Review: Hell or High Water by Julie Ann Walker

Author: Julie Ann Walker

Book: Hell or High Water (Deep Six #1)

tl;dr recommendation:  a great romantic suspense that will thrill until you’re drowning in pleasure

Book Summary:

Six men. One sunken Spanish galleon. Millions in gold and silver coins lying on the ocean floor. And a past that refuses to let the guys of Deep Six Salvage forget the Navy SEAL motto: the only easy day was yesterday…

There’s more than one kind of treasure…

The nation’s security has always been CIA agent Olivia Mortier’s top priority. But a mission-gone-wrong has begun to make her wonder if there’s more to life than risking hers.

And more than one secret at the bottom of the sea…

Only two things could make Leo Anderson abandon his hunt for the legendary lost ship, La Santa Christina, and return to the world of weapons and warfare he swore to leave behind: a capsule of enriched uranium, lost on the ocean floor, and a plea for assistance from the one woman he can’t seem to forget…

Longer Review:

**3.75 stars**

Those hot former SEALs know exactly how to make a girl wet. Leo’s skills at holding his breath only rival his adept hands…and mouth….mmmmm….

A high paced, dangerous mission constantly interrupts Leo and Olivia as they keep trying to fall in love. It also gets in the way of their attempts to fuck. Poor people…so sexual frustrated, but Christ, it’s hot. Leo & Olivia have a history…that ended after their mission eighteen months ago. A mission during which Leo lost one of his men, which resulted in a choice to retire from the Navy.

Leo’s plan now is to start a salvage company with his team – who also are all now civilians. He wants to search for the missing treasure that went down with the vessel carrying it back in the 1600s. A little dreaming never hurt anyone, right? But he’s convinced he can find it…with the help of his team. But then Olivia happens. She crashes back into his life and presents him with the opportunity for one last mission – a mission that will help finance his salvage company.

There are a ton (and I mean A FUCKING LOT) of colloquialisms, puns, and phrases in this book. Some of them hit, and some of them really missed. Like, the Bambi reference I could have done without. But there were others that were pretty funny and I was amused. I can totally see how that would grate on someone’s nerves, but after awhile I learned to expect it.

The switching POVs weren’t as jarring as I initially thought when I first started – you get more than just Olivia or Leo’s perspective for this one, and I came to enjoy it. It was done well and once I knew that I was going to be inside more than one person’s head, I was totally fine.

NOW BACK TO THE STORY. I was seriously itching for Leo & Olivia to get.it.on. Like, ASAP. But there was a substantial amount of cliterferance in the form of drama. Btw, that is an utterly fantastic word that I want to use daily. Thanks, Julie. The suspense is really high, the dangerous hits just keep coming, and the love between Olivia and Leo grows. The ending was extremely satisfying and gave me exactly what I wanted. Overall, a great romantic suspense that will thrill until you’re drowning in pleasure.

Excerpt:

The door flies open, slamming against the inside wall, and momentarily startling me. “What now!”

At first, I’m caught off guard by her irate greeting, but as she stands frozen in the doorway, her eyes grow wide in surprise, and a blush shadows her ivory face.

Damn. She’s beautiful.

I have to bite my lip to stifle a grin.

“I’m sorry. I thought you were somebody else.” Her tongue darts out and licks nervously at her lips. An intense desire to capture it between my teeth and slide it between my own lips spikes through me.

Leaning casually against her doorframe, I cross my arms over my chest. “I heard something crash. Is everything okay?”

Her shoulders drop slightly, and her hard eyes soften, meeting mine. “Yeah, everything’s fine. A friend made me angry, and I threw a vase at the wall.”

This time I can’t hide my amusement. “You either have a very short fuse or an asshole for a friend.”

The tension slips further from her shoulders, and she smiles at my remark. “It’s the latter.”

Shit, so maybe model dude is her boyfriend. What am I doing here? I don’t have time in my life for shit like this, but I also can’t seem to make my feet walk away.

“Well, I can promise I’m not an asshole, and I’m not doing anything tonight. Do you want to grab a drink?” She looks down at her watch and bites her bottom lip in contemplation, her hesitancy making me uneasy.

“Come on, Green Eyes, it’s only nine o’clock.” Pathetic, I’m begging a girl I should be running from to have a drink with me.

