Release Day – TODAY
INTERCEPTED EMMA HART ITUNES EBOOK COVER
Four people. Four goals. Four endings.

In the third and final book of the USA Today bestselling By His Game series, the rules of the game no one knew they’d have to play are blurring, and when the past becomes the opposing team, hearts aren’t the only thing at stake of being lost…

Finding naked pictures of her best friend on her boyfriend’s phone wasn’t in Everleigh White’s five year plan. Neither was moving back to Los Angeles, the city of dreams that never managed to make hers come true. There’s only so many years you can be in love with your best friend before you realize he’s never going to love you back, after all. If only her ex would stop showing up at the gym where she works, she’d be much happier.

Being a father at nineteen wasn’t how Reid North, the Vipers’ wide receiver, imagined his life going, but when his ex-girlfriend tricked him into parenthood, he accepted it. Eventually. Now, with his ex on the verge of being released from prison, he’s holding onto full custody of his seven year old son, Leo. Football and Leo have left Reid no time for dating… Until Everleigh comes back.

His best friend his whole life, Everleigh never knew Reid loved her. She left before he could tell her. Now she’s back in front of him, and he’s not letting go. Even if all he gets is her friendship again. But in a city like L.A., dreams come true when you’re least expecting it.

So do nightmares.

With their exes beating down their doors with demands and explanations, their hesitant and building relationship is threatened at every corner. They’re at serious risk of being intercepted by the past, and that’s a ball Reid is determined to catch.

Except desperation can lead to stupidity—and Reid soon realizes he can’t catch every ball, no matter how perfectly it’s thrown to him. This time a fumble could cost more than a few points.

It could cost him everything.

(INTERCEPTED is the third and final book in the By His Game series and can be read as a standalone, although it is advised to read BLINDSIDED and SIDELINED before, in this order.)

ADD TO GOODREADS

EXCERPT

I follow him down the sidewalk, feeling a little antsy. I mean, he looks like Reid. Okay, an older Reid, but still Reid. He sounds like Reid, he acts like Reid, but he… feels like someone else. He doesn’t feel like the guy who dragged me out from behind curtains at parties and forced me to the dance, or the guy who begged me to go to his high school and college football games because he insisted he always caught better when I was there.

He feels… rawer. Realer. Rougher.

And I’m terrified.

He was always the one person I struggled to say no to. It was his eyes, and his smile, and the fact that I was crazy fucking in love with him. I’m afraid that now, although four years have passed, that I won’t be able to say no, either

That much is obvious by the fact I’m standing outside a sandwich shop I’ve never seen in my life.

“Trust me,” Reid says, smiling as he pushes the door open.

I stare at him flatly. Still, I follow him in like a little puppy because I’m always game for a good sandwich.

“Two meatball subs,” Reid orders. “Both toasted with cheese, but one with extra cheese. No salad or sauces on either.” Order done, he looks back at me and winks.

God. He even remembers the sandwich.

“This isn’t good for my diet,” I mutter, following him along the counter to the register.

“Or mine.” He smirks, glancing at me and running his eyes over my body. “And for what it’s worth, you could probably have another cheat day without it making a difference.”

I hit his arm again. “Shut up. You can’t perve on me. It’s wrong.”

“That’s what you think.” He hands over twenty bucks and raise his eyebrow at me. Then, leaning in, he whispers, “My cock thinks different, Ever.”

I swallow. Well, shit. How am I supposed to respond to that?

I’m not. That’s right. I’m not.

I take my warm sandwich from the counter and grip it tightly, heading toward a table in the corner. I slide into the seat against the wall and unwrap my sandwich at a snail’s pace. Each crinkle of the paper surrounding it seems ten times louder than normal as I studiously ignore Reid’s bulky, muscular form sitting opposite me.

Dammit. I shouldn’t be attracted to him. I shouldn’t consider being attracted to him.

Sure, I was before. In the ‘you’re handsome, be my Prince Charming’ kinda way. Now, though? Now it’s a, ‘holy crap, rip off my clothes and ravish me on your backseat!’ kinda attracted.

