Tested as a genius at age seven, I hide my emotions, become what they expect…bury my secrets. At nineteen, I trudge toward a predestined path, blinders on, heart safeguarded.

Until I dare to be wild.

Until Alec Marquez crashes into my world.

Until all that follows redefines everything I’ve ever known.

What happens when you stumble into a world of spies…and discover you belong there?

The Espionage Effect - The Blindfold Pic Quote

Review

Oh hello world of dangerous spies and subterfuge! While Devin is looking to restart her life or just find a new direction for it, she falls into a world that she didn’t knew existed…she and Alec heat up the sheets while the danger spikes around them. Of course, is anything really as it seems?

The first few chapters had me a little confused, but I quickly picked up what Kat was putting down and I realized I was supposed to be a little confused. The entire book is a question of whether things are really as they look and I sort of loved it. It had me thinking *GASP!* and trying to puzzle out the good from the bad, the real from the fake, the truth from the lies. I am also entirely in love with Devin’s brain. She’s incredibly intelligent and delightfully sarcastic – it’s practically a perfect combination.

Alec is equally as enticed with Devin’s brain…and her body…*fans self* He eye fucks her from the very first time he sees her and the heated perusals don’t let up. Even when his brain switches into a calculated mission, the stolen glances between them tell Devin that whatever is building is something even her logic can’t puzzle out.

I loved the layers of danger, sexual chemistry, logic, and betrayal that make up this modern day brainiac James Bond story. I quickly became invested in the characters and fell into the world of spies right along side Devin. Alec is more than welcome to get under my cover(s) anytime….*winks* 4 stars!

tl;dr recommendation: This series will pull out every emotion you’ve ever had, and some you didn’t know existed.

Book Summary:

From the author of Outlander… a magnificent epic that once again sweeps us back in time to the drama and passion of 18th-century Scotland…

For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland’s majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones …about a love that transcends the boundaries of time …and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his ….

Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire’s spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart …in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising …and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves….

Longer Review:

If you’re about to pick up this book after reading Outlander, welcome to the Fandom. If you haven’t yet read the summary of this book, you may want to do that now. When I started DiA I thought I was reading the wrong book – I had to go on to GoodReads and look up some reviews to discover that no, I hadn’t skipped five books in the series. NOPE – this book really does start out with Claire, twenty years in the future in her own time. Yes. YES.

Don’t get pissed, It’s in the goddamn book summary, this is not a spoiler.

However, this made me angry. SO ANGRY. How could she possibly leave Jamie? I deemed this to be an unforgivable action for which I was prepared to hold a grudge. Claire was practically dead to me as a character and I was now reading with a tinge of red surrounding my vision. Of course, as I learned what happened – and A LOT happens – I not only forgave Claire, but my heart broke. I’m tearing up a little bit right now thinking about how Jamie and Claire get to to the point where that has to happen.

So, just keep reading. Promise. You’ll be ok. Deep breaths.

But let’s back up – when we catch back up with Jamie and Claire, you’ll find that they go to Paris where Jamie takes over his cousin Jared’s shipping business. Jamie’s position allows him to infiltrate the Parisian politics and he actually becomes acquaintances *or something* with the Bonnie Prince Charlie. Jamie and Claire continue their secret mission to change the outcome of the future and save Scotland while walking a very tight political rope that, if the truth was exposed, could land Jamie in jail for treason – or worse.

This book reunites us with some characters we love to hate (i.e. Jack Randall) and we meet a few more characters we love to love – such as BlackJack’s much nicer brother, Alexander, and BOUTON! Of course, Jamie loses his shit a few times…as does Claire – and let’s not forget that Claire’s pregnant…

I adored learning more about Jamie. I could practically feel his imposing size when he was angry and firm hands when he was loving and see his lip curve up in a smirk when he was amused. I loved watching their marriage grow stronger with each trial they faced. While their lives are far from easy and their circumstances are less than ideal, their love is always enduring.

