Review: quintessence. by Sarah Buhl

Author: Sarah Buhl

Book: quintessence.

tl;dr recommendation: This book entered my veins and made me feel.

Book Blurb:

Think about a time in your life when everything was perfect, and it felt as though nothing could go wrong. Life fell into planned alignment. All of the ideas and hopes held most important organized as books on a shelf. Each book held a title bearing a phase in life and within its pages laid the plan for the future.

Now imagine life throwing something at that shelf—everything planned, everything hoped for, everything organized, now turning over as the shelf falls to the floor.

Fear of the unknown replaces the hope for a perfect future.

Karl Samson is not a stranger to roadblocks and disruptions in life. Having for a time let them consume his thoughts, he now lives life learning from his trials. He is the guy everyone thinks is a little off, even though his friends love him for it. He is the one helping others. He didn’t set out one day to find love—he was doing what he usually did.

Maggie Presley achieves, and that is what she is known for—her determination to move ahead. Then, she is faced with something even the most meticulous planner could not foresee. Maggie believed she knew what life held for her because she could create her future. However, life had other plans, and she learns that even the worst of circumstances have unexpected outcomes after you are reminded of life’s beauty. This is a story of life and how sometimes it takes a reorganization of shelves to find the future. It’s a story of love found even during the darkest points in life.

Longer Review:

This is going to be a bit more serious than my normal sarcastic review, but that’s because this book IS serious. It’s also seriously great.

While reading this my feelings slammed around my chest causing this incredible sense of peace combined with the worst sense of ache. Talk about an all consuming love. I could feel the love: it’s innocence, how it transcended all other things and how it wrapped it’s hands around Karl and Maggie to push them together. Their love was beautiful, heartbreaking and so fucking pure. Not in the virgin kind of way, but in the clean and whole kind of way.

This is a story about two people who are suffering but who choose not to suffer. That’s sort of awesome, right? I mean, these people have some seriously heavy shit hanging around them but refuse to get pulled into the depths of it. Instead, they choose to look around them and be thankful. They choose to fall in love. They choose each other.

This isn’t one of those she leaves him or he leaves her books because one of them said something stupid and then they go for weeks angry based on some stupid misunderstanding. No. You feel the love building for these two in this amazing way into a crescendo. There’s not a pinnacle dramatic moment, it’s a lot of little dramatic moments.

You should know that if you can’t handle reading about the realities of what veterans go through, then don’t read this book. [gets on soapbox] But you should. You really fucking should. [gets off soapbox]. Karl’s a veteran and he’s trying to figure out how to coincide the person he once was with the person he now is. This is raw. This is real. This is truth. This book gives some of the best insight into the inner workings of a veteran’s mind than I ever could. I know this because I could see my husband in Karl. In every heartbreaking, beautiful word.

Karl’s journey intertwines with Maggie’s as if they were presented to each other at the perfect time in their lives. They soon discover that they simply work better together. Some may think that this book is too much in that it talks about feelings a whole fucking lot. But I don’t think we see this type of love enough. I love a book about a quick fuck as much as the next girl, but this book entered my veins and made me feel.

Karl is steadfast and amazing while Maggie is determined and strong. They balance each other when they need balancing and they hold each other when they need holding. It’s good. It’s so so fucking good. There’s not a ton of sex, but there’s more love than you can imagine. Some of the writing felt a little stilted to me, but on the whole I succumbed to All The Feels while reading this, which is why it gets 4.75 stars. This book is gorgeous.

Review: Where Sea Meets Sky by Karina Halle

Author: Karina Halle

Book: Where Sea Meets Sky – coming soon on March 31, 2015!!

tl;dr recommendation: This sharp, intelligent coming of age love story barreled its way into my soul.

Book Summary:

Joshua Miles has spent his early twenties spinning his wheels. Working dead-end jobs and living at home has left him exhausted and uninspired, with little energy to pursue his passion for graphic art. Until he meets Gemma Henare, a vivacious out-of-towner from New Zealand. What begins as a one-night stand soon becomes a turning point for Josh. He can’t get Gemma out of his head, even after she has left for home, and finds himself throwing caution to the wind for the first time in his life.

It’s not long before Josh is headed to New Zealand with only a backpack, some cash, and Gemma’s name to go on. But when he finally tracks her down, he finds his adventure is only just beginning. Equally infatuated, Gemma leads him on a whirlwind tour across the beautiful country, opening Josh up to life, lust, love, and all the messy heartache in between. Because, when love drags you somewhere, it might never let go even when you know you have to say goodbye.

Longer Review:

I now have a serious case of wanderlust. THANKS KARINA. If I wasn’t already pining for a change in career (I’m entirely serious. It’s happening as soon as I can make it happen) this book would have been enough to have me question every single decision I’ve made in my life. I mean, shit, it’s still making me do that and I’ve already walked down that path very recently. There’s something so refreshing about a book that tells you, no bullshit, HEY! FOLLOW YOUR PASSION! don’t be ashamed of it, let it flow through you, and let it devour you in a way that will fulfill you. It’s so good.