I’m not saying either way is bad. I’m just saying that I would prefer for the first type of attracted.

I bite into the sandwich so I don’t have to talk to him. But, apparently, he doesn’t get the message.

“I didn’t know you worked at the gym.”

I swallow. “You say it like it’s the only gym in Los Angeles.”

“It’s just… the gym.” He smirks. He studies me for a second before the curve turns downward. “Why’d you leave, Ev?”

“You knew I was going.”

“Sure I did. I just didn’t know you were going Casper on my ass and fucking off without a word.”

My eyes fall and I focus on my sandwich. Carelessly, I pick at the top of the bread. “I had my reasons, okay? It was easier for me if the media didn’t follow me so intently. You know they thought I was going to star on Broadway instead of college.”

“God, you’re a damn shit liar, Everleigh White.”

“It’s the truth, Reid, okay? They were all up in Dad’s business because of the Hartman movie, and when those Broadway rumors started it was bullshit. I ran without anyone knowing so they wouldn’t follow me. It lasted a week, but I didn’t have them timing my pees on the plane so there we go.” I glance up. “Believe me, okay? I’m not lying.” Not entirely, anyway.

“Whenever you’ve told me you’re not lying, you’ve been lying.” The force of his gaze makes me look up. “I still fucking know you, Ever. You haven’t changed a single damn bit.”

“And you still can’t control your f-bomb,” I shoot back.

“Says the girl who drops it like she drops the word ‘hi’ at a high school reunion.”

“Kiss my ass.”

“You offerin’, firecracker?”

“You taking me up on it?”

“I could flip you over this table in a second and you know it.”

I narrow my eyes and grab my half-eaten sandwich. Standing, I reach toward the trashcan and slam the screwed-up package into it, leaving the lid to slam down as I turn on my heel and head for the door.

Reid says nothing. But he follows me. I hear his footsteps against the tiled floor of the sandwich place, and he grabs the door the second I let it go, stopping it from slamming.

My feet pound against the sidewalk. Jesus, I don’t remember him being this so fucking infuriating before. Was he this demanding? Or frustrating? Or goddamned annoying?

Hell to it all. Was he this fucking sexy?

No, siree. No, he was not.

And that’s the frickin’ problem.

 REVIEW:

Best friends & lovers?

YES AND YES. Reid and Ever are both in Emma Hart’s newest panty dropping novel about two lifelong friends who fell in love at a young age when they couldn’t be together and who are reunited again when maybe they shouldn’t be together.

Reid has a seven year old son, Leo, who clearly wasn’t planned, but Reid refuses to call him a mistake. That boy is his whole life. I’m pretty sure the maternal gene skipped a generation with me, but fuck it, even my ovaries started to ache while Reid explained the love he has for his son.

Ever fights the connection between her and Reid for whatever reason. LADY UP sister, that man is hot! Thankfully Reid’s more straightforward than most and his whispered words are straightup foreplay. Ever gets over her reservations quickly enough and her lips – and heart – will never be the same (please, you know they have sex, that’s not a spoiler).

Ever also has a few other things on her mind – like her asshole of an ex boyfriend who cheated on her with her best friend and then there’s someone who may or may not be stalking her now. But she can’t focus on that because Reid’s baby momma, Claire, is about to get out of jail and both she and Reid are terrified as to what Claire is going to do. I TOLD YOU, PEOPLE – DRAMA.

There are plenty of incredibly steamy scenes that are well placed and well executed and will certainly satisfy you (and Ever). This book is also full of comedic relief that only a seven year old who thinks girls still give you cooties can offer.

Intercepted gives you  reunited love, crazy drama, adorable little boy kisses and some serious DILF action. I was smiling so hard at the end of this book. Loves!