This series will pull out every emotion you’ve ever had, and some you didn’t know existed. I went from hating this book, hating Claire, and vibrating with rage to swooning uncontrollably and falling in love all over again. Diana is incredible…every time she backs the characters into an insurmountable corner, everything changes and somehow I manage to forgive every character for every terrible thing that has happened. DiA ends in a major cliffhanger – just so you know. But at that point, you’ll be completely hooked and so full of feels that it’s really no big deal as long as you have Voyager on hand. This book is unbelievably good.

ALLTHESTARS.

Review:

Elle’s screams of ‘Lord’ in the bedroom take on a whole new meaning in this sexy and suspenseful story. I adored Lord. I would get down on my knees to worship him, but he wouldn’t allow that because HIS WOMAN should never be looking up at him. (btw, I swooned so hard when those words came out of his mouth).

Elle may come from money, but she’s lost the things in her life that really matter: her father to death and her mother to alcohol. She shows up at Lord’s pawn shop one day and declares herself hired. It’s part late-rebellion but it’s mostly because she’s looking for something…an item that was taken and that she needs back.

Lord’s less than pleased that Elle decides to just appear out of thin air, but he’s mostly pissed because he can’t stop thinking about her. When circumstances require Lord to claim fake ownership of Elle he realizes he wants the real thing. In the same way that Elle decides to work for him, he decides they’re going to date. It’s incredibly adorable, infinitely endearing, and super fucking hot.

They have two rules: no expectations & no bullshit. Hallelujah. What’s even better is that they actually follow these rules.

I loved both characters and their interactions with each other. While danger is lurking and seems to follow them, they each cling to each other as the lifeline they never knew they needed. The lack of relationship angst made my heart soar. Lord was a rock for Elle and somehow, even with all of her issues, she keeps making the right decisions and clings to him. She’s no pushover, for which I gave her incredibly high marks, and Lord is about as sexy as a man can get.

Start praying, ladies. Lord kills Elle with romance and orgasms. Now, that’s my kind of heaven. This is one big, tattooed teddy bear who I absolutely loved watching fall in love. 4.5 stars!

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Lord

I fucking hated people who stole from me. Which was ironic, considering the only thing that had kept me from starving as a kid had been picking pockets and snatching purses. I dropped my elbows to the desk and rubbed a hand over my buzzed head.

“Goddamn, karma’s a bitch.”

“She the bitch you fucked last night, bro?” The leather of my office couch creaked as Mathieu sank his tall, lanky frame into it.

“How many times do I have to tell you not to call women ‘bitches,’ boy?”

My words were met with a long sigh from Mathieu. Ever since he’d walked into Chains and tried to grab a guitar and run back out the door—only to be tackled to the ground by yours truly—he’d been a fixture in my life. To be fair, his choices had been to work off the price of what he’d attempted to steal, or go directly to the nearest cop shop. The entire situation had been such a blast from the past, I’d caught myself smiling when I should’ve been glaring and scaring the piss out of the kid. But apparently I’d done an okay job of it because he’d decided starting a rap sheet at seventeen wasn’t a good plan. Thank fuck. Almost two years later, the kid was my right hand.

And now that Chains was mine, someone was stealing from me—but not just someone. An employee. Someone I should’ve been able to trust. The cameras I had installed on her day off had already paid for themselves.

I rolled my head from side to side, cracking my neck. I hated firing people. It never got easier. And this time? This time it was going to be even worse … because there would be tears. And quite possibly claws.

Pushing up from the chair, I strode to the door without looking at Mathieu. Over my shoulder, I tossed, “You might want to stay here; Brianna’s ass is about to get canned.”

“For real?” His words followed me out, but I didn’t bother to reply.

Every time I stepped foot onto the shop floor, a feeling of pride surged through me—pride that I’d helped build this business into one that was not only honest, but profitable. At least, it was profitable when one of my employees wasn’t skimming off the till and messing with my bank deposits.

Finger twirling in her long, dark extensions and gum snapping between her teeth, Brianna flipped the pages of a magazine with a giant black Sharpie in one hand, circling shit. Probably shit she wanted to buy with the money she’d been stealing from me. The store was empty, which made what I was about to do a little easier.

“Bree, need a few minutes.”