Those eyes instantly meet mine and are filled with a sudden shine that wasn’t there a minute ago.

“Do you want to come in and watch American Ninja Warrior with me?” The request comes so quickly I almost miss it. In fact, the only part I understood was that she wants me to come inside her place. Hell yeah, I’m coming inside. But first, I need to know what we’re doing because at this moment, what my dick hears is ‘coming inside’ and it has its own idea as to what that means.

Suddenly she’s laughing, and it’s awesome. Her entire face brightens, and her eyes twinkle like I’ve never seen. Her happiness is settling in my chest and making me grin at her like a damn schoolboy.

“You have no idea what I’m talking about do you?” Her laughter subsides and leaves her with a smile that is . . . stunning.

“No clue. Only that you asked me in, and yet, I’m still standing in your doorway.”

Blurb

I’d like to tell you that I’m ok.

That the meaningless sex with countless women has somehow numbed the pain. That it’s deciphered the constant confusion in my head. Eased the self-hatred that sinks into my gut every time I look in the mirror.

I’d like to tell you that time heals all wounds.

That we evolve and grow into well-adjusted, stable adults, set on a path to right the world’s wrongs. That we are not our past…we are not our pain.

I want to tell you all those things. Hell, I want to believe all those things. But I’d be lying. I’m good at that. Living a lie is the only way I truly know how to survive.

But the day I saw her, I stopped surviving. I stopped existing. And for the first time in 24 years, I started living.

She brought me back to life. Set me free and sent my soul soaring. Made this useless shell of a man feel like…something. Something whole and real and good.

She saved me.

Although she believes I wasn’t even worth saving.

This story chronicles the journey of Dominic Trevino, a character from Fear of Falling. However, it can be read as a standalone.

afraidtofly6

Excerpt:

I approached her slowly, letting my eyes take in her soft, feminine curves. That’s what I loved the most about women—their softness, their delicateness. It made them appear breakable, just like me. And it made me appreciate that vulnerability, in hopes that someone could—and would—one day, appreciate mine.
That’s why even though I never offered more than a few hours of toe-curling pleasure, I assured each second was spent tending to their sexual desires and making them feel treasured. Just because I was a whore, it didn’t make me callous or uncaring. If anything, it made me more aware of my humanity.

I pushed it all away, trading my own hang-ups and idiosyncrasies for the mental numbness that sex could provide and did what I do best: Fuck. I was good at this part—touching, kissing, licking. And when we were both ready—too ravenous with desire to consider my aversions—I drove into her slowly, all the way to the hilt. Until her body completely covered mine and soothed the ache of loneliness with wet warmth. This was the feeling I had been chasing since I was just a child, barely a man. That sweet oblivion that only mindless sex could provide. I was made whole by emptying myself into another, and for the barest of moments, I became separate from my pain and anger. I became the type of man that could look himself in the mirror and not see the horror of his past standing behind him, its razor sharp claws cutting into the skin of his shoulders while it smiled in that sinister way that still made my skin crawl.

I had seen that malevolence in my dreams every day since as long as I could remember. Sometimes it was in the form of a smile, a laugh. Sometimes it wore the face of ecstasy and passion. But it was always terrifying.

I lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling long after Alyssa had passed out in blissful exhaustion. She came twice, once by my tongue, the other with her ankles on my shoulders. She was a screamer, and I kept wondering if Angel would bust in here, wondering if I was fucking or killing the girl. Then, if Alyssa was up for it, she’d join, like she had just this past weekend with Cherri. It wasn’t that we wanted each other in that way—oh hell no. We were just better…together. It made it even easier to get out of our heads and lost in the movement of our bodies.

It was co-dependent like a motherfucker. And unhealthy. And unconventional. But it was all we knew.

Review: Alex by Sawyer Bennett

Author: Sawyer Bennett

Book: Alex (Cold Fury Hockey #1)

Other books in series:

Garrett (Cold Fury Hockey #2)
Zack (Cold Fury Hockey #3)
Ryker (Cold Fury Hockey #4)

tl;dr recommendation: hockey god + smart woman + just enough emotion to make you swoon = an awesome read

Book Summary:

Hockey star Alexander Crossman has a reputation as a cold-hearted player on and off the rink. Pushed into the sport by an alcoholic father, Alex isn’t afraid to give fans the proverbial middle finger, relishing his role as the MVP they love to hate. Management, however, isn’t so amused. Now Alex has a choice: fix his public image through community service or ride the bench. But Alex refuses to be molded into the Carolina Cold Fury poster boy . . . not even by a tempting redhead with killer curves.