***
From Emma Hart, the New York Times bestselling author of the
Game series, comes a brand new series where the game is realer, the tension is
tighter, the sex is hotter, and the stakes are the highest of all…
Two people. Two agendas. Two games.
What happens when the out-there It-Boy of football meets the
secret It-Girl of fashion?
As the daughter of Hollywood’s sweetheart, Leah Veronica
can’t even buy a coffee without finding her face on a magazine stand, so it’s no
wonder she’s launching her first fashion line in secret. With it debuting at
New York Fashion Week in just under a month, extra time in the spotlight is the
last thing she needs.
The son of the best quarterback the league has ever seen,
filling legendary shoes as the L.A. Vipers’ quarterback was inevitable for
Corey Jackson. So was meeting Leah Veronica—the first girl to hand him his ass
without putting a hair out of place.
Getting the handsome, prickly blonde into his bed becomes
his number one goal. But getting the sexy, over-confident footballer the hell
away from her becomes Leah’s—at least until she realizes the best way to do
that is to give him what he wants.
If only it was that simple.
When Corey discovers who she is, and private photos of
Hollywood’s finest find their way online, everything they thought they knew is
thrown into disarray.
And when secrets are exposed and hearts are shattered, they
have to figure out if they’ve been blindsided by love or reality, and if it’s
worth running the extra yard to win the game they never meant to play.
Three people. Three motives. Three reasons.
When the game leaves the field in the second book in the USA Today bestselling BY HIS GAME series and mixes with sex, lies, and betrayal, the future isn’t the only thing on the line…
Macey Kelly has sworn off men. Unless they’re going to zip in and out of her apartment—and her vagina—quicker than they can give her an orgasm, she’s not interested. Finding out her boyfriend of three years got her cousin pregnant was a total confidence knock. Luckily for Macey, confidence is
something she has in abundance, so all Mitch’s asshole move did was make her pretty cynical toward men.
The last thing Jack Carr needs at the start of the season is for a dark-haired, sexy as sin, gyspyesque beauty to be consuming his thoughts. Football is his life, which leaves no time for girls. Unless they’re the love ‘em and leave ‘em girls. Becoming one of the best running backs the league has ever seen by racking up the yards is his top priority… not bedding Macey Kelly, despite her affinity for blow jobs and total sexual abandon.
Avoiding each other is the perfect solution, but when your best friends are in a serious living together kind of relationship, that isn’t always an option. Sometimes, sex on tap is the easiest option. And the sweetest.
Until Mitch shows up with a bombshell that could shatter Macey’s perfectly carved out life. It’s been a year, but he isn’t giving her up, not now he has a chance at winning her back. And he knows her buttons. Every single one of them.
Unfortunately for him, Jack Carr isn’t a loser. The star running back has his eye on the Vince Lombardi—and on Macey. But seeing her hanging between them both isn’t something he’s down with, not when he discovers why she’s so against anything more-ish, as she puts it.Macey quickly realizes she’s the ball being passed between two desperate yet opposing teams, and that only one of them can score the touchdown. But will the winner be the guy she lived with and loved for three years, or will the winner be the guy who understands her and makes her body come alive?
In this game, someone will be sidelined, and calling the play isn’t always as easy as it seems.
(SIDELINED is a full-length, standalone novel. It’s not necessary to read BLINDSIDED before this book, but it is advised.)

Review: Only Trick by Jewel E. Ann

Author: Jewel E. Ann

Book: Only Trick

tl;dr recommendation: beautiful. heartbreaking. passionate. #MustRead

Book Summary:

“Don’t Look Back in Anger”

In one night, I lost five years of my life. Here’s what I know …

I was homeless.

I’m a recovering drug addict.

My inked skin crawls from lustful eyes.

I have a serious aversion to women.

My gay partner is a home wrecker.

I own a gun and I’m a damn good shot.

I’m a makeup artist, but it’s an insult to my talent.

I’ve never wanted to possess anything except my Ducati … until I met Darby.

Now here’s what I know since that day in the ER when she pieced me back together … nothing—but a few random thoughts.

My new “friend” is distracting, clingy, and obsessed with acronyms, emojis, and phrases like “breakfast soul mates.”

I didn’t want to like her, but she crawled under my skin and swallowed me whole. Now we’re best friends and she’s my new addiction. I’d drink her from a shot glass, snort her up my nose, or inject her into my veins if I could. What I won’t do … is ever tell her that.