Her head popped up, lips pursing as she took me in. “You can have all the time you need, boss.” Her gaudy fake eyelashes batted at me in what I assumed was supposed to be a sexy move. I stowed the urge to tell her to save it for someone whose dick got hard at the sight of her … but since I was about to fire her, why add insult to injury? The woman had been unsuccessfully trying to add her notch to my bedpost since I’d hired her. Bringing her on had been a mistake, and I’d known it from the minute she’d walked in the door, but a friend had called in a favor.

“Boss? You had something to say?” she prompted.

I watched her, not speaking.

She stopped the hair twirling and capped the Sharpie, resituating herself on the stool and folding her hands in her lap.

“Lord?”

“You’re done.”

Bree’s dark eyes flew wide. “Done? You mean done for the day?”

“Done. For good. Get your shit and get out.”

Bree lost the innocent pose as she crossed her arms and stared me down. “Not until you tell me why.”

In two long strides, I closed the distance between the register and me and pressed my hands to the counter.

“I gave you a job. Gave you a paycheck you didn’t have to suck a dick to get. But that wasn’t enough for you. You had to have more, and instead of coming to me and asking for a raise, you decided to make it happen yourself.”

The color faded from her face, leaving her mocha-colored skin sallow. “Wh-what?”

“Get your shit.”

“I swear, I didn’t—”

“Don’t fucking lie to me. I can show you the tape if you want to see what I saw.”

Her lower lip started to wobble. It wasn’t going to work. I’d given her the benefit of the doubt, hoped I was wrong or it was just a one-time thing. But she’d gotten too bold.

“But I need this—”

I cut her off. She wasn’t even going to deny it. Not that she could. We both knew she’d done it, and I wasn’t in the mood to listen to her beg or justify her actions. Even though she didn’t know it, I’d already given her a second chance. And all that had done was cost me even more than I could afford to lose. “I needed someone to work the shop—someone who wasn’t going to fuck me over and steal from me. You weren’t capable of that, so you’re out. Now get your shit.”

“But—”

“Save your breath, Bree. I ain’t listening unless you’re here to tell me you’ve got all the money you’ve taken, and you’re putting it right back where it belongs.”

Her face twisted into an angry glare even as the tears started falling. “You … you don’t understand.”

“No, I really don’t understand.” I crossed my arms and waited her out. When she realized the water works weren’t changing my decision, she spun off the stool, grabbed her giant purple purse from behind the counter, and stalked toward the door.

“You get all self-righteous with me about a little cash while you basically steal from people? Giving ‘em twenty dollars for their shit? Like you’re one to judge.”

A little cash? She’d skimmed enough to buy a nice used car, and I’d been too trusting to even realize it until the numbers hadn’t added up in a big way.

She slowed near the guitars at the front of the store and malicious glee lit her eyes.

She wouldn’t.

Oh, but she did.

Bree grabbed a guitar and swung it toward the rack as the chimes above the front door jangled. Wood crashed against wood, and two female screeches erupted.

Shit … if she injured a customer…

I charged Bree and ripped the guitar from her hands before she could swing again. A swirl of red hair caught my attention as the other woman dodged out of the strike zone.

Bree struggled against my hold, and I wondered if I was going to end up with a face full of the acrylic claws tearing at my arms. “Let go of me, you asshole!”

“Whoa, boss. Getting the door for ya.” Mathieu bolted across the shop and yanked the door open again. I hustled Bree out and set her free on the sidewalk.

She spun to face Mathieu and me. “You’re gonna regret this,” she hissed. “I swear, you will.”

A soft laugh came from the open door. “From what I’ve seen, I highly doubt it.”

Bree opened her mouth to spew something else, but I shut her down. “Get gone. I don’t ever wanna see you near my shop again.”

Bree’s flinty eyes narrowed as she shouldered her purse. “Fuck you, Lord. You think you’re better than me? Not a chance. You’re just thievin’ street scum. Fuck you.”

“And now she’s getting repetitious,” the husky female voice commented from behind me.

Lip curling in disgust, Bree turned and marched toward the corner, never looking back.