Gemma is a sweetheart/ part-time-bitch who doesn’t know what the fuck she’s doing with her life. She’s a nice girl, really, but she has an ache that she can’t fill and she’s searching for something that will make her whole. When the one night stand with Josh turns into a road-trip through the New Zealand countryside, Gemma and Josh find themselves both finding something that they weren’t originally looking for. Things start to get messy…Gemma can’t quite let things progress further…and they both find out what happens when everything falls apart….

I honestly wasn’t so sure about this story when I started. I hate love triangles and when Nick the Dick appeared I started to internally cringe. BUT. I continued on, and I’m really glad I did. This isn’t a typical love triangle story – there’s no cheating (thank mother of fuck) – and there isn’t any crazy over the top jealousy (well, at least not from Josh). So, all in all, I survived that portion of the story in one piece. PHEW. Also, Amber is perhaps one of the best sub-characters I’ve every read. She said ‘fuck’ in some of her first few sentences in the book and I was like ‘welp, we’re friends now.’

The traveling, beauty and funny predicaments had me dying to find my own Mr. Orange and take a road trip through the mountains. This story makes me want to max out my credit cards, explore nature and find that carefree place inside of me. Can it be spring now? Because I have a serious sudden urge to go camping.

I also wouldn’t mind taking Josh with me. Especially if he plans to fuck me against a tree – because THAT WAS HOT. I absolutely loved his dirty talking and cock-sure attitude. It suited him quite well…as did those tattoos. I’m a sucker for tattoos, so that was part of his allure, but there was more to it than that. He’s genuinely a good guy and I wanted him to knock down Gemma’s walls with every page.

I loved the themes running through this story – and even though I somewhat predicted the ending, I loved that too. Heartwarming & uplifting, this is a love story that will break your heart and mend it back together. LOVE.

tl;dr recommendation: Hilarious, sexy & endearing – five stars!

Book Summary:

I, Thomas Clifford Donnely, am a manwhore.

I’ve been told I’m irresistible to women. Like catnip for a different type of pussy-cat. I guess you could call me a Tom Cat.

This is the story about how I lost my wingman, broke all my own rules, and found myself falling in love.

Tom Donnelly isn’t the marrying kind, or the dating kind. Even after losing his #1 wingman to love, he doesn’t see the point in relationships. When his sister’s best friend returns to Whidbey Island and propositions Donnelly for a one-night stand, he breaks one of his biggest rules—no fooling around with his sisters’ friends. It’s just sex, nothing more. That’s what Tom does and does well.

What happens when “just sex” isn’t enough?

Hailey King is more than a match for Tom’s flirtations. She’s known him most of her life and has heard the rumors about his “skills” for years. When her perfectly planned future falls apart, will the last man she should ever fall for turn out to be more than a one-night stand?

Longer Review:

This book made me laugh out loud! With his wit, charm & dimples, I immediately fell in love with Tom (like every other woman out there). Simply put, Tom is a player. He’s not looking for a long commitment and he makes that fact very clear to every woman he sleeps with. He’s a one night stand kind of guy, or a few times more if you can handle a no strings attached kind of fuck. He lives on a fairly small island and I’m a little surprised that he hasn’t slept his way completely through it yet…

But then he meets Hailey – or shall I say, he re-meets Hailey, his sister’s best friend who just moved back home. Not only is Hailey off limits because he’s his sister’s best friend, but she’s also engaged, and that’s one line that Tom won’t cross. But when Hailey breaks off the engagement and literally throws herself at Tom, he’s not a man to deny a woman in need….The sex between then is so explosive that it starts to break open the walls that Tom has built around his heart. Even though he’s trying to keep things casual, his heart has other plans.

tom cat teaser 1.6

Hailey’s not a pushover by any stretch of the imagination. She can handle the boys – and Tom. She’s strong, independent and sarcastic. Basically, she’s awesome. She doesn’t fall apart when things get hard and you quickly realize that if any woman is going to tame Tom, it’s Hailey. While Tom keeps feelings out of the equation with his relationships, he certainly isn’t cold. His love for his family is undeniable and I loved seeing his softer side as he deals with family drama.

I absolutely loved this book. The writing is great and I was easily swept away in this story. I mean, Tom named his boat The Master Baiter, WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE?! If you need a fun, funny, endearing read, then you must pick this one up immediately!

About WITHIN THESE WALLS:

Within these walls, he became my solace, my sanctuary and my strength.

I am not strong. I am just a survivor of circumstance.

Isn’t that what we all do? Survive?

Each of us has our own set of circumstances to muddle through. Mine are just more…complicated.