She doesn’t know me … I don’t know me. When those missing years come back, I think she will hate me … I think I will hate me.

My parents named me Patrick Roth, and this is my story.

Longer Review:

First things first – this is NOT a male/male love story. If you go in with that expectation, you will be extremely disappointed. I can see how the blurb could make you think that’s what this is. But it’s not. This IS a beautiful male/female love story. K? K.

When Trick & Darby are together it’s like a flick of a switch. Nothing else matters – no one else matters. They are BFF’s, breakfast soul mates, and (eventually) lovers. But there’s one huge problem: Trick doesn’t know his past. Will his past eventually catch up to him and ruin the perfection of their relationship? LET’S HOPE NOT.

Good God this book is phenomenal. It shakes and guts you, holds and caresses you, lifts and warms you. Trick is so much more than the gay make up artist he portrays himself to be. Darby’s the piece of the puzzle that sheds light on his dark parts and fills that empty piece of his heart (probably with emojis).

The need builds and builds for these two until it’s at nearly explosive levels. My palms were sweating every time that Darby came near Trick. My heart started hammering when they kissed for the first time. And after Trick starts letting himself feel and love Darby, all bets were off. His words mark, possess and gut you to pieces. As Darby fell in love with him more and more each day, so did I.

gray-background-3

I absolutely loved the BFF talk and banter. The dialogue is funny and witty without even trying. Jewel has a quirky sense of humor and it shines right on through in this book. You’ll smile, laugh, and tear up a bit. Darby’s the kind of girl I’d love to be friends with, and NANA – LET’S NOT EVEN TALK ABOUT NANA BECAUSE SHE NEEDS HER OWN BOOK. God, I loved that woman. Even the secondary characters in this book are well written.

The depth, feelings, love and devotion grow with each passing page. There is nothing that Trick wouldn’t do for Darby – NOTHING. If you’re looking for a head over heels – swoon worthy hero, I’ve found him for you. GET IT NOW.

Exclusive Excerpt:

The rain pelted my face, making my tears obsolete on the dreariest day of my life. I watched the wooden coffin being lowered into the ground with long leather straps. My world had changed in a matter of moments.

Part of me wished I could go back to those precious seconds before my mom had revealed the truth about my name. What I thought had been real was actually a lie.

A lie.

The coffin touched down on the soaked earth. Three men, known as Watchers in our private society, were to the right of the burial hole. They pulled the leather straps from underneath the coffin, causing a sound that had me gritting my teeth.

These were the last moments before my mom would be buried for all eternity. Forever is a long time. It has no end and no beginning.

The Watchers, men over eighteen years of age who had taken an oath of commitment to The Light, stepped away from the grave. Most of the time, they were nineteen before they officially took the title due to the extreme training and discipline of the teachings. Essentially, they watched over our way of life, keeping it pure and simple, ensuring all of our laws were followed. The outside world was filled with sin and was doomed. Sometimes, I felt the position was used as a way to keep females uninformed. Questioning thoughts were not appropriate according to the teachings.

The rain continued as the men put their hands behind their backs and looked toward the Keeper, the leader of our community.

We never spoke of the outside world. There were things we needed from it to survive, but we peacefully coexisted. All of my life, I stayed within the walls of our community called The Society. At the back of my mind, I always wondered what life was like beyond the borders.

Stoically, I stood at the head of the burial hole next to the Keeper. An eerie chill ran down my spine being so close to him. Normally, I tried to avoid his presence at all costs.

Lightning struck and I had to fight not to flinch. We patiently waited until the Keeper deemed it time to speak. The Keeper made all the laws and saw to it that visions he received from The Light became realty. I never understood what The Light was, but to question it was blasphemy. Basically, we were to blindly follow. Something never seemed right with that thought process, but that was life.

Excerpt

“Clothes off and prepare to be searched.” His voice is warm, lush, and filled with sensual promise. But I am oh so aware that, dominant as he is, he’s mindful of my issue with being undressed. A warm, fluttery feeling spreads from my belly, beating back the memories.

“Help me.”