“Her exit could totally use some work, but all-in-all, that was one hell of a welcome.”

I turned to survey the woman standing in the doorway of Chains. Even without a photographic memory, I didn’t think I’d ever forget this particular pose: one arm braced on the doorframe and the other propped on her hip, a green dress hugging curves that had my entire body sitting up and taking notice. Matched with her long, curling red hair, she was a goddamn knockout. What the hell is she doing here?

“You lost, sweet thing?”

She stepped onto the sidewalk and tore the HELP WANTED sign off the bottom corner of the front window. Holding it between two fingers, she smiled. “Nope. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. I’m your newest employee.”

Blog Tour & Review: The Gilded Cage by Lauren Smith

The Gilded Cage
by Lauren Smith
Series: Surrender, #2
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: June 9, 2015

Passion that takes no prisoners, and love that tests the limits of ecstasy . . .

Fenn Lockwood comes alive in the shadows. Though he might have physically survived the kidnapping that stole his childhood, the trauma and pain he lived through have marked him forever. Now the only place where Fenn can be himself is within the walls of his private BDSM world—a place of erotic obsession, where desire isn’t just captured . . . it’s bound.

Hayden Thorne knows that behind Fenn’s hardened exterior is a man worth fighting for. Yet to save him from the past that still haunts him, Hayden will have to abandon every inhibition she’s ever had and venture into Fenn’s intoxicatingly sensual world. Each tantalizing second she spends in Fenn’s searing embrace is more delicious than the last and soon Hayden begins to think that she may never want to leave such torturous bliss . . .

Not too much relationship drama; dominant, delicious sex; suspenseful kidnapper/killer on the loose; & a hot as fuck cowboy turned heir to a fortune. YUP, I was so in.

Fenn has finally been found…in more ways than one. He’s been living in Colorado as Fenn Smith and except for random flashbacks that he has been writing off as his crazy imagination, he has zero clue that he’s anything other than an orphaned child and adopted rancher. He’s found a family with Jim and Callie and despite their financial difficulties, he’s a happy man.

When Hayden sprints across the bullpen in a tight little red dress, Fenn’s interests suddenly take a different direction. Even when she reveals the truth to him – that he’s the heir to a fortune, has a twin brother, and the life he currently knows is not totally his own – he wants to take her, spank her and make her his.

The connection between Hayden and Fenn is clearly immediate and oh so hot. The dirty talking foreplay leads to some lightly dominant sex that had me craving more. Hayden is a submissive at the Gilded Cuff, the sex club back home, but she’s never been able to find a Dominant because she sort of mouths off a lot. Honey, they call that topping from the bottom. Anyway, she’s never been with someone who she felt comfortable releasing all control to – until Fenn. His words calm her, his arms comfort her, and his dick quickly claims her.

There’s lots of danger – since a kidnapper/killer is running around – and a few attempts on everyone’s lives. If you don’t want a lot of relationship angst and prefer to hate on the killer running loose who deserves it, then pick this up now. Overall, it’s a great suspenseful romance that I definitely enjoyed. 4 stars.

[I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review]

“Please Fenn, we really need to talk. Can I come inside for a minute?” She took a step forward. Coda whined softly from between his legs. Her blue eyes were bright and pale as glaciers. She looked oddly more…wolflike, with dark-tipped ears and a thick mane of fur around her neck rather than the trim ruff of a husky. Her nose was entirely white and the white patch spread up to frame her eyes in a heart shape. She was a beautiful creature.

A very sexy smile curved his lips. “Sure, come on in, honey,”

“Uh, thanks.” The way he said honey this time felt much more like a warning.

Fenn stepped back and allowed her to climb into the trailer. The husky backed up, too, still peering around her master’s knees, ears back, but no longer growling. Hayden let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. It was clear the dog no longer thought she was a threat.

Hayden loved animals, but her parents had never allowed her to have a pet. They ruined nice houses, at least according to her mother. Therefore she’d never spent much time around dogs, especially none like Coda, who looked like a wolf…one that could eat her.

“You want something to drink?” Fenn asked as he closed the door behind her.

A stack of empty bottles littered the tiny counter next to the sink.