Born with a severe heart defect, I’ve seen the inside of a hospital room more than my own bedroom.

I was drowning, a prisoner to the illness that owned me, until he appeared. He thinks he’s blocked out the world with his tattoos and hard exterior, but I see the real Jude, the one he so desperately wants to forget.

But is he the answer to my prayers or will he break my already damaged heart forever?

My name is Lailah Buchanan, and this is our story of hope, redemption and sacrificing it all for the one you love.

Excerpt:

With one pudding cup snug in my pocket, I was the epitome of stealth.

I slipped through the door quietly, ignoring the fact that I looked like a creepy stalker, and I stepped into the darkened room like I had a purpose.

I did work here, so there could be a dozen reasons for me entering a patient’s room.

Delivering a fudge snack pack was probably not one of them.

Like the many times before, I tried not to linger as I entered the room, but with each passing visit, it became more and more difficult.

The first night I’d decided to do this, I’d quickly done this drop-and-dash routine. I had gone in and out without a second glance.

But then, I’d met her. I’d come to her room and found myself face-to-face with the girl behind my late-night pudding runs. She was shy and timid, her gestures clumsy and unpracticed. She was so different from the polished and sophisticated girls I’d grown up with. Even her name was awkward. It sounded like the classic Eric Clapton song “Layla,” but hers was spelled all wrong.

She had made me curious. I’d suddenly wanted to know what else in this world would make her smile.

tl;dr recommendation: Hi, let me introduce you to your newest serial novella addiction. You’ll thank me.

Book Summary:

Grayson Ford and Emma Kinglsey–close since they were kids, opposites in every way. He’s the stuff high school crushes are made of, Mister Popular, and captain of every team. She’s artsy, cute, and not in his league, though fully aware of Summerland’s I Dream of  Dating Grayson Ford support group.

I can’t say no. The girl’s had my heart since before I knew it went missing.

He hides a life of hell. His father hates him, his mother’s gone. Emma is his only savior, yet she doesn’t know her power over him. She’s the only girl he wants, the only one he could ever tell–though he won’t.

I’m stronger, bigger, more of a man than he’ll ever be, but because I ruined his life, I’ve taken his crap, his attacks, the vulgar nature of his existence.

Until she discovers Gray’s embarrassment, his humiliation. Emma fights for him, for a chance. Theirs is a Cinderella story that she believes impossible. But as the layers peel back, it’s just a guy who needs a girl in order to keep breathing.

My mind is already doodling Mrs. Grayson Ford in imaginary notebooks. He has no clue where my head is at… But, given that I didn’t see what just happened coming, maybe I have no clue where his head is at either.

EXCERPT

“What are we doing?”
His side touches my side. “I’m memorizing what takes me away. What saves me.”
“You’ve—” My whispering voice cracks, but I don’t care how I sound. I’m toeing the cusp of all I ever wanted.
“We’re done ignoring us.” His hand cups my face, fingers stroking my cheeks down to my chin. When my lips part, his eyes drop to my mouth, focusing on my lips.
I’ve been kissed. Dates. Dares. However they’ve happened, I’ve had a few solid moments of PG-rated hookups. *Nothing* I have *ever* experienced has *anything* on this moment, and Gray’s lips haven’t even touched mine.

REVIEW

This novella is fantastic but it definitely leaves you with a MASSIVE CLIFFHANGER. I’m dying to know what’s next. I’m screaming at Emma not to do what I think she’s going to do, I’m holding out hope that the truth will come out about Grayson. I love these two so much & we’ve only just been introduced. Oh, I’m definitely addicted.

Emma and Grayson’s love story starts out so innocently. Best friends for their entire life, they each secretly harbored feelings for the other, until the day that Grayson decides that he just can’t keep pretending. He fantasizes about Emma in such a pure way that my heart was literally squeezing as he talks about her. He holds her up to such a high standard that he believes himself to be unworthy. Whereas Emma can’t believe that Grayson would ever be interested in her – the best friend. The artsy, outdoorsy, non-cheerleadery, friend. Emma has a little fire in her and is definitely stronger than she appears.

As they come together, you will not be able to stop the feels. This story is explosive, real, heartwarming and pretty freaking hot. I’m already itching for the next in the series & when it arrives I’ll be parking my tissue box next to me…

Hoping your day is filled with family, friends, and book boyfriends!

Warning, sentiment ahead:

I’m just a baby blogger so I wasn’t expecting much when I started this blog. However, I am so thankful for the support and kindness I’ve found in this community. The authors, book bloggers and readers I’ve interacted with have been nothing but awesome. I really started this blog because I needed an outlet away from my crazy, overly serious real life job, but I’ve already gotten way more out of this than I ever expected. You all are my sanity! SO THANK YOU!

Here’s to a strong finish to 2014! (and let the countdown to 2015 releases really begin!)