And he does. His hands over my hands, we slide my shirt and bra up and over my head, his fingers tangling with mine, caressing my body as I am bared for his pleasure. When we get to my shoulders, I raise my arms and Ray takes over. Slow and sensual, his fingers glide over my skin, filling me with the sensation of his touch. When he reaches my hands, he yanks the clothing over my head and tosses it to the floor with a victory growl.

“Back in position.” He smooths his hands down my arms and places my palms against the cool metal surface of the shop wall. And then he is everywhere, his hands roaming over my body, setting fire to my skin. When he has thoroughly touched and kissed every inch of my exposed skin, he tugs out my ponytail holder. My hair fans out across my back in a silken wave.

“Fuck. I love your hair.” He strokes his fingers through the strands. “Don’t put it up when you’re with me.”

“Guess that means I won’t be with you when I’m exercising or doing ink.” With a grin, I look back over my shoulder, but my smile fades at the intensity of his stare.

“You know what I do to girls who give me attitude?” He kicks my legs apart, then smooths his hand over my ass.

Desire, dark and delicious, curls through my body. “What do you do?”

His hand tightens, fingers digging into my flesh. “I spank them.”

I make a soft sound, deep in my throat. Morbid fascination, dan- gerous desire—everything I’ve imagined but never thought could be real, he offers with a brush of his fingertips. “I’ve never been spanked,” I whisper. “But I think I might like it.”

His deep, satisfied rumble pulses between my legs. “You’re gonna kill me, sayin’ things like that.” He circles my waist with his hands, his fingers lingering on the waistband of my jeans, skimming along the inside, his touch an erotic tickle that makes me writhe against him.

“Don’t move.”

“Then don’t do things that make me want to push you to the ground and tear off your clothes.”

He chuckles, amused. “We’ll get to that later. Right now, you’re taking off your jeans and I’m gonna help you, like last time.”

With a vicious tug, he reaches around and opens the zipper, then positions my hands on my hips and covers them with his palms, guiding me as I push down my jeans. Although he is working around my trigger, he is still totally in control, and I tremble, overwhelmed with the knowledge that for the first time, I can have what I want without the past getting in the way.

He crouches beside me, offering his shoulder as I toe off my shoes and kick my jeans away. Then he licks his lips and barks, “Back to the wall.”

My mouth waters at his tone—low, commanding, authoritative. Intensely erotic. He is so unlike any man I have ever been with. I turn without thinking, curiosity overriding reticence and my fear of losing control.

Crouched in front of me, Ray glides his hands up my legs, his fingers drawing lazy circles over the sensitive skin of my inner thighs, turning my thoughts to the throbbing between my legs. Unable to resist, I run my hands through the soft fuzz on his head.

He looks up, his eyes hooded with desire, then stands, dwarfing me with his massive body. With one hand pressed against the wall beside me, he glides a finger along the edge of my silky red panties, his lips curling into a satisfied smile when I whimper.

“You like red panties?”

“I like what’s hidden by red panties.” His naughty finger glides over my mound, brushing over the thin slip of fabric covering my aching clit. My breath catches in my throat, and I arch my back and moan.

“You want more?” His voice rumbles in my ear as he slides his hand down to cup my sex.

“Yes.”

He wraps one arm around my waist, pulling my body against him. Then he kicks my legs apart.

“Open for me.”

Review: Shaken by Sylvie Fox

Author: Sylvie Fox

Book: Shaken

tl;dr recommendation: Points for diversity/originality; points deducted for lack of connection. 2.75-3 stars.

Book Summary:

When Jessie Morales’ boss beckons her onto an elevator to discuss a possible promotion, she has no choice but to put aside her lifelong fear to find out what her future may hold.

LAPD officer Cameron Becker is shocked when his estranged wife of several years calls him after an earthquake. Despite their time apart, he’s off to rescue Jessie because he doesn’t want her to repeat of the worst day of her life.

After their wedding, Cameron made a solemn vow: Once mine, always mine. Years later, he still holds fast to this belief. When a natural disaster brings them together, Cam is poised to get his wife back. But will Jessie choose family and career over love a second time?