“No thanks. I think you’ve had enough for the both of us,” she muttered.

“Probably true.” He sighed and lifted his jeans on the left side to show a tightly bandaged ankle. “Hurts real bad,” he explained with a curt nod at the beers and the half-full bottle of whisky.

“So…what can I do for you, Miss Red Dress?” He leered openly at her, but she caught the faintest playful hint of teasing in his gaze.

“Hayden. Please, call me Hayden.” She tried to move past him, but the cramped confines of the trailer wouldn’t allow her to pass without fully grinding her body against his. As she did so, she had to tilt her head back. He was the same height as his twin, six-foot-three, easy.

“Hayden,” he murmured, one of his hands coming to rest on her hip. His large palm squeezed lightly as she wriggled, fighting off the invasive touch. She was a little ticklish. When he touched her there, she flinched as a bolt of arousal shot from the tips of her breasts down to between her thighs.

The swift movement of her hips brought a sudden change in him. His eyes darkened and his lips parted as he drew in a deep breath, his grip tightening. Fenn pressed his body to hers, pinning her against the fridge behind her.

Trapped. She was trapped and it was the most erotic thing she’d ever experienced. Nothing at the Gilded Cuff had ever made her feel like this…flushed and all too aware of herself and his close proximity. Instinctively she tried to dart around him and escape. But there was nowhere to go.

“Where are you going? I thought that’s what you wanted. A buckle bunny looking for a good hard fu—”

Crack! She slapped him hard across his face before she could think twice, and his head whipped sideways. He didn’t move away, he only turned his face back to hers. There was a handprint-shaped mark on his cheek. He reached up and touched the spot, the intensity of his stare burning through her.

Wow. She was so not the violent type when she was angry, but to insinuate that she…oh yeah, slapping him was the appropriate reaction. She may go to a BDSM club frequently, she may do a few scenes with doms, but she rarely went all the way with those men. She didn’t just sleep around like that. When she went to bed with a man, she wanted a deeper connection. For him to call her a…what was it? Buckle bunny? Red tinged her vision as she seriously considered slapping him again.

“So that’s how you want to play?” His lips firmed into a hard line.

As he spoke, he reached up and collared her throat—not squeezing it, but the possessive hold was fully dominant. Little flutters of excitement stirred in the pit of her belly and a shiver rippled through her. Arousal pulsed to life between her thighs at the gentle domination. She tried to retreat, but couldn’t. He must have sensed her need to resist because he leaned over her, reminding her just how much taller he was. Her whole body flashed with heat and arousal at his silent show of power. It was impossible not to imagine him in full control of her: the way he might pin her down on the bed, his muscled arms twining with hers as he held her captive beneath him. Restrained for his pleasure, and hers. He was a natural dominant. It was obvious in every sweeping gaze, the flex of his muscles, the way he looked at her as if he could not only read her mind, but glimpse her soul. Another thing he and his twin apparently had in common. Dominant, alpha male instincts. She was a submissive but she’d not yet found a dominant who could top her and make her truly want to submit. The way Fenn stared at her, like he was furious and yet aroused, and the gentle grip on her throat? What if he unleashed all of that control on her? It was enough to make her light-headed.

Review: Hell or High Water by Julie Ann Walker

Author: Julie Ann Walker

Book: Hell or High Water (Deep Six #1)

tl;dr recommendation:  a great romantic suspense that will thrill until you’re drowning in pleasure

Book Summary:

Six men. One sunken Spanish galleon. Millions in gold and silver coins lying on the ocean floor. And a past that refuses to let the guys of Deep Six Salvage forget the Navy SEAL motto: the only easy day was yesterday…

There’s more than one kind of treasure…

The nation’s security has always been CIA agent Olivia Mortier’s top priority. But a mission-gone-wrong has begun to make her wonder if there’s more to life than risking hers.

And more than one secret at the bottom of the sea…

Only two things could make Leo Anderson abandon his hunt for the legendary lost ship, La Santa Christina, and return to the world of weapons and warfare he swore to leave behind: a capsule of enriched uranium, lost on the ocean floor, and a plea for assistance from the one woman he can’t seem to forget…

Longer Review:

**3.75 stars**

Those hot former SEALs know exactly how to make a girl wet. Leo’s skills at holding his breath only rival his adept hands…and mouth….mmmmm….

