Every vote counts. Every person matters. You matter.”

We turned at the corner. I could see my driveway ahead. “You sound like an idealist.”

The center of my chest warmed when I heard the sound of his laugh. I wasn’t supposed to feel that when I heard another man laugh. I wasn’t supposed to react at all.

“I’ve been accused of worse. How about an idealist who wants his ideals to become reality?” He ventured a compromise.

I wondered if he and Sarah had conversations like these. Did he try to change her stance on issues? Did he woo her to his side of the fence with charismatic comebacks?

“Audrey?”

“Yeah. Sounds good.”

“I think I lost you for a second.”

“Sorry, I was just thinking.”

“I aimed too high with gun control, didn’t I? It’s an intense issue.” His expression changed.

“It’s not that.” I couldn’t explain what was happening. I should be able to have a mature conversation with my neighbor. We should be able to stroll on the sidewalk. I should be able to be next to him without thinking about his lips. Lips that smiled like a movie star. Something was changing and I couldn’t stop it.

There was enough light filtering through the crepe myrtles that I could see the muscles tensing in his neck. Had I said something wrong?

The flowerbed that marked the entrance to Paxton’s driveway was a few paces from where we stood. I quickened my step.

“I like talking to you. It’s nice to be able to talk without worrying about the consequences.”

My eyes flashed to his. But there were consequences. Things were happening inside me. My skin was flushed, my nerves vibrating, my pulse thumping hard against the inside of my head. He couldn’t see any of it, but I wasn’t certain he didn’t feel it.

I took a step, forgetting about the lumpy spot in front of his driveway, and almost landed on my face. Paxton gripped my arm, pulling me upward, saving me from landing facedown.

“Whoa there. You ok?”

“God, I’m sorry.” I shook off his hold. “I’m fine. I wasn’t watching where I was going. Stupid roots everywhere.” I noticed the way my arm ached from his grip. It was warm and pulsing. “Good night. Thanks for walking me home.” I wanted to run, speed past him. Run straight out of my skin.

“But, it’s dark. Let me at least drop you off at your door,” he suggested. “I wouldn’t want you to get hurt.”

I hesitated. There was a part of me hoping he would offer.

“All right. We can cut through your yard. There’s a short cut.”

“Show me.”

I followed Paxton along the driveway, noticing the lights in my house were off. This was late even for Spencer. Maybe he had gone to bed.

We passed the front porch, and I pointed to the path I used earlier that day. I could feel him behind me, taking each step I took. I grabbed one of the stiff magnolia branches and forced it to the side when I felt his hand land on top of mine.

I stopped, frozen with dread, consumed with something I hadn’t felt in years. I held onto the branch, and Paxton held onto my hand, the warmth of his palm starting to heat my skin.

His breath was heavy on my neck. It felt like waves pounding against me, each one eroding the barrier between us. I was afraid to turn around, afraid that if I looked at him I would unravel. As long as I stared at the branch, I was still in control. I couldn’t speak.

With his free hand, he pushed the hair off my neck and blew across the collar of my shirt. My knees wobbled and I gripped tighter on the branch, forcing it to keep me upright.

It was involuntary, but my head reeled back. He stepped closer. I didn’t know who I was. Hiding in the shadows while a man I barely knew touched me, like a woman who was available. A woman who was free to make choices about who touched her. I wasn’t that woman. My life was tied to Spence. Those choices weren’t mine to make, but I was making one. His was breathing freedom across my skin I didn’t know I craved.

His hand canvassed my neck, taking my throat in his palm. He ran a finger down the center, pressing lightly as he crossed my collarbone. I didn’t think I could stand there much longer as his fingertips explored my skin. The cicadas echoing around our yards drowned out the sound of my heavy breath.

I needed to stop this. But I craved it more.

I couldn’t open my eyes when he turned me toward him. If I kept them closed, it was as if I were dreaming. This was all a wine-induced dream. I could tell myself it wasn’t happening. Standing under the branches with a man only hours ago I didn’t know, but was unquestionably drawn to. Pulled in by his voice, the look in his eye, the energy around him. How he managed to be rugged, yet refined. But I knew when his mouth took mine that it was real. I could taste the wine on his tongue and the roughness of his palms as he held my face. I savored the newness of him—our lips moving wildly.

I clutched at his back. The kiss grew hungrier, our moans turning to whimpers as we snatched at the clothes between us. His teeth grazed across my throat, nipping at the soft spots tenderly then cutting in just enough to tease me.

I tensed when I felt his hand slide along my stomach and push my bra out of the way. It was too much. I tried to break away and Paxton hung his head.

“God, I’m sorry,” he whispered.

I shook my head, feeling sick. “We can’t do this. I-I didn’t want you to kiss me. You weren’t supposed to kiss me.” My fists balled at my side.

“I know. I know. It was out of line. I got carried away.” He ran his fingers through his perfect haircut. “I’m sorry. That was idiotic.”