Longer Review:

This story is definitely different than most in the romance genre, which I think is a good thing. And I loved the line ‘once mine, always mine’…so there’s that. However, I really couldn’t love the characters like I wanted to.

This book follows Yossenia (Jessie) Morales who is a television anchor on the local sensational Spanish news station. She’s desperate to move up in the world and start reporting on actual news and she betrayed her husband to try to make that dream a reality. Her husband, the cop. Her betrayal may have inched her career upward, but her marriage was destroyed.

Jessie and Cam have been separated now for two years – but aren’t divorced because of Jessie’s Catholic-guilt. [Note: this author has a fuck-ton of Catholic guilt. It’s stuck through this book like peanut-butter on the roof of your mouth.] When Jessie gets caught in an elevator during an earthquake, Cam comes running to save her. AND SO WE BEGIN.

The writing unfortunately didn’t make the characters leap off the page. I applaud this book for having diversity and focusing on a love story of somewhat realistic people; however, I wasn’t falling over myself to finish this book. I just didn’t FEEL it. Jessie’s family is undocumented – she is not undocumented anymore due to her marriage with Cam – and she struggles to find a balance of being the good sister/daughter while being the only one who can technically be in the country. This obviously makes being married to a cop also sort of an issue.

I wished that Jessie was more accepting and open with her sexuality and that she committed more to her decisions. I almost felt my own repressive upbringing attempting to re-assert itself (don’t worry, I told it where it can go). I also wished that there were more scenes where Cam stuck up for Jessie and/or showed how much he cared. Overall I didn’t feel the connection to the characters, but it’s a sweet story of reclaimed love.

Excerpt

“Who’s teasing?” I offer him my breasts, caged between my fingers.“All for you.” “The way your pink nipples tighten for me, I can’t wait to fuck those beauties.” He limps toward me, the muscles along his torso flex into rippling planes that temp me to run my hands over his corrugated abs up to his sculpted shoulders. The moment he touches me, I groan in pleasure.
“Please,” I plead. Letting go a dark-sounding chuckle, he kneads the skin over my breasts, thrumming my nipples. “I’ve got something else for you.” From his pocket, he removes a thin cord of black leather attached to tiny clamps. I watch as he attaches one clamp to my nipple, then the other, and I bite my lip from the swelling erotic sensation, tingling within each of my breasts.
“Ben,” I rasp his name. He bends and licks the tip of his tongue across each of my peaks, teasing me until jolts of pleasure flare and land between my legs.
I moan hungry sounds, spreading my fingers along his face and arch as he sucks my nipple into his searing mouth. Raising his head, he kisses a path up my chest to my neck, then sucks a point that has me melting. “God!” I groan.
“How about an abbreviated tour of the place?” he asks, gifting me with a very sexy and confident smirk while he tugs me toward the terrace doorway. “Yes. That would be wonderful.”
My chest squeezes at the flickering pain that slices across his face when he takes a step on the ankle I’ve hurt. “I’m sorry about your ankle.” He chuckles darker this time, and there’s a percolating lascivious mirth in his expression.
“Are you really?” “I am. How can I make it up to you? Just tell—” He presses one of his fingers to my lips. “Shhh. Don’t you worry. I’ve got plans for you.” He guides me into his living room, but then pauses as he spreads out his arms.
“East or South?

Review: Only For Us by Cristin Harber

Author: Cristin Harber

Book: Only For Us (#3) – coming soon on April 14, 2015!!

Series:

Only For Him (#1) – review here
Only For Her (#2) – review here

tl;dr recommendation: I can’t love this series any harder. Go one click your face off.

Book Summary:

The third installment of the Only series. Must be read in order.

Grayson and Emma. First love. True love. And… they have a daughter. Abandonment is his curse. He left his woman, survived his team, and missed the moment most precious to a father. Until now.

I didn’t know you were killing yourself with work. I didn’t know you’re raising our daughter. So help me God, had I known, there is no military force on earth that would’ve kept me from you.

Love needs to heal all, or they won’t survive the collision of their separate lives. Emma must reach deep into her heart that is barely hanging on and find forgiveness. Grayson, wrecked with PTSD-filled nightmares, must prove that he’s here to stay and able to rebuild his family against all odds.