A high paced, dangerous mission constantly interrupts Leo and Olivia as they keep trying to fall in love. It also gets in the way of their attempts to fuck. Poor people…so sexual frustrated, but Christ, it’s hot. Leo & Olivia have a history…that ended after their mission eighteen months ago. A mission during which Leo lost one of his men, which resulted in a choice to retire from the Navy.

Leo’s plan now is to start a salvage company with his team – who also are all now civilians. He wants to search for the missing treasure that went down with the vessel carrying it back in the 1600s. A little dreaming never hurt anyone, right? But he’s convinced he can find it…with the help of his team. But then Olivia happens. She crashes back into his life and presents him with the opportunity for one last mission – a mission that will help finance his salvage company.

There are a ton (and I mean A FUCKING LOT) of colloquialisms, puns, and phrases in this book. Some of them hit, and some of them really missed. Like, the Bambi reference I could have done without. But there were others that were pretty funny and I was amused. I can totally see how that would grate on someone’s nerves, but after awhile I learned to expect it.

The switching POVs weren’t as jarring as I initially thought when I first started – you get more than just Olivia or Leo’s perspective for this one, and I came to enjoy it. It was done well and once I knew that I was going to be inside more than one person’s head, I was totally fine.

NOW BACK TO THE STORY. I was seriously itching for Leo & Olivia to get.it.on. Like, ASAP. But there was a substantial amount of cliterferance in the form of drama. Btw, that is an utterly fantastic word that I want to use daily. Thanks, Julie. The suspense is really high, the dangerous hits just keep coming, and the love between Olivia and Leo grows. The ending was extremely satisfying and gave me exactly what I wanted. Overall, a great romantic suspense that will thrill until you’re drowning in pleasure.

Review Tour: Surrender by Karyn Lawrence

Author: Karyn Lawrence

Book: Surrender (The Command #1)

tl;dr recommendation: This book has plot for days and characters with secrets and passion you fall in love with. 4.5 stars!

Book Summary:

The most dangerous thing on Captain Olivia Wallace’s plane is her Italian employer’s new bodyguard. Nathan is just like all the other predators in the deep brush of South Africa: he’s powerfully intense, strikingly gorgeous, and completely lethal.

But Nathan isn’t who he pretends to be and she’s drawn to the decent man she sees inside, the one he claims doesn’t exist. Even as he risks everything he has to save her.

His actions put them on a collision-course with uncontrolled passion, but also dangerous violence, and its impact threatens to destroy so much more than just their lives.

Longer Review:

Holy hotness, people. This romantic suspense story will hold you captive. Oliva is one bad-ass chick who I would love to have on my side. She’s not exactly sure what to do with the attractive and intense new bodyguard/translator, Nathan, who her bosses have added to her flight list. Olivia’s a personal pilot to some unsavory characters. She’s not interested in their illegal activities, she’s interested in the legal money she is making in her position.

But she can’t fight her attraction to Nathan – even though she doesn’t do relationships. She has, pun intended, too much baggage. And, well, he’s shit at fighting it, too. Nathan’s a CIA operative, working undercover to attempt to dismantle a terrorist group. Olivia is a distraction – an incredibly beautiful, enticing distraction. One that he’s never had before in any other mission.

When they give in to their desires, it’s clear that they’re going to want so much more. I was loving their relationship. It’s not based on a lot of internal drama between them – which is great, because there’s a shit ton of drama that’s surrounding them. Olivia is so very stubborn, but Nathan can see below her mask and he’s determined to find a way to lift it completely.

I loved this story line & the characters. The sex is also fantastic. They were meant to fit together in every.single.way. There are a lot of sweet and romantic moments that made me giddy and smile. These characters are great together.

Danger, suspense, a CIA operation complicated by a an attraction so intense your skin will burn. This book has plot for days and characters with secrets and passion you fall in love with. 4.5 stars!