As a social worker, Sutton Price is accustomed to difficult people–like Alex, who’s been assigned to help her create a drug-abuse awareness program for at-risk youth as part of the team’s effort to clean up his image. What she doesn’t expect is the arrogant smirk from his perfect lips to stir her most heated fantasies. But Sutton isn’t one to cross professional boundaries–and besides, Alex doesn’t do relationships . . . or does he? The more she sees behind Alex’s bad-boy facade, the more Sutton craves the man she uncovers.”

Longer Review:

Of course this book is great. How could it be anything else? hockey god + smart woman + just enough emotion to make you swoon = an awesome read. Hockey men know how to use their sticks…#justsayin.

Fun fact: I actually read these books in reverse order [well, except for Ryker], even though my reviews are going to be in correct order. This just goes to show that yes, they are standalones & you can read them in any order. Although, I recommend reading them in order because you do get spoilers doing it like I did.

In this book, Alex surprised me. Let’s just say that the man comes a long long way from where he once was. Here, he’s an emotional juvenile. He’s shut off and shut down. He has an attitude about everything – not just about his love life, in which he remains an emotionless fuckwit – but everything. His shitty attitude causes the higher ups at Cold Fury to force a little intervention upon him. If he wants to keep his very well-paying job, then he needs to “volunteer” to be a celebrity spokesperson for an anti-drug campaign.

And this is where Asshole Alex meets Sutton Price, the no-nonsense drug counselor who is his contact for the campaign. Sutton is definitely different than every girl Alex has ever met – she’s strong, she’s independent, and she’s not willing to take his shit. Of course, she’s insanely beautiful, too. The love Sutton has for her family is probably one of the most attractive qualities about her. She’s down to earth & just normal. Alex needs normal.

The connection is instant and insane. However, they don’t just fall into bed together. Alex’s reaction to Sutton is so incredibly endearing, it’s like he turns into a sixteen year old boy who gets nervous & vulnerable. He’s brutally honest about his concerns about hurting her – but he won’t stop seeing her because he just likes her.

Sutton & Alex balance each other out so well – they have such a similar background story but have reacted so differently to the set of circumstances life has thrown at them. While the subject matter of the book is serious, the storyline doesn’t drag you too deeply into the seriousness, and I liked that. It gave the appropriate amount of time to let the characters deal with their issues (ok, to let Alex deal with his issues) while still focusing on the love story that was playing out.

That ending caused massive swooning. It’s uniquely not unique, and I loved it. It just made me fall even further for Alex. LOVE SO HARD.

About NOWHERE BUT HERE:

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she’s curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn’t mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They’re the good guys. They protect people. They’re…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club’s most respected member—is in town, he’s gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it’s his shot at his dream. What he doesn’t count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

Hand rider on handlebars, close-up

NOWHERE BUT HERE Trailer:

 Excerpt:

From Emily’s Point of View. Set up: Emily is riding a motorcycle for the very first time and she’s riding it with Oz.

THE MOTORCYCLE ACCELERATES AND THE FEW inches I had established between me and Oz: gone. My body slides forward, colliding into his, and we click together like two puzzle pieces. Heat rushes up my neck and onto my cheeks. My thighs are too close to his, too tight against his body and this is way more intimate than I have been before with a guy.

Even when the two of us kissed.

Oz veers left, away from Olivia’s, away from the main road, and the entire motorcycle pitches to the side. My heart thunders and my fingers clutch not only at Oz’s belt loop, but at the material of his jeans, and his hips.

Oz glances at me over his shoulder as the bike straightens out. “Lean with it, Emily.”

Right. Lean with Oz and the bike. Got it. The narrow road curves ahead and this time when Oz and the bike tilt, I move along with it. Oz releases one of the amazingly high handlebars and massages my knee before returning his hand to the grip. Whether in reassurance or to affirm I mastered the curve I don’t know, but either way, I sit higher.

The wind whips through my hair and onto my face and I shut my eyes for a brief second and pretend that I’m flying. There’s something energizing, something hypnotic, something inside me that begs to burst out of a cage in search of freedom.