I need to say I love you. But what I mean is I love you–in a way that defies definition and exists only in a world that you and I are in.

Only for Us is the third installment in the Only series. All novellas will release Spring 2015.

Longer Review:

This series guts me in every.single.installment. I was reading through my fingers for the last few chapters since I could see what was happening but begged it not to happen. Sort of like in a horror flick when you scream for the person to NOT GO DOWN THE STAIRS. Yup. That was me. Requesting that a fictional character listen to me. Note: it didn’t work.

This is an exceptional story that will pull at your heartstrings and fill you up with so much hope you’ll want to explode. There is no place I’d rather be than by Emma’s side while she’s standing up to her family on behalf of Grayson. That momma bear grit and determination she’s gained over the past few years? It comes out in full force. NO ONE is messing with her family, even those that are closest to her.

And GRAY. oh my freaking god GRAY. He’s determined to fix the past. Fix his mistakes. Meet his daughter. My heart burst into a million pieces when that happened. It was completely perfect and yet so imperfect. Cristin does an unbelievable job of capturing such a sacred moment that I sort of felt like I should look away because it was so personal.

The cliffhanger killed me. again. because that’s what they do. But the next installment is the final installment SO I WILL SURVIVE. I will be crossing my fingers for the ending that Gray and Ems so desperately deserve. I can’t love this series any harder. Go one click your face off.