The motorcycle kicks forward and our speed increases. Beams of sunlight filter through the towering trees and green foliage blurs together as we fly over the road. From head to toe, my body vibrates with the loud growling of the powerful machine.

My knee still tingles from where Oz laid his fingers on me and I’ve never been more aware of my hands in my life. I should let go of Oz’s body, but I can’t. Belt loops weren’t enough and my fingers have somehow edged up and onto his sides. Oz is solid. Yes, definitely solid. Every inch of him that I touch is tight muscle.

Oz is a year older than me, but somehow he seems older, wiser and hotter than any other guy I’ve known. Just the way he rides his bike creates this overabundance of confidence.

Warm sensations I’ve never experienced before blossom through me. We enter another curve and I lean with him. I like how in sync I’ve become with Oz and the motorcycle. Like we’ve merged into one.

The purr of the engine deepens and Oz eases the bike to a stop. His feet hit the ground and he turns the machine off. It’s as if all sound in the world ceased, or maybe I’ve gone deaf because there’s no way anything can be this still or silent.

The wind picks up and the silence is frightened away with the roar of the trees bending. Both Oz and I shift with the flow of air and Oz doesn’t move the bike until the breeze gentles.

Oz kicks down the stand and the bike tilts, but not too much. He sets a hand over the fingers that I laced together across his stomach. Oh, hell, I’m plastic wrapped to him. I drop my head onto his shoulder and it places me closer, and closer is not what I need.

I go to unglue myself, but Oz squeezes my fingers, sending a jolt of electricity up my arms. “You okay?”

I have to clear my throat to speak and that just sucks. “Yes.”

Oz slides his fingers against mine and a fluttering occurs in my stomach. It’s a light fluttering. Ticklish even, and my survival instincts scream at me to get off this motorcycle.

Review: The Gentleman Mentor by Kendall Ryan

Author: Kendall Ryan

Book: The Gentleman Mentor

tl;dr recommendation: Cameron Hale can dominate me anytime and anywhere he’d like. Yes, please.

Book Summary:

He calls himself the Gentleman Mentor.

Just reading his ad makes me feel more alive than I have in years.

He promises to teach me the art of seduction … and show me the most sinfully erotic pleasures. He’s going to help me become the kind of confident, sexy woman men can’t ignore.

Six lessons … with the most gorgeous man … who happens to be a Dom.

The only problem … now that I’ve experienced his brand of delectable domination will anyone else ever compare?

She’s a client. That’s all.

Or it should be.

But with every lesson, she’s becoming more.

The secrets I’m hiding behind the image of the Gentleman Mentor make telling her the truth—and having anything real—impossible.

I’m training her for another man, and that fact guts me every time I think of it.

I know she’s not mine … but part of me won’t accept that.

Am I willing to risk it all to keep her?

THE GENTLEMAN MENTOR is a full-length standalone novel.

Longer Review:

If I didn’t already like a man who was dominant, intense, brooding and yet caring, I would now. Cameron Hale is one hot and sexy gentleman. The way he speaks, the way he looks at Brielle, and the way he fucks has me halfway to the floor in the kneeling position.

Brielle is a quiet bookworm. Perhaps this is a slight pander to the reading audience, but I don’t care. I liked her. She’s trying to step out of her comfort zone since her attempts at dating have led nowhere interesting. When she sees an ad for the Gentleman Mentor she figures, what the hell, and emails him. Soon she’s being trained, groomed and adored by Hale.

While Hale is quick to remind Brielle that there aren’t any feelings attached to their lessons, he’s really reminding himself because he’s quickly succumbing to the ‘holy-shit-i’m-attached-to-this-woman’ disease. He doesn’t know what to do with his feelings. I mean, he’s a Dominant. This woman can’t possibly want to enter his world. She can’t possibly understand him. And he can’t ever want to open his heart up again, since it was so tragically ripped from his chest before.

However, like a force of nature, Brielle and Hale continue to passionately come together. The last session is looming upon them, and both of them deal with how they’re going to handle their parting. Especially since Hale is training Brielle to be with another man.

The ending was a bit lackluster, but the overall story was not. There are some really great scenes that push Brielle’s limits and made me want to push my own. It’s hot, it’s intense, it’s really great. – 4 Stars –