Prologue *Layla*
“What the fuck are you doing here, Cherry?” Carter growls and stands up from a metal chair.
I’ve never seen this look on him before. Well, not directed at me anyway. What should I expect though? The man is in prison and has been for four years, and still has another four to go.
I haven’t seen him since that night. The night I can’t remember. The reason I’m here.
“Did you get my letters?” I ask, ignoring his question. I sent hundreds over the years and never once did he respond.
“Yeah, I got them,” he fires back.
“But…you never…” My words trail off as the force of what he’s saying hits me. He got my letters; he just didn’t care enough to write back. The first ones started off asking what had happened, because I had so many questions. All I have is this giant blank spot in my mind driving me insane. One second I have a perfect life and the next I wake up in the hospital covered in bruises, with my mother missing, along with my bodyguard. Poof! No more Mom and no more Carter. For some reason, the loss of Carter hurt the most. After that my once-loving father turned cold. Others might have called my father cold before on account of his dealings with the dirtier elements of society, but I never thought he was…until now.
“Ever think there was a reason I didn’t respond? I threw them out. I don’t want you here.” Carter has always been blunt and to the point but he was never intentionally cruel, and never with me. He had been my bodyguard for six months before that night. I couldn’t turn around without tripping over him. Anytime I was allowed to the leave house, he was at my side like a shadow.
Shifting uncomfortably, I take him in. He’s huge. I remember him as always being big, but now he seems massive. His six foot four frame looks like it’s been chiseled from stone and could bust the seams of his prison uniform. I don’t recall him having so many tattoos either, but now every inch of exposed skin is covered in them, peeking up around the neck of his uniform. I also don’t recall ever wanting to lick them as I do now.
Slowly moving my eyes back to his face, I see his jaw is hard from clenching it. His eyes lock on mine, so green they almost look like colored contact lenses. Those blazing emeralds snap away and do a head-to-toe sweep of my body. My breath catches in my throat at the look he gives me. It was hard and deadly before, but now it appears hungry and consuming. He makes me feel naked, completely stripped.
In three long strides he’s in front of me, lifting me into his arms. Caught completely off guard, I gasp. He wraps his free hand in my long hair and pulls my head back, claiming my mouth. My fingers grab the fabric of his shirt and try to pull him closer. I feel like my whole body has just come alive. My body is overcome with all the passion and fervor I’ve felt all these years, but I don’t exactly have any experience to guide me. I’m twenty and I’ve never been kissed. But this doesn’t feel like any kiss I’ve ever imagined. It feels like he’s devouring my body with his mouth, his teeth, his tongue. It feels like Carter is ravishing my soul.
Going to an all-girls’ school kept me sheltered. I even took all my college classes online after I graduated. The only dick that was ever near me was hired by my father. His men were either deadly scared of him or had too much respect for him to touch me—probably a little of both.
I follow Carter’s lead and return his kiss. I’ve wanted this for years. Before he was taken away, I used to try to get his attention and shamelessly flirt with him. I think I was terrible at it because never once did he touch me. I never cared that he was ten years older than I was. I wanted him. I even had this silly idea that if I waited for him, he could be mine. That’s why I wrote him those stupid letters that he clearly didn’t give a shit about. Feeling my anger rush back at the reminder, I go to push at his chest, but we’re ripped apart suddenly. A guard has me in his arms and my feet are still off the floor. It takes three other guards to wrestle Carter down onto one of the tables.
His hands grip the side of the table, his white knuckles betraying his iron grip. “Fuck, Cherry, never thought I was the jealous type,” he says, his voice rough with a touch of fury and possession. “Until you.” His glare moves to the guard holding me. “Now get your fucking hands off her.”
I’m stunned by his words. He’s pinned to a table by three guards and he’s giving orders? I guess some things never change.
“Get. Them. The. Fuck. Off,” Carter barks again as he starts to rise from his position, even as the guards try to push him down.
“This is my prison, Carter. You may get some leeway because of who you are, but there are cameras in here,” the guard holding me says as he places me back down on the floor.
“I just came for answers,” I whisper, hoping he doesn’t catch on to my lie. I want answers, but I want him more.
“I got no answers for you here. I don’t want to see your little ass in this place again, Cherry.” ‘Cherry’, the name used to make me smile. Now it’s starting to piss me off.
“Says the man who just had his tongue down my throat,” I shoot back, feeling my anger boil over. Hell, I shouldn’t have said that. I don’t want him to know I care, but how can he not after receiving all those stupid letters? Letters that had started off as questions but slowly turned into a diary. I sent him my every thought. But, as time went on, they morphed into love letters to him. Maybe he doesn’t know what they contained. Maybe he threw them out before reading them. I’m grasping at straws. He may not know it, but he is all I have left.
After my mother disappeared, my father turned as cold as she had been. I had always been a silly child who just got in my mother’s way. She was too busy going to events and maintaining an image to devote any time or attention to me. I can still remember her offhand comments about my weight and frenzied red hair. I just always seemed to be in her way—a disappointing nuisance. Now my father can barely look at me. Does my father love me? Yes, I believe so. Family is everything to him. But does he show it? Can I feel it? Not anymore. Now I’m put away on a shelf, having to sneak away to come here.
“I haven’t felt a woman’s body in years, can’t blame a man for taking opportunities as they arise,” he says cockily as the guards slowly let him up. He drops down into a metal chair. He seems completely unfazed by what has just happened. I guess that was all it was to him—a man needing a fix. He didn’t possess my mouth, my soul for those few moments because he needed to touch me. No one touches me.
“I see I don’t have anyone now. Looks like I can go,” I say flatly, all emotion leaching from my voice. Hell, if no one else wants to show me any tenderness, why should I give any?
“Good. Get gone,” he snarls through clenched teeth, but I see his eyes soften for an instant before being replaced by his usual stoniness. Or maybe I’m trying to convince myself and it was never there.
Pulling the picture I have from my pocket, I let it drop to the floor and I take one last look at the man I’ve been thinking about every night for the past four years. I don’t want the reminder of him anymore if he doesn’t want me.
I’m done living in a world that seems to feel nothing while I feel everything.
I have the quarter million I took from Daddy’s safe before I gave the guards the slip. I’m starting my life over, a life with no more holes in it, a life where I can find people who want to feel with me.
I turn to make my way to leave. Behind me I hear Carter rise from his chair, the metal scratching across the concrete floor. Opening the door to leave, I toss my final words over my shoulder. “Don’t you worry, Carter. No one will be seeing me around anymore.” The door slams behind me and I hear all hell break loose on the other side.
I square my shoulders and keep on walking. I only have one feeling in my heart now.
Freedom.
